UN Security Council Finds Iran Is Violating The Nuclear Weapons Program Ban

Tyler Durden's picture

The good old Iraq playbook is being played to the dot, just less than a decade later, and now with Iraq neighbor off by just one letter: Iran. According to Haaretz, the UN Security council "denounced Iran's failure to abide by United Nations resolutions demanding an end to the possible weaponization of its nuclear program. The Denouncement comes after International Atomic Energy Agency submits a report claiming Iran continues to make advances in uranium enrichment beyond its needs for medical applications. The United States, Germany, France and Britain joined forces in exposing Tehran's advanced 20-per-cent uranium enrichment, which is considered military weapons grade. Tehran said its enrichment program was needed for medical and civilian uses. But the UN said Tehran has not been transparent and failed to cooperate with the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which recently submitted a report that Iran continued to make advances in uranium enrichment beyond its needs for medical applications." Whether the US, pardon the UN, will follow up with ever escalating following directives that ultimately lead to nothing short of a land invasion is unknown for now, but if history tis any precedent, the answer is a resounding yes. Furthermore, today's decision should be taken in context with the major article in the WSJ "US Eyes Covert Plan to Counter Iran in Iraq" which does nothing but set the scene for what will inevitably follow in a few weeks or months. Expect a flare up in anti-Iran rhetoric in the next few days.

From the WSJ:

Military commanders and intelligence officers are pushing for greater authority to conduct covert operations to thwart Iranian influence in neighboring Iraq, according to U.S. officials.

The move comes amid growing concern in the Obama administration about Iran's attempts in recent months to expand its influence in Iraq and the broader Middle East and what it says is Tehran's increased arms smuggling to its allies.

Compounding the urgency is the planned reduction in the U.S. military presence in Iraq by the end of the year, a development that many fear will open up the country to more influence from Iran, which also has a majority Shiite population.

If the request is approved by the White House, the authorization for the covert activity in Iraq likely would take the form of a classified presidential "finding." But unlike the secret order that authorized the Central Intelligence Agency's campaign against al Qaeda in 2001, the current proposal is limited in scope, officials said.

Officials declined to provide details about the kinds of covert operations under consideration, but said they could include more aggressive interdiction efforts at the Iraq-Iran border and stepped-up measures to stop Iranian arms smuggling after the American drawdown.

The United Nations has prohibited Iran from exporting arms. However, defense officials say, Tehran continues to supply weapons parts to Shiite militias in Iraq.

Right, and when it comes to "defense officials", we should always take their word, whether it is for secret knowledge of weapons of mass destruction, Iraq's massive nuclear armament, or any other watercooler soundbite that Joe Sixpack is delighted to regurgitate the next day to his minimally paid coworkers.

Iranian officials have repeatedly denied that they have played any role in arming militants in Iraq or worked to destabilize other Arab nations. Tehran has claimed the U.S. has leveled charges of arms smuggling to justify a continued American military presence.

As the NYT noted before contrary to Israel demand for an immediate invasion discussed previously, the US military still understands that yet another US-sponsored land invasion in the Middle East may prove complicated to be spun as a humanitarian intervention to even the greater American unwashed.

Both military and senior Obama administration officials believe they must proceed cautiously to ensure that any expansion in covert action doesn't prompt Tehran to retaliate and inadvertently trigger a wider conflict.

Yet behind all the media spin rhetoric, the stage is now set:

Special operations forces would have the ability to carry out risky capture-or-kill missions that the CIA may not be able to conduct on its own.

A new finding also would ensure that the CIA and military special-operations forces working for the agency have the legal ability under U.S. law to shut down the flow of arms from Iran to allied militia groups.

Other officials, including some in Congress, favor a broader secret campaign against Iran to block its support to Syria or to other militant groups elsewhere in the Middle East.

In retrospect, the only thing oil needs in addition to QE3 being launched in 2 weeks is a major military campaign against one of the biggest petroleum countries in the world. It does however, explain why WTI is now inching into $90s territory, and why Brent will soon take out its all time highs.

In Israel, mainstream media are being accused of burying their heads in the sand over coverage of the biggest anti-government protests the country has seen in decades. Tens of thousands of people, fed up with deteriorating living standards, are staging demonstrations calling for Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stand down. But as Paula Slier reports from Tel Aviv, protesters' voices are simply going unheard by the rest of the world.

Israel's "March of the Million" brought out more people than any other protest in Israel's history. Meanwhile the government has decided to keep quiet, only appointing Professor Manuel Trachtenberg to head a committee to look into the demands of the J14 movement. Started on July 14, this march was the sixth in a row, and while many on the street have different ideas about how to move ahead, most have little faith in the Trachtenberg committee. The Real News' Lia Tarachansky reports from Tel Aviv and talks to protesters about how to move forward.

where can i send some lit from J Steet, brlawyer.

imagine, for a moment (and it's my dream, too) that neither iran nor israel were theocracies....imagine, for a moment, that you hadn't any 'emotional' tie to the region.

now, step back, and take a look the geopolitics involved.

still think this is all about anti-semitism?  it ain't.

i'll certainly concede that there's a healthy measure of it floatin around, and seein how world events are takin shape, it's going to get much, much worse for the world's innocent jews (the salt-of-the-earths, like you, brlawyer...who are just supporting a family (or whatever) and going about your lives).  but when the world sees what it inerprets as bigotry from a certain people, and then they see financial crimes tethered to similar sounding names....you know how this all ends.  this is not some tacit threat; i'm just as terrified as you (believe it or not, i have a few very dear jewish friends).  now, i'm one of those who knows how the game is played (goldman is trying to learn our tricks -- see how they put goyim names out front, and hide the others behind walls of owneship?)...i know who's really guilty...and it ain't the jewish people, it's my people.

anyway, the reflexive 'it's always the jews' is just as counterproductive as the protocols of the learned elders of zion -- they spring from a similar place deep in the super-ego.

i will refer you to one of my heros, sigmund freud (he had one of dem names, too!)

now, brlawyer, i ain't yer enemy -- but don't trust me.  put that analytical training you spent six figures on to good use.

in fact, janus seein world events movin the way they are, if i were a jew, the LAST place i'd be livin is israel (see, i'm tryin to be nice, didn't even call it palastine) or new york.

tell me, is it not strange that the diaspora is concentrating itself in small areas.  go ahead, my jewish friends, trust your 'leaders' like bibi and sheldon adelson; yeah, leave your shops and stores all across fly-over country.  move to the big cities or go 'reclaim' the "promised land".  whatever.  just don't say you weren't warned.

spread out, my hebrew friends.  small towns have always been your best friend.  it's harder to round you up that way.  i know this sounds awful -- but the Truth of it is mighty hard to escape (and it's really hard when you've allowed yourselves to be re-ghettoized...but the livin conditions are swank, janus!  well, fer now they are.  let's see you make that desert bloom without petros and their blood-drenched dollahs!)

again, don't take janus's word for it.

Although it is not all Obama's fault as the latest puppet, he, and Hillary, certainly are ceding our sovereignty even more to the UN.  But the game plan of destabilizing MENA for the purposes of the further rape and pillage of resources has been planned by the CIA and pentagon since the early 1990s.  The timetable has been moved forward because the pending global economic implosion may severely limit the ability of the elites to impose the end game of corporate world order; a totalitarian wet dream that will be based on the old feudal system.

Egypt, Lybia, Niger, Yemen, Somalia, Tunusia, Syria and then Iran, and then finally, Saudi Arabia.

Weapons-grade uranium

U-235 is made weapons-grade through isotopic enrichment. It only makes up 0.7% of natural uranium, with the rest being almost entirely uranium-238 (U-238). They are separated by their differing masses. Highly enriched uranium is considered weapons-grade when it has been enriched to about 90% U-235.

Since when is 20% enrichment "weapons grade?"  20% enrichment is the threshold between what is defined as "low enriched uranium" and "highly enriched uranium."  20% isn't weapons grade.  90% is the general cutoff, though that can vary depending on the system a bit.

I totally believe Iran is not living up to the spirit and possibly the letter of the law of the non-proliferation treaty, but 20% enriched material won't get you a bomb.  Sounds like part of a psy-op campaign.

Well if ever there was a time to speed up the enrichment process, it is now.  Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Iran is damned if they do, damned if they don't.  I wish the US would pick on someone who can actually fight back - these bullying techniques will be quite embarrassing when the oppressed decide to push back with more force than they currently deploy (hey!  another self-fulfilling prophecy!)

I agree with Rothbard when it comes to war: the US should just invade every country on earth and get it over with.

You don't speed up the enrichment process. If the neutrons hit the U235 too fast and hot they won't "stick" and enrich it to plutonium 239. They'll fission. Enrichment isn't about speeding things up. it's quite literally about slowing things down and it's slowed down with just the right amount of water to pass through in the cooling chamber.

"Persian vs Arab"

It's not Persian vs. Arab ... it's Christian [+ silent Sunni Muslim support] vs. Shi'ite Muslim. This is why all the Shi'ite countries are on the attack/eliminate calendar: Yemen, Bahrain, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan.

It's a religious thing (can you believe that this BS is still going on in the 21st Century!?!) ... the Shi'ites have the temerity to believe that their Imam is a direct descendant of Muhammad, and therefore an "infallible" messenger of Dog. (The Sunni Imam is not a descendant of Muhammad and all the Sunni rulers are puppets of the NWO). This doesn't sit well with the Pope (and his 2 billion followers), who claims he is the only "infallible" messenger of Dog. So, one of them has to go!

Of course, after that little internecine struggle has been sorted, the Luciferians will use their control over the Pope (which has waxed and waned over the centuries, but is currently at a high point with Benedict XVI Ratzinger) and Washington DC to impose their NWO over an exhausted and impoverished globe. (Well ... that's the plan, anyway).

The gnat, in this case, being Iran's nook-u-lar (thank you George) weapons capability, with the camel, of course,  being the nook-u-lar (thanks again George - that'll be all for today, now run along...) weapons capability of APBNC (a particularly belligerent neighbouring country).

So, where do these countries and the US get off exposing Iran's junk?  WTF. If someome blew the hell out of us, and our allies, we would, hopefully, fight back, using any methods we could.  I think Ron Paul said that "we went there first."  I would defend America to the hilt if attacked; at the same time, anyother country (s) have the same right.  I am tired of bully America devising slick little reasons to invade Iraq, Afganistan, Lybia, Yemen, etc., to get oil and set up Central banking systems.

I am tired of declaring war on countries illegally and hiring poor American boys as mercenaries to go fight, thinking they are fighting for "liberty and freedom."  What Shit.  You know, these are dumb kids, low class working boys.  The middle class and rich kids are all working on Wall Street.

I am also tired of being treated like a circus dupe, not knowing yesterday from today regarding economics, monetary policy and the illegal crap that is going on.  The American public is being shit on big time, and even to this day it does not realize it.  Semper Fi.

And, finally, I am tired of these mindless pundits blaming all our woes on medicare and social security WHEN  they don't even know or understand them and the procedures.  Putting the blame for Americas contrived problems on the backs of the old, sick and downtrodden is the most cowardly, phoney and unctuous (sp?) crap that I have ever seen: bring on the wars, bring on the Wall Street scaming, the Bank graft, and the huge bonuses.  Fuck grandma, fuck grandpa, and revel in the knowledge that America has leveled itself to 0; pretty soon, by percentages and history, the upper 5% will find itself drownding in its own blood.

I agree that it's a given that the Iranian issue will be used politically to distract from the continued collapse of the entitlement state. *However* I think it is also obvious (and has been for years) that Iran is working to create nuclear weapons. Where does America get this moral superiority to develop nuclear weapons and ascribe them  them to other countries--or deny them?  From "God?"  What is this?  The 1600s?  Who the hell do we think we are?  China and many countries of the world were here centuries before we were, with cultures that even today exceed ours.

As a country to deign yourself as superior and all-knowning is great in the short-term, but Alexander and Hitler learned that arrogance and power were very tenuous and short-lived. My hope is that Obama finds himself in a Berlin style bunker in the short term and Americans find themselves under the control of someone far more benevolent and understanding and, yes, decent, than what has evolved in my lifetime.

1. War with Iran = continuation of waste and corruption at the Pentagon … $ 2 Trillion and counting...

2. Land attack on Iran = expansion into Pakistan and that inevitably leads to real military conflict with China. If that happens, be sure “nuclear” option in FX and bond market is on the table.

3. Before all the action, war needs to be sold to the public. Colin Powell with the vial of anthrax will not work this time around, rather false flag operation like Golf of Tonkin or USS Liberty. Bibi has a lot of problems with protesters (economy)  recently, so he has multiple reasons to start new war as a distraction from ongoing domestic situation and Palestinian Statehood recognition by UN is on the way.

4. In such a case, CL goes above $150 p/brl, GC $2.5K p/oz

5. If all of above happens, we are totally toasted!

Agree here too. There is not much that the US or others can do given Iran's standing army.

I also can't blame Iran for pursuing nukes either. Bush Jr. rebuffed the moderates who wanted to normalize relations with the west and offered to help us with tracking down Bin Laden (the offer was made through the Swiss, check your history naysayers before jumping on me here).

So once they were lumped in as part of the axis of evil and we invaded Iraq, things changed quickly and the conservative clowns took over Iran. The North Korea experience shows that no one f*&ks with you if you've got nukes.

I've been wondering for a while if the US would finally dispense with the sanctimonious veneer of 'just war'? With the economic state of afairs tightly spiralling down the toilet on the way to the sewer, will Americans finally admit that they need these wars to prop up a dying way of life. America's just war policies are about as meaningful as a "No Blood For Oil" bumper sticker on the back of a Hummer. Is the average soccer-mom willing to give up her 3200 sq. ft. home and Suburban so that wars for oil and scarce resources are no longer necessary? Doubt it. She'll slap a magnetic yellow ribbon on the back of her car, and keep gobbling up the lies while making her kids into thoughtless, albiet patriotic consumers on her husband's middle-management dime. Who gives a damn about the structural evils of our own society, bought in blood? She's got a dinner party with the girls planned where they can get together and watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

If our government did dispense with the lies and came clean with the public, letting them know that these wars will persist to preserve our way of life, there would be no fuss from a great majority of the public. Even if they knew, they wouldn't care. The fact of the matter is we have been a land-grabbing, resource hoarding nation for the sum of our entire existence in one way or another, it's in our DNA. I don't see Vietnam-type protests gripping the nation, not enough people really care. Those who do will simply be marginalized or worse. But until this whole game collapses into economic and political anarchy, and people are having to make choices that will ensure their abilities to eat and simply survive, I don't see anything changing anytime soon.

You almost started a riff there (Ghostbusters: "Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!") which would have been a hit, given 'cats and dogs, living together' was an inspired choice by Tyler not so long ago.

But overly vague 80's film reference & gold bugs was too weak to really hold - fiat crash porn too obvious - zombie apocalypse mixed with popular music (TI / Enimem, "No mercy", right?) missed the period / temporal height of the two genres (to gel, you must share meta-reference - temporal are common or thematic) - paranoid cold war couch warrior (scatological language too polite) mixed with oil politics doesn't slide either.

None of it feels organic to me, it feels like pastiche. Sadly, that isn't a compliment.

Delueze is all about organic rhizomatic attack; plastic isn't plastique... If you're going to use the technique, here's a free tip: rhyming couplets are the lowest form of poetry, unless you're subverting the form. Merely adding !!111!!!1 isn't enough to bind the form or subvert it. Less shotgun, more sniper rifle please.

The only nation ever to use nuclear weapons, and those against civilian populations, is fulminating about a nation which is no objective threat to any one? Christ, if I were Persia, I would make damn sure I had nukes - at least 300 - if only to counter my mad-dog neighbours and their enabler, Uncle Scam. But this WMD, Part Deux absurdity is a fatuous distraction. The real possibility of real nuclear war is centered on the Line of Control between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, where Uncle Scam is - of course - up to his bankrupt nuts in intrigue. The US government has become the worst terrorist the world has ever known. How much longer must we endure this fascist force for evil? It is high time men of peace pulled the plug on London's hammer. Iraq only 31 million. It's going to be a lot tougher. But with Peak Oil sapping our energy, as some of us believe, this is the dread end game none of us want to watch.

Why are we in Afghanistan if not to set up the bases for our victorious pincer movement. This time around we will have more allies with boots on the ground.
