US Citizens Dump Stocks And Precious Metals To Afford Obamacare

Tyler Durden's picture

After some initial confusion in stocks (though Precious Metals and Treasuries were convinced) equities are now down markedly (with Hospitals holding up while Managed Care is down) but it seems that US citizen/investors are selling down their gold, silver, and stocks to 'save up' for the new Obamacare tax...

Gold and Silver plunge...

and now stocks too...

and it seems they are selling their cars too (and deciding to cut back on heating perhaps) as WTI is crashing too...

Behind the ranting of hyperventilating doomer libertarians, many people are sitting quietly behind their screens with a wry grin on their faces (myself included). Libertarians can cry all they want, but today is a victory for intellectuals and visionary social scholars. Soon, criticizing the healthcare bill will be invoke the same reaction by average Americans that criticizing social security or the minimum wage invoke today. This law is here to stay, and whiny libertarians better get used to it.

MDB is always trolling - he always be trolling!

What is funny is fixing healthcare was really simple - allow individuals to buy in groups. The individual gets killed because they are out there alone without a group to bargain. I joined a group of small business owners and we get a cheaper negotiated rate on whatever plan we choose. It would have taken about 10 pages for congress to authorize that - but the insurance co's, big pharma hated it, plus unions wouldn't get their 'cut' of the graft.

What we got instead were big unions and big pharma colluding with statists politicians and, well, we got this ridiculous, unworkable, healthcare disaster.

And just in time! As we (as a nation) go into debt destruction overdrive!

Enjoy the momentum (off the cliff).

OHIP

I walk in with my OHIP card to any medical facility in Canada and get whatever medical services I need (minus perscriptions, dental, eye and foot) and it costs me peanuts in yearly taxes. It's not the fastest in the world, its not the best in the world but you can be damn sure that if I am sick or in need of medical attention it gets taken care and there is no $20,000 bill once I am released. EVERYONE is covered.

But Canadian employment suffers by not having an army of insurance paper pushers not to mention executive bonuses that trickle down creating additional jobs. /sarc

My 1 month old daughter got RSV. A week in the hospital with time in the ICU cost over $50,000!!! This on top of bills for the birth which being a pretty standard affair only cost about $10,000. Insurance should have topped out at $4,000 out of pocket max BUT, and this is the funny part I'm sure you'll laugh, OUT OF POCKET doesn't mean what you think it means. For example, you have to cover your deductible and your copays and oh drugs don't count against any of these expenses. The birth was charged to the mother so those expenses don't go towards the out of pocket max for the baby. After all is said and done, and she's not even 4 months yet, so you can be sure not all is said and done when insurance is concerned, this was several thousand dollars OVER the stated out of pocket maximum.

When my wife and I had our first baby, our daughter is 3 years old now, because my wife was covered by her employer and I put her on my policy as well, it took almost a A YEAR to resolve all expenses for the birth because BOTH insurance companies pointed fingers at each other when it came time to pay. No kidding. When you have LESS coverage, it is actually easier to resolve claims. Nobody had a problem resolving who the primary insurance was BEFORE the birth but suddenly the primary insurance acted like they were secondary when it came time to pay and in the meantime hospitals and doctors are sending collectors after YOU because while I have TWO insurance policies, neither will pay out. Trust me, had I paid those bills, it would have been the end of that and I never would have seen my money again.

I'm anti-statist but pro-universal healthcare; the portion of my taxes (back when I still paid some) that went to socialized healthcare did not cause me any concern. This is about everybody's quality of life, not little pieces of paper and virtual numbers. A humane universal healthcare system, even if it is slightly less efficient on a case-by-case basis, is leagues beyond an individualized private system in terms of benefit to society, which comes straight back to every individual within it - after all it's the environment we're immersed in for every moment of our life.

It's alright to be anti-statist, but for the right reasons. Yours lack foresight and systemic thinking, while being egoistical and conceited. That is being part of the problem, not of the solution.

Think for yourself's picture

This is a very clearly defined black and white picture you've got there. Does it come in paint-by-numbers?

What I'm saying is that I would have the common human decency to opt-in into taxes that would go into a universal healthcare program to help you if you had a genuine need for it - even if you weren't able or willing to contribute to it. You could keep being a douche and I would still do so as long as it did not radically affect my lifestyle (for instance, I would be perfectly comfortable with something on the order 10% of my salary, 30%, not so much).

I, for one, understand enough about the situation that I would actually hold out a hand for you when life - or the system - tries to smash your face in.

Thu, 06/28/2012 - 12:05 | 2569309 Think for yourself
Think for yourself's picture

There you go. At least now we speak the same language. I understand your point. But while it exists - and especially as long as its power is properly circumscribed - government would be as good as any other well-overseen non-profit to coordinate such a kind of universal healthcare program.

This is not a black-and-white world we live in. Evil is rampant, corrupting the institutions of society. Yet well-meaning people also get in, and try to divert the flow of energy into more productive ends. Better spend the taxes - whether they're ill-gotten or not - on universal healthcare than on war and destruction.

By the way, I'm not saying this is what Obama-care is. It's a fascist measure for forcing the government and the people into consuming services from the privatized, for profit system. I was not praising it but rather talking about a true universal system like many countries in the world currently manage, in varying degrees of success, most of them quite satisfying.

Universal healthcare is not a charity it is a right to life and promotes a productive, happy and healthier society. I have volunteered over 100 hours to my local hospitals ER over the course of 2 years to assist in the quality of care of Ontario hospitals. Cleaning shit and puked stained beds, re-stocking bandages and cast carts, helping family members find their loved ones all without a thought of a reward or recognition. Yep - that's why so many people come to the USA for operations and other health issues.  We have the best health care system in the world.

We don't have to wait 6 months for tests and some procedures.

We can find primary care doctors in days - probably not for much longer now with the Obama Tax - other countries takes months.

And it is not cheap!!!!!

Never mind that the healthcare system is already socialized....jsut in the most outlandish and expensive way possible.  Don't think so?  Just go to the emergency room of any hospital and watch all the free services being provided....the most expesnive service in the world, in an emergency room near you.

You are exactly correct.  This bill will not change the nature of American medicine; it will simply transform the entire system into something resembling the Medicare HMO system, and will be a massive windfall for insurance companies at the expense of every citizen.  What it will also do is ensure that most major medical decisions will be made by RN case managers who have never seen the patient or any patient for that matter.

Of course, there had always been universal healthcare in the United States; since 1964 the program is called Medicaid, and is administered by each state according to federal guidelines. This just goes to show how uninformed most Americans are.  All I have heard from those who support this nonsense legislation is how poor people have no access to healthcare in the United States.  This is ridiculous.  Poor people have exactly the same access to healthcare as anyone- the Department of Health and the Department of Public Welfare have many jackboots who patrol the system to ensure that this is so.  I have never seen an Emergency room throw someone out onto the street because they were poor.  Ridiculous that people believe this stuff.

Huih? Of course it is a political issue. the right wing scream for private care, the left for single payer. The US pays duble what the rest of the world pays for worse results. Of course Romney/Obama care is horrible because it just feeds more money to the Sickness Complex. Go single payer and see real savings ... and better results ... and a more efficient economy.

Yes, it is a political issue. But you infer in your comment that the health care situation in the USA would somehow be better if the Left gets it's way. How absurd. Both parties are bought and paid for by Corporate America. The cost of healthcare will continue to increase rapidly under the control of either party. It is what their masters demand -  MORE! MORE! MORE! of YOUR money! The Left and Right have become the same thing - control mechanisms for the elite. You yourself have validated this theory by referring to it as Romney/Obama care. Continuing to muddy the waters of the debate with your patisan sniping only plays into the hands of the evil geniuses that are controlling our daily lives. With the grip the healthcare industry already has established on us, I can assure you that the single payer system will not happen in the USA short of violent revolution. Want proof? Do a little research on the current governor of FLorida. He should be in prison, yet he is in a public office (which he purchased with his ill gotten gains) with great power and influence over legislation. What else is there to say?

Yep. It's a bit sad to see that people hanging out on ZH, who have such a good understanding about how the system does its best divide and conquer, pitting the full might of its treacherous ways against every single individual, will still act according to their conditioning and think of healthcare in such individualistic terms. There is no systemic thinking here, no humaneness.

To the grandparent of this post: please tell me if I understood you correctly:
So you get corzined or MF Global'd (no, no, can't happen to you, you know better than that, right? what if it happened to your brother, sister, cousin, parents, kids, good drinking buddies?), layed off and robosigning-foreclosed, all of it traceable back to the machinations of the elite in their insatiable quest for profit and power. You tripped on one of their many well-concealed traps, and you fell down. They're lacing on the boot to bash your face in the pavement. What you're basically saying is that you want all of us to stand by and look despondently - because after all this is what you would do for anyone else. Is that what you're saying?

Fuck, man, what will it take you to learn? Get off your fucking knees and come stand up with the rest of humanity!

Not wanting to be FORCED to help others is not selfish.  Get it through your fucking head.  Perhaps I should walk over to my neighbors house and take his car - if he protested he would be selfish, right?  Same fucking concept.

Charity is there to help people.  Unfortunately statists like you look to the government to take care of you.

Guess i'm not surprised by the decision.  The entire system is currently rigged --- markets, courts, tax codes.   Take a look at the bigger picture.  Notice how the individual herds of sheep are being moved into collective pens.   Can't have individual rights that leads to thinking.  Thinking by the sheep is bad!   Everyone gets the same thing, no decisions to make, no need to think here... free will?  We're giving it away.

Looks like a lot of small businesses are going Galt. I look for unemployment to rise and tax revenue to drop. SCOTUS may have just killed the Obama's chance of re-election by giving him what he wanted.  By calling the payment a tax instead of a fee will raise the question of what is a fair tax.  It looks like there is going to be a lot of sturm and drang in Congress since that is where tax rates are supposed to be decided.

why would you sell PM to raise cash to buy health insurance?   the tax for NOT buying it is only 1% of income , far cheaper than buying insurance.  Save your money and buy coverage when you need it since you can't be denied coverage.  Of course this strategy wouldn't work for an accident or sudden illness but would be effective for most types of health problems.

Save your prescious metals to bribe the doctors and hospital people to move you to the head of the line or as a bribe to get out of the country
