The US Has Finally Done It: Mexican Immigrants Become Emigrants
You know its bad when...the net flow of Mexicans into the US has fallen so much that there is a high probability that it is now in reverse ending around forty years of inward migration. The Pew Hispanic Center notes that the standstill - after more than 12 million current immigrants have entered the US - more than half of whom are illegal - appears to be the result of many factors including a weakened US job and construction market, tougher border enforcement, a rise in deportations, growing dangers associated with border crossing, a long-term decline in Mexico's birth rate, and changing (read perhaps more opportunistic) economic conditions in Mexico (especially if you work at WalMex). This sharp downward trend in net migration has led to the first significant decrease in at least two decades in the number of unauthorized Mexican immigrants living in the U.S. - to 6.1 million in 2011, down from a peak of nearly 7 million in 2007. In the five years from 2005 to 2010, about 1.4m Mexicans immigrated to the US – exactly the same number of Mexican immigrants and their US-born children who quit the US and moved back or were deported to Mexico. By contrast, in the previous five years to 2000 some 3m Mexicans came to the US and fewer than 700,000 left it. It will be interesting to see the spin that the Obama and Romney camps put on this hot-button topic as the 'Dream Act' turns into a nightmare and hardline anti-illegal immigration stances become, well, less relevant as Mexicans become Mexican'ts.
Among the report’s key findings:
- In the five-year period from 2005 to 2010, about 1.4 million Mexicans immigrated to the United States and about 1.4 million Mexican immigrants and their U.S.-born children moved from the United States to Mexico.
- In the five-year period a decade earlier (1995 to 2000), about 3 million Mexicans had immigrated to the U.S. and fewer than 700,000 Mexicans and their U.S. born-children had moved from the U.S. to Mexico.
- This sharp downward trend in net migration has led to the first significant decrease in at least two decades in the number of unauthorized Mexican immigrants living in the U.S.—to 6.1 million in 2011, down from a peak of nearly 7 million in 2007. Over the same period the number of authorized Mexican immigrants rose modestly, from 5.6 million in 2007 to 5.8 million in 2011.
- Mexicans now comprise about 58% of the unauthorized immigrants living in the United States. They also account for 30% of all U.S. immigrants. The next largest country of origin for U.S. immigrants, China, accounts for just 5% of the nation’s stock of nearly 40 million immigrants.
- Apprehensions of Mexicans trying to cross the border illegally have plummeted by more than 70% in recent years, from more than 1 million in 2005 to 286,000 in 2011—a likely indication that fewer unauthorized immigrants are trying to cross. This decline has occurred at a time when funding in the U.S. for border enforcement—including more agents and more fencing—has risen sharply.
- As apprehensions at the border have declined, deportations of unauthorized Mexican immigrants—some of them picked up at work or after being arrested for other criminal violations—have risen to record levels. In 2010, nearly 400,000 unauthorized immigrants—73% of them Mexicans—were deported by U.S. authorities.
- Although most unauthorized Mexican immigrants sent home by U.S. authorities say they plan to try to return, a growing share say they will not try to come back to the U.S. According to a survey by Mexican authorities of repatriated immigrants, 20% of labor migrants in 2010 said they would not return, compared with just 7% in 2005.
- Looking back over the entire span of U.S. history, no country has ever sent as many immigrants to this country as Mexico has in the past four decades. However, when measured not in absolute numbers but as a share of the immigrant population at the time, immigration waves from Germany and Ireland in the late 19th century equaled or exceeded the modern wave from Mexico.

Here is my anecdote which makes me question these numbers: I talked to an illegal immigrant a couple weeks ago. She told me none of her friends want to go back to Mexico because in Mexico they can't get food stamps, WIC, child tax credits, free healthcare. In Mexico they would have to work, and here, according to this woman, her friends are lazy because they don't have to work.
She told me most women, when they get pregnant, come over here because they can immediately start getting WIC (women infant and child, part of SNAP) and food stamps, and when the baby is born, those payments all increase.
One of her friends, who didn't work much but has 2 kids, had just gotten $6000 from her child tax credits this year and bought a car and some rims.
When her friends do work, it's mostly for cash, so they avoid paying taxes. They would get none of these benefits in Mexico.
Again, that is my anecdote.

What most people don't understand, is that if you legally migrate to the US, it requires a US sponsor. Usually a relative that signs and Affidavit of Support, guaranteeing to repay the US govt for any support the migrant receives from the State, for 10 years. Moreover, to legally bring a family member here is a 5 - 10 year process, unless it's a fiancee, spouse, or minor child.
The "legal" immigrant is not inclined to receive transfer payments, because it will hurt his sponsor. The immigrant therefore will not vote for larger govt, and is therefore considered "unfriendly" by govt. And so the process never gets easier, only more and more difficult.
Of course, none of this applies to refugees. And so our govt loves refugees.
I work some with the immigrant community and that is the truth. I am Latino and that is the truth unfortunately for quite a few. Don't believe me? Go sit in a local social services office somewhere and see how many latinos are there. Now you can't tell who is legal and illegal but I know many illegals who came here to have their child born here so they can qualify for all the benefits that come along with it. SNAP WIC Housing, Child Tax Credit. etc etc...

Not seeing it here in FL either. Neighbor works for a large home builder and runs crews of all Mexicans. Meanwhile his other family members can't get work in the trades because they can't live off the 'wages'. Berry picking is in full swing here and the fields are packed with Mexican as are the check cashing places on Friday. I'm told they use fake SS #'s to get paid, when/if the numbers get flagged, they just move to the next job. The employer is paying in their part but the workers never file. The wife and kids collect the bennies and they live much better than what I've seen in Mexico. A multi-national I used to work for opened a plant in Chihuahua but yields were so bad they only made money because wages were so low and they were moving those jobs to Brazil and the Phillipines when I left. Why? Even lower wages and more lax environmental controls along with cheaper bribes...as Carlin described '...we're in a nice downward glide. I call it circling the drain...'.
Well the lazy stay in America and the ones who prefer to have a job and build their lives go back to Mexico that´s that simple. I am European, landed in America in 1999 (by lack of Luck, since I had studied Chinese -- but Europe is even worse than America). After 4 years of training and progressing in my job, I headed to South America where I live and the business opportunities are better.

That's what the attachment to my post was about. Muslims who want to completely change the lifestyle of the west. That is the problem, not the Mexicans. Sure there are some problems when there is too much illegal immigration but nothing like we are going to see from having open borders with muslim countries.
I spoke to a guy from Britain when in Mexico last year and he told me his daughter's school now has a muslim lunch program that the entire school has to eat. They are over running Europe and I think it is already too late there and do not want to see it happen in North America. I have way less of a problem with any other immigrants as at least they make an attempt to fit in.

I've seen this in AZ for the last few years. SB1070 & Sheriff Joe have pretty much killed the Hispanic communities here, and the money that kept those parts of town alive all went South.

Just step three or four states to the east, and one or two north and you can do all those things plus ride your ATV short distances on public roads to get to them. Take your snowmobile to the store in winter - make it a two-stroke and wind it out. Break out that leaf blower at-will.
There's also still plenty of freedom north of MA on the east coast and in many rural, southern and midwest locations. The U.S. is not well-represented by CA, Vegas, D.C., or it's top financial institutions.
