The US Has Finally Done It: Mexican Immigrants Become Emigrants

Tyler Durden's picture

You know its bad when...the net flow of Mexicans into the US has fallen so much that there is a high probability that it is now in reverse ending around forty years of inward migration. The Pew Hispanic Center notes that the standstill - after more than 12 million current immigrants have entered the US - more than half of whom are illegal - appears to be the result of many factors including a weakened US job and construction market, tougher border enforcement, a rise in deportations, growing dangers associated with border crossing, a long-term decline in Mexico's birth rate, and changing (read perhaps more opportunistic) economic conditions in Mexico (especially if you work at WalMex). This sharp downward trend in net migration has led to the first significant decrease in at least two decades in the number of unauthorized Mexican immigrants living in the U.S. - to 6.1 million in 2011, down from a peak of nearly 7 million in 2007. In the five years from 2005 to 2010, about 1.4m Mexicans immigrated to the US – exactly the same number of Mexican immigrants and their US-born children who quit the US and moved back or were deported to Mexico. By contrast, in the previous five years to 2000 some 3m Mexicans came to the US and fewer than 700,000 left it. It will be interesting to see the spin that the Obama and Romney camps put on this hot-button topic as the 'Dream Act' turns into a nightmare and hardline anti-illegal immigration stances become, well, less relevant as Mexicans become Mexican'ts.

Among the report’s key findings:

  • In the five-year period from 2005 to 2010, about 1.4 million Mexicans immigrated to the United States and about 1.4 million Mexican immigrants and their U.S.-born children moved from the United States to Mexico.
  • In the five-year period a decade earlier (1995 to 2000), about 3 million Mexicans had immigrated to the U.S. and fewer than 700,000 Mexicans and their U.S. born-children had moved from the U.S. to Mexico.
  • This sharp downward trend in net migration has led to the first significant decrease in at least two decades in the number of unauthorized Mexican immigrants living in the U.S.—to 6.1 million in 2011, down from a peak of nearly 7 million in 2007. Over the same period the number of authorized Mexican immigrants rose modestly, from 5.6 million in 2007 to 5.8 million in 2011.
  • Mexicans now comprise about 58% of the unauthorized immigrants living in the United States. They also account for 30% of all U.S. immigrants. The next largest country of origin for U.S. immigrants, China, accounts for just 5% of the nation’s stock of nearly 40 million immigrants.
  • Apprehensions of Mexicans trying to cross the border illegally have plummeted by more than 70% in recent years, from more than 1 million in 2005 to 286,000 in 2011—a likely indication that fewer unauthorized immigrants are trying to cross. This decline has occurred at a time when funding in the U.S. for border enforcement—including more agents and more fencing—has risen sharply.
  • As apprehensions at the border have declined, deportations of unauthorized Mexican immigrants—some of them picked up at work or after being arrested for other criminal violations—have risen to record levels. In 2010, nearly 400,000 unauthorized immigrants—73% of them Mexicans—were deported by U.S. authorities.
  • Although most unauthorized Mexican immigrants sent home by U.S. authorities say they plan to try to return, a growing share say they will not try to come back to the U.S. According to a survey by Mexican authorities of repatriated immigrants, 20% of labor migrants in 2010 said they would not return, compared with just 7% in 2005.
  • Looking back over the entire span of U.S. history, no country has ever sent as many immigrants to this country as Mexico has in the past four decades. However, when measured not in absolute numbers but as a share of the immigrant population at the time, immigration waves from Germany and Ireland in the late 19th century equaled or exceeded the modern wave from Mexico.

Mexicans aren't the only ones leaving the US. Bernanke and the Federal Reserve banksters are trying to level the global playing field by devaluing the US dollar and lowering the US long-term standard of living.

Higher taxes, food, lower wages is turing the US more Mexico-like. You'll see more Americans finding opportunity outside the US.

American pilots being offered much more money in China than in the US. I have seen a number of talented people leaving the US for better positions overseas.

That's the plan. The elites have always despised the middle class in the america. People with a little money get too independent for their liking. They like poor people, so much easier to manage. Nothing "just happens". They want you to become so desperate you'll do anything for a job.

Great, so you move your family to China to fly planes that wouldn't pass the safety inspection in the US?  I don't think people make rational decisions about money vs. safety trade-offs--witness all the motorcylists  trying to beat the high cost of fuel by risking their lives more.

I don't believe that shit. When I look out my window and see natural-born Americans doing landscaping, working construction, laying cement, working in the fields, then I will believe it. Now I still see a white guy running crews, and Spanish-speaking workers, and I will bet a years pay that they are ALL illegal and working under the table. Every single one of them. And now you know why your country is FUCKED. Neither party wants to do anything about illegals. Repubs get slave wage workers and no OSHA regs.....Dems get lock-step voters every couple of years. They win....you lose.

The one true role of government is and always has been to protect its citizens from enemies domestic and abroad. Open borders and 30+ million illegals in this country is akin to a hostile invasion and always did fall within the purview of the government to prevent. We are not advocating for the government to do anything beyond what they were originally constitutionally sworn to do for the past 236 years. And I don't compete with illegals for jobs. I just have to live with their redneck asses all over my city living 10+ to a house, acting a fool, not following rules and depressing home values because of it. Game. Set. Match. You lose.

Lots of Mexicans in here today I guess. Funny how people say you should always follow the rules until a rule comes up that THEY don't like. Anyone who down voted me is un-American and a hypocrite. Compete with people that shouldn't even be here and aren't even legally ALLOWED to be here? Get the fuck outa here with that horse shit line. That is so retarded as to not even be worthy of bytes on this site. In fact it should be a bannable offense. I'll gladly compete with Americans for jobs. Why even have rules if nobody follows them and 50% of the population seems to think it's perfectly OK to allow an army of foreign workers in the country adding to an already depressed wage condition? You guys must be stars at the U.N. no borders conventions who you obviously shill for.

Fact is this is probably great news for the state budgets of California, Arizona, and Texas. The fix will not be correctly reported and more than likely politicians will spin it to there advantage. The bottom line is that the additional tax on the system (hospitals, schools, and other government services) from the free riders will be gone.

Amazing, even here, in one of their most crucial and strategic Societal Disruption projects, the democrats and the nefarious money power behind them prove to be their own worst enemy.

Their plan for unlimited immigration fom Mexico for a host of less than savory reasons is DOA, and by their own hand. It's just one many unintended consequences of the frenzied slaying of the American Golden Goose.

Let's hope the globalist's planned "NAFTA Corridor" dies on the vine next.

Less Mexcans, the only good thing to come from the financial collapse. ILLEGAL aliens destroyed wage growth in Western North Carolina. The Mexcans lived eight or ten to a trailer and sent most of the money back to Mexico so they could have better houses built than mine for a tenth of the price. They did nothing to support the community but took the benefits. If Obama is getting the rap for kicking the poor Mexcans back where they belong then, Thank you President Obama.

PS: and fuck those "anchor baby" excuses. Send them all back with the baby having dual citizenship and when he or she turns 21  they can decide if the want to be Mexcan or Amerikan. That way my taxes don't have to support them until the grow up. But that is WAY too damn simple of a solution.

wrong. I actually appreciate them being deported. I dont think people should be here illegaly but I know that they are not the cause of the problems in the US. Deport every single illegal today and the exact same problems would still exist in 10 years.Including long wait times for people are not paying for medical services, including job destruction from over regulation of industry, including manufaturers moving due to minimum wage , incuding fraudlent benefits being taken by those who should not be receiving them

The government is the problem not Mexicans.

always looking at the one side of things. cheap labor equals cheaper products. cheaper products means more savings. more savings equals more wealth. less immigrants only means that now those jobs can move overseas or to mexico. mexicans living 8 to a household means lower home prices.

support the community? What every place I go with Mexicans has a pretty robust downtown with good food, diversie stroes including butcher shops, bakeries, leather goods, custom furniture shops and on and on. Maybe you meant they didnt support the small world you live in, guess what it is not their obligation to support you.

But I am sure you have done all the calculating you need to KNOW that is was bad having them come in.

This place is getting more full of losers looking to blame others for their problems and looking for an excuse to fail by the day. I'd bet good money at least half the regular commenters on this blog are convicted felons who've failed at everything and just LOVE the idea of the world collapsing - misery loves company. A lot who like to claim to be libertarians (and don't even seem to know what that means) and who decry big government (rightly so) are the first to ask the government to force out the people they can't compete with, or are just too stupid and lazy to compete.

Anyone, regardless of race, origin, or how the fuck they got here, is an asset to the rest of us who HAVE SKILLS AND GUMPTION if they do also. Earl Raab, executive director emeritus of the Perlmutter Institute of Jewish Advocacy has said:

"The Census Bureau has just reported that about half of the American population will soon be non-white or non-European. And they will all be American citizens. We have tipped beyond the point where a Nazi-Aryan party will be able to prevail in this country. We have been nourishing the American climate of opposition to ethnic bigotry for about half a century. That climate has not yet been perfected, but the heterogeneous nature of our population tends to make our constitutional constraints against bigotry more practical than ever."

Jewish neocon Ben Wattenberg has said: "The non-Europeanization of America is heartening news of an almost transcendental quality".

Things will really get interesting when Mexico starts complaining about all of the Americans coming over the border to get out of the USSA.

There seems to be increased ex-pat interest by U.S. citizens.   It will be interesting to see if there is a flock of citizens that leave the USSA prior to Barbara Boxer tax law goes into effect (no foreign travel for persons owing $50k or more in taxes).  It might be the last chance for them to legally exit...which is disturbing.

Safety or liberty.  Make your choice.  In the U.S. you live in a totalitarian police state that is marginally safter than Mexico.  In Mexico you live in a quasi-failed state run by cartels that may be less safe than the U.S.  But there is no TSA at the air ports, and if they can't stop the drug cartels do you really think they have time to worry about what you're doing?

Exactly. And all of Mexico isn't run by cartels. Just the border areas. The south is awesome and far safer than the U.S. and with less crime. You can do mostly what you want without being hassled or even SEEING cops most weeks. TSA is in the airports there (and most anywhere) but only IF you're flying to the U.S. Southern Mexico, or Costa Rica, is kind of like going back to America in the 70s. I feel freer just being in either place - then again, I can say the same for most anywhere outside the U.S. or even worse, the UK - the most fucked up, totalitarian police state the world has probably ever seen.

Yes, the inflow of illegals has declined and according to some reports, more are departing than arriving. Let's hope that's so. However, there are still millions resident in the US, consuming social services - schools, Medi-Cal, roads, etc. - while paying little or nothing in return. There are also added burdens in terms of congestion, language issues (bilingual provision of services in courts, schools, etc.), crime, etc. So, while I hope the outflow is underway, there's a long way to go before we can declare any kind of victory for the taxpayers of IOUSA.

"unauthorized Mexican immigrants living in the U.S.—to 6.1 million in 2011"

The Pew Hispanic Center's numbers cannot be trusted.  They are a pro-open borders, pro-welfare, organization.  6.1 million?  Try 30 million.  Travel around the U.S. and see that the illegals are EVERYWHERE.  I can drive to literally any random shopping center within 30 miles of this place and find 50 Mexican guys hanging around all day hoping someone offers them some under the table work for cash.  And it's not just in the cities, I see them out in the country/rural areas too, and not just in agricultural areas.  They don't really need to work because their unwed mamasita gets free housing and $1,000 a month on her EBT card.

When I was in elementary school in the 1980's, there was 1 Hispanic kid in the whole school.  Now they are the majority nationwide.  6.1 million?  Lol, who is actually stupid enough to believe that?

Whenever I go to the grocery store there is always some fat 5 foot nothing Hispanic cunt and her 3+ kids in front of me buying food with her EBT card.  Makes me sick.

The flood of illegal Mexican aliens into the U.S. coupled with the U.S. government's OBVIOUS endorsement of said illegal immigration is one of the major factors in my decision to leave the U.S.  A nation that does not enforce its borders is hardly a nation.  And what good is American citizenship?

As an American citizen I have a social security number, records, files, and I am tracked world wide by our fascist totalitarian police state.  But the illegals have no such things.  They exist free of police state tyranny.  Nobody tracks them from birth to death in databases.  And if they get in trouble, they simply take a bus back to Mexico and hang out with family and friends for a couple of months before coming back to the U.S. with a new name to a new city.

Illegal aliens are free men while the rest of us are their slaves.  Paying taxes to support them and their anchor babies.

Having family in the medical field (working in hospital ER's) really helps dispel the anti-truth that circulates to the top.

The amount of illegals in the emergency room for smelly farts and coughs is astounding. Sure, they "do the jobs that no one else will", however the incurred medical costs are staggering. Also, a language barrier is really advantageous to staying "admitted". If you have health insurance they get you out as soon as possible - the recent surge in re-admissions is decent evidence of such.  They are as bad as the old who use Medicare every time they have indegestion.

Altruism makes you feel good, but when the subjects are abjectly abusing the system it must be factored into your pitty quotients.

The fact that they are here illegaly makes them prey to those who would use them for criminal purposes.  That increases the crime rates across the country.  They also don't seem to have any reason to obey other laws that most americans obey.  Most ZHers seem to be against having as many laws as we do and I am in that group.  But there is something about breaking laws that tends to make people feel it's OK to break more laws.  Some laws are for our protection.  I would rather not live in a society where murder, rape, and robbery are common occurences.  We should work to change the things we don't like, and we should do that in our own country.

The U.S. government could have stopped illegal immigration at any time by simply cracking down on employers.  Simple, if they can't work and make money, they don't come here.  But the U.S. government OBVIOUSLY endorses open border policies.

It is the policy of the United States Federal government to maintain open borders and allow any non-whites to come to the U.S. in any number without regard to economic standing, education, ability to speak English, diseases, medical records, etc.  In fact, everything is in Spanish now anyway.  ATMs, everything at Lowes and Home Depot, government documents, etc.

I never go to any car washes because there's nobody working there but Hispanics.  I try to avoid any restaurant that has Hispanics working in the kitchen, but that basically leaves me eating Chinese food every night.  I try to give as little money as possible to support these illegals or their anchor babies.

Moving to Australia to live around other white people.  Enjoy your decline America, it's irreversible now.  Not enough European people left to maintain European living standards.

US corporations are in Mexico.  However, the minimum hourly wage was lowered by them, which lowered the living standards of Mexicans in Mexico greatly.

Today, immigrants from China outnumber the immigrants from South of the Border.  They arrive to jobs created by Chinese businessman who have purchased corporations and are hiring only Chinese immigrants as they are quoted as being better skilled.

You'll have to google search to verify that but you will if you can take them time to do research with "2011" and "2012" in your search.

It's because they have no work here..... because no one has work.

construction is the only "real work" thats actually "productive" to society.

When you stop building, you essentially stop building society, any "work" from there on end is just re-distribution of whatever wealth already exists.

Other wealth like food is consumed, so it doesn't add to the long term wealth as a nation.... so food services are semi - productive in the sense that they only let us stay alive to continue to re-distribute the wealth.

Since the rich people are leaving the country because they can afford to... they are taking their money with them, so the prospects of America re-bounding and such is dismal at best.

All thats missing is stagering high taxes..... because you know its better to tax to death the few people still working than it is to lower the taxes and have more people working thus spreading out the tax burdon.... a tax burdon which has essentially become meaningless since the revenue collected doesn't account for shit anymore...

Carefree days of 1997 seems so so long ago. If somebody wakes up today from coma after 15 years in the US, I'd bet after a week walking around he would be thinking, what the hell is matter with you all! The change was gradual but USA is looking more and more like militarized Nazi USA. Full blown Nazi state is just one terrorist incident away.

All in all, great US citizen thread. Very entertaining.

Now it's time to make it even more entertaining, with comedy provided by the little dancing and howling Chinese citizenism trained monkey.

Watch him crap on the roadside and then throw his monkey poop at bad old US citizenism.

Then, just for laughs, in his very next comment, he'll be dressed up in his little monkey-sized Uncle Sam costume, promoting, advocating, and singing praises to the glory of US citizenism.

A singing, dancing, poop flinging Chinese citizenism monkey trained to advocate US citizenism.

The trained monkey nature of Chinese citizenism is eternal, and entertaining.
