US Re-escalates, Responds To Iran Warning

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier today, we reported of Iran's threat to further escalate if the US were to bring back its aircraft carrier (either CVN74 or any other one) back into the Persian Gulf. Now, the US has just decided to call Iran's bluff. From Bloomberg:

  • CARRIER DEPLOYMENTS IN GULF WILL CONTINUE, U.S. SAYS
  • PENTAGON SAYS NAVY TRANSITS THROUGH STRAIT OF HORMUZ ARE NECESSARY TO SUPPLY U.S. MISSIONS IN GULF REGION
  • U.S. MILITARY MOVEMENTS IN PERSIAN GULF `REGULARLY SCHEDULED'
  • U.S. RESPONDS TO IRAN WARNING AGAINST FUTURE CARRIER MOVES

And so the fully-armed grenade is now back in Iran's court.

50% was an arbitrary number, but the idea is that those who profit from and decide to go to war should be putting more at risk.  Who benefits from war, who loses?  There exists great asymmetry.

Some folks inherit star-spangled eyes;
ooh, they'll send you down to war.
And when you ask 'em,  'How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer, "More, more, more."

It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no militarist's son.
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate one.

Why not start a war when the only inconvenience will be that in the first week you may miss a few cocktail hours, but that will be OK since the media will be fawning all over you.  Kill, ravage and plunder at will without even having the most miniscule concern about being responsible for an orgy of death that you order - My, this is GOOD work if you can get it and get it they did....

Iran won't do fuck all.
China is going to see them shut the Strait down, choking off Chinese industry in the process??? It shuts Japan down at the same time???
Iran doesn't have the money, nor do they have enough credit or domestic support.
Stop dreaming of war - talking about mobile this or super torpedo that. You sound like a bunch of kids playing with your G.I. Joes in the sandbox, wiping your snotty noises on your sleeves.

This is the last war anyone wants.

Keep your eyes posted on the prices of natural gas and oil. Iran certainly could use a bump. What was that business of Iran and Israel doing business a little while back? Any response should be extremely limited.

Let's just say it, the Middle East is on fire

- Iran (enough said) - whatever happens, war or embargo, that is just 5% of the planet oil production that gets hit.

- Qatar paying Al Qaeda militians to attack Syria (same guys Qatar used in Libya)

- Qatar prime minister saying on the radio that the Saudi monarchy is living its last days.

- Turkey fucking around in Kurdistan.

- Iraq having blasts after blasts.

Honeslty, WTI is too cheap here....

one would hope, at some point, DC would show a little class, play the bigger man and not get into a pissing contest with a yet another country that presents absolutely zero credible threat to US safety and security.

but no, apparently that is to much to ask, to expect our representatives to at least act like adults. instead we get prepubescent "I'm gonna kick your ass if you don't shut up" school yard politics. God I am so proud of our public officials in Washington I could vomit, they just keep making the Americans who voted for them look like fuckin' idiots.

I know war is a foregone conclusion, I get that, everything is running just the way the script intended, but for god sakes is the reality TV show, jersey shore, jerry springer drama really necessary? if you are going to send in the carrier, than shut the hell up about it and do it, when you have the bigger stick (by far) this back and forth, threats and counter threats is just embarrassing, classes, tasteless, unnecessary bullshit.

The first incident at Tonkin was real and intiated by the North Vietnamese, the second one was a phantom and used by Johnson (a democrat).  There is little comparison to this (outside of a democrat President in office) with Vietnam.  Vietnam was about checking communism, and the politicans tied the military's hands so failure was almost preordained.  This is about a vital international seaway that keeps economies from decending into anarchy.  It is easy to see that less blood would be spilled keeping the strait open than in shutting it down.  I pray nobody attempts to put this to the test.

Wrong, kralizec. 4th generation warfare is too tough to beat when fighting a committed adversary, especially in the countryside.

Short of carpet-nuking Vietnam, the war was unwinnable. Or is that what you meant by "politicans tied the military's hands"?  Are you nuts?

What people seem to forget is that the vendors make a fortune in modern war, and that, my friends, is victory enough for the oligarchy.

In the 2002 Millenium Challenge military games, the red team (Iran) sank the whole Fifth Fleet in this computer simulated encounter in the Straights.  The reason why we stopped building aircraft carriers soon after is there is no way to protect them.

Post, WWI, the U.S. Navy laughed at the aviator carrying out the first aerial bombardment demonstration on an old battleship.  They sunk it, and the age of the aircraft carrier was born.  That age ended in 2002.

These missiles are a lot more sophisticated today than they were in the 2002 simulation.  History may be about to repeat itself.

This is one very interesting read.  Although it talks about a Neocon agenda to sacrafice the Fifth Fleet, the central banking/NWO agenda is a bit more clear today so just ignore the political partisanship.  www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18687.htm

Iran can't do squat?

Sure, and Argentina can't do squat against Great Britain, right?  Maybe you missed what these missiles could do back during the Falklands War, but they are far, far more sophisticated now.  If you think there's an anti missile system that can stop them, you're dead wrong.  Warfare has changed, and these carriers are obsolete this close to their coast.

We'll know when the Iranians have deployed anti-ship missiles....our capitol ships will not be near them...We will have to "clear" the strait to transit...It was an Eurobus A300 our missle cruiser shot down from inside Irainian territorial waters with the loss of all 281 women and children...this will not end well, "innoccent civillians" is a 20th century fallacy, wouldnt be surprised if the Iranians had already moved thier chinese ship killers to the beaches of thier territory..
