Venezuela Gets First Shipment Of Physical Gold Today

Tyler Durden's picture

Back in August, the news that Venezuela ruler Hugo Chavez had decided to repatriate his gold from London vaults made headlines and was one of the key catalysts sending gold to its all time highs north of $1900/oz. Since then the story died down with no updates. Until today: Bloomberg has reported that Venezuela will receive the first shipment of gold reserves being repatriated from U.S., Canadian and European banks today. "Chavez, speaking on state television, said that the bars will be escorted to vaults in Venezuela s central bank by the military after arriving by air to the South American country. The gold that was over there in England will soon be arriving,  said Chavez.  The opposition says that I'll put the gold in the presidential palace or give it away to Cuba or something. This gold is going back to where it should have never left -- to the Central Bank of Venezuela. Chavez, a former paratrooper and self-professed socialist, in August ordered the central bank to repatriate $11 billion of gold as a safeguard against volatility in financial markets." Will Chavez demonstrate phenomenal foresight having collected his gold just months ahead of Europe falling into the abyss of a toxic debt spiral or were his worries unfounded? It remains to be seen. However, he will probably sleep sounder knowing that his gold is no longer in the vaults of the LBMA, HSBC, or several hundred feet under the New York Fed. That is, of course, if the "presidential palace or Cuba or something" ends up having real 999 gold, and not just several blocks of Tungsten with a pretty plating on top.

What Chavez understands is that he has stolen many assets without making any compensation to the owners.  When international justice finally falls upon him he does not want there to be assets which can be used to pay the judgements.  This movbement of the gold is simply that act of a criminal trying to escape from the consiquences of his crime.

And US corporations do not "steal" assets in the developing world through bribery and the projection of military power? Pot, kettle, black.

So he 'stole' from Exxon, BFD.

Umm, one wonders why it took so much time to arrange for this delivery. I'm sure that transfer request had to be authenticated. However (supposedly) the gold just sits there in a cage on a pallet with Ven's tent card sitting on top, yes? Possibly testing to find if the bars are good, then trying to find good bars to replace the tungsten ones? This has taken close to 3 months.

And...its just a partial shipment...

Sadly, the Venezuelan people will never see the Gold.  Hugo "No Good" Chavez will take the gold to Cuba, etc.

When you are rich in oil and more than 3/4 of the population live in poverty...that tells you everything about Venezuela and their Govt :(

It would certainly provoke debate.

There is really only one sure way to test the difference and that is to get a sample bar refined. The considerable difference in melting point between gold and tungsten really is the difficult part to fake.

Funny.  $11B is the value of gold on the Fed's balance sheet.  I guess the USA has as much real money as Venezuela.

Granted, the Fed values it at ~$40/oz. but still interesting.

At least the Germans aren't invading and bombing the hell out of every country that they want to influence, like the cabal in control of the US government is doing. So if there is a Fourth Reich, it is right here in America.

And if Paul Krugman knows anything about Medieval history, he'd know that Alexander Nevsky was a Russian, not a German:

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/25/video-bringing-fiscal-discipline-to-the-european-periphery/

And if this world-renowned economist knows anything about what the Russians are currently doing with their money, he'd know that they're using it to buy up gold rather than Euros.

Which means, at least to me it does, that Russia is seeking self preservation, and not making plans to dominate and control Europe. And as Tyler points out, Venezuela appears to making a similar move to do the same.

But hey, what do you expect from a country that's slowly but surely making its way down the yellow-BRIC road!

An article about Chavez brings out the stupidist, most ill-informed comments, gratituously nasty comments on ZH.  Chazez is hated because he was one of the few really to diminish elite power and accomplish real land and other reforms, so the elite controlled media of the world will disparage him to and beyond the grave. This is not to say that he has not caved in at times, for example, giving up Colombian rebels, or done things like unfairly confiscate foreign properties.  But, overall, he is a true revolutionary who has greatly helped the people of Venezuela and indirectly other peoples of Latin America.

His death will be a huge loss for the disenfranchised people of Latin America.

Its amazing how much cancer a man can have with a nice set of hair clippers.

My wife gives me cancer every Sunday,i like to look neat and tidy for Monday morning.

A very clever man indeed once told me "Never shit a shitter!" Hugo Chavez is a very shrewed man indeed,he knows how to keep his power without the aid of secret police, torture camps, phoney propaganda and a phantom menace unlike the present US government.

He also knows a thing or two about global finance and he never ever wrote a book about the first great depression.

Unless he changes his policies Chavez will need the gold to buy food on the international market. If you study bills passed by Congress you will have noted that government agencies now have the legal authority to control food production all they way down to victory gardens. The rioting in Egypt started over food cost. The USDA will get Chavez's gold.

Oil you say. The US uses 25% of the world's oil supply. And how about that EURO? The Great Recession was slowed by bailouts and stimulus but not stopped. Free up 5% of the oil supply and watch the price drop.

This time, Chavez has done the right thing!

Venezuela has ~30 millions people. It is a large country with a very difficullt landscape to wage a war. It is not desert Libya with a leader prostituting itself avery other minute.

Quote from Chavez:

Venezuela recuperar lo que "nunca debió salir del país", en palabras de Chávez.

Venezuela has recovered what never should leave the country.

Chavez has also deposited vast amounts of US cash in the more friendly confines of banks in China, Russia and Brazil.

The Trustee in the MF Global case has issued a notice stating that none of the property secured by Warehouse Receipts is being liqudated .  that includes gold and silver .   that means whatever is in the vaults should be off the market for a while.  could this cause a temporary shortage in PMs?   Not sure but since part of my allocation to PMs was being held in my MF Global account , I have started buying again to replace it.   However this time I am taking actual delivery like I did for most of my other PMs.   Glad prices are falling.
