Videos From Indonesia Following 8.7 Earthquake

Tyler Durden's picture

While luckily not as powerful as last year's Japanese earthquake, which in turn led to a catastrophic tsunami, this morning Indonesia has been battered by a series of magnitude 8+ quakes and aftershocks in the Banda Aceh and Sumatra regions of the country. Also unlike last year, the nature of the quake made it less likely a tsunami was generated because the earth moved horizontally, rather than vertically, and therefore had not displaced large volumes of water, Bruce Presgrave of the United States Geological Survey told the BBC. The geological map and update from the USGS below summarizes all the action we have seen to date.

Below are some of the videos that have been released so far:

Reuters has a summary of the events so far:

An 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia on Wednesday, sending residents around the region scurrying from buildings and raising fears of a huge tsunami as in 2004, but authorities said there were no reports suggesting a major threat.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Aceh, the Indonesian province closest to the earthquake.

The quake struck at 0838 GMT and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said soon afterwards a tsunami watch was in effect for the entire Indian Ocean. It later said the threat of a big tsunami had receded, although the warning remained in place.

"It doesn't look like a major tsunami. But we are still monitoring as tsunamis come in waves," Victor Sardina, a geophysicist on duty at the Hawaii-based institute, told Reuters.

Individual countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, issued their own warnings.

People near the coast in six Thai provinces were ordered to move to higher ground and authorities shut down the international airport in the beach resort town of Phuket.

The quake struck 308 miles southwest of the city of Banda Aceh, on the northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island, at a depth of 20.5 miles, the U.S. Geological survey said.

Indonesia's disaster management agency said power was down in Aceh province and people were gathering on high ground as sirens warned of the danger.

"The electricity is down, there are traffic jams to access higher ground. Sirens and Koran recitals from mosques are everywhere," said Sutopo, spokesman for the agency.

But Yudhoyono said there were no signs of a disaster.

"There is no tsunami threat although we are on alert," said he said at a joint news conference in Jakarta with visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron, who said Britain was standing ready to help if needed.

"The situation in Aceh is under control, there's a little bit of panic but people can go to higher ground," Yudhoyono said.

Felt everywhere:

Wednesday's quake was felt as far away as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and in southern India, residents said.

Hundreds of office workers in the Indian city of Bangalore left their buildings while the Indian port of Chennai closed down because of the danger of a tsunami, the port said.

The quake was in roughly in the same area as the 2004 quake which was at a depth of 18 miles along a fault line running under the Indian Ocean, off western Indonesia and up into the Bay of Bengal.

One expert told the BBC the Wednesday quake was a "strike-slip" fault, meaning a more horizontal shift of the ground under the sea as opposed to a sudden vertical shift, and less risk of a large displacement of water triggering a tsunami.

The quake was also felt in Sri Lanka, where office workers in the capital, Colombo, fled their offices, and in Phuket, both of which were hit hard by the 2004 tsunami.

Since the 2004 tsunami was directly Bush's fault, the non-tsunami of 2012 will be because Obama prevented it.

We should see another 8+ in Japan over the next 3 months and a 6 + on the New Madrid over the same time frame.

Good luck all.

Interesting to see links to PS NING at least twice in the past 24 hours here on ZH. Many of us have been following Zeta Talk for a while. I 99% believe Zeta Talk. Just need that 1% to really change my life. A few more earthquakes in regions the Zeta's predicted and I'll be convinced. Seeing PX with my own eyes also would make me quit this matrix and prepare. Good luck all (but I hope not).

Two months ago I would have called you crazy.  But I have studied some geology and I'm a fairly open minded person - too many things point to Planet X.  Whereabouts are you?  Near or far from a safe zone?  Have you done any preps?  If you can make to the hills in under two hours and have some preps you should be okay, but if you are like on Long Island or S. Florida, I would move now.

Here is my quick list of things which seemingly unexplainable a soon near pass by Planet X would explain:

1. On the verge of martial law.

2.  FEMA camps.

3.  The 188 day earthquake cycle

4.  Chemtrails (hinder viewing of Planet X)

5. No one cares US debt won't be paid back.

6.  Denver underground bunkers and the others.

7. All US ambassadors recalled to US for talks in Jan 2011 - never happened before

8. Chinese ghost cities with housing for up to 65 million FAMILIES

9. Continuous flooding in SE Asia

10.  increased mass sightings of UFO's

11.  Huge amount of recent top level resignations worldwide

12. There was another one that began with "C" but I forgot

Feel free to add your own............

The Fukushima quake moved a massive plate (name SLIPS my mind!!!), so we are looking at more and more and more of this.

I suggest people subscribe to THe Extinction Protocol, their updates are timely and very very good.

Hope everyone stays safe.

Oh yeah, after much protesting, India just gave the go ahead for th efinal comissioning and start up of a huge Russian built Nuke plant real close to where the last Tsunami had Hit India.

So, the plan is still the same I think. NuKular pollution via geo-engineering.

CPL, want to know somethign fascinating? two of the richest and most powerful men in the world are two Gujarati (Indian State) guys in Niger and one other country in Africa where they are the Uranium KINGS. these guys are tremendously powerful and totally un-known.

I don't think Uranium is a problem. Can you imagine how much the Ruski's can, er, lend us if they feel like it?

But it's those uber-powerful Indian's in Africa that control a majority of the world's uranium supply that hold the key.

Plus, there is this:

The countries where more than 100 tU/year production reported are Kazakhstan (28%), Canada (20%), Australia (16%), Namibia (8%), Russian Federation (7%), Niger (6%), Uzbekistan (5%), United States (3%), Ukraine (2%), China (2%), India (1%), South Africa (1%), Czech Republic (1%), Brazil (1%) and Malawi (<1%)

As I understand it, there is a specific reason why the world still uses Uranium/Plutonium nuke plats instead of the more cheaper and safer to use Thorium plants;
Uranium/Plutonium plants can recycle decommissioned atomic bombs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorium_fuel_cycle#List_of_thorium-fueled_reactors

The only ones I see still in operation are experiments....Not commercial designs for a Thorium fuel cycle based reactor...  India's Kakrapar-1 does not count– it is actually a converted PWR....

Don't get me wrong, Thorium may be a possible solution to the bridge problem... but I will bet you that within your lifetime that no more that 2% of the worlds electricity supply will be Thorium based....

You really gotta lay off the conspiracy theory stuff or loosen the chin strap on the collander....

I think the problem with thorium reactors that they are not self-sufficent. They need source of neutrons to operate (plutonium). Therefore, thorium reactors now can act as a "leverage" on conventional uranium that can be used to manufacutre plutonium (breeder reactors) to run thorium reactors. I am not sure how much "leverage" can be achievied. If it 10:1 than it is unlikely that we have more time than current uranium estmates (~70 years). If it is 100:1 maybe we even have room to grow a bit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorium

India's Kakrapar-1 reactor is the world's first reactor which uses thorium rather than depleted uranium to achieve power flattening across the reactor core. India, which has about 25% of the world's thorium reserves, is developing a 300 MW prototype of a thorium-based Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR). The prototype is expected to be fully operational by 2013, after which five more reactors will be constructed. Considered to be a global leader in thorium-based fuel, India's new thorium reactor is a fast-breeder reactor and uses a plutonium core rather than an accelerator to produce neutrons. As accelerator-based systems can operate at sub-criticality they could be developed too, but that would require more research.India currently envisages meeting 30% of its electricity demand through thorium-based reactors by 2050.

Using U/Pu as the "ignition" is the easiest, but not the only option it seems.
