To the Shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway:
This is to let you know that I have been diagnosed with stage I prostate cancer. The good news is that I’ve been told by my doctors that my condition is not remotely lifethreatening or even debilitating in any meaningful way. I received my diagnosis last Wednesday. I then had a CAT scan and a bone scan on Thursday, followed by an MRI today. These tests showed no incidence of cancer elsewhere in my body.
My doctors and I have decided on a two-month treatment of daily radiation to begin in mid-July. This regimen will restrict my travel during that period, but will not otherwise change my daily routine.
I feel great – as if I were in my normal excellent health – and my energy level is 100 percent. I discovered the cancer because my PSA level (an indicator my doctors had regularly checked for many years) recently jumped beyond its normal elevation and a biopsy seemed warranted.
I will let shareholders know immediately should my health situation change. Eventually, of course, it will; but I believe that day is a long way off.

Last week was the most extraordinary week in Warren Buffett's history – but he lived his business life as if this was the most normal time in the world.
As Buffett announced today, he was diagnosed with Stage I prostate cancer last Wednesday, after a biopsy the previous day. On Thursday he had a CAT scan and bone scan, with these showing that the cancer had not spread elsewhere in his body.
On that same Thursday, he and a small group had dinner with his non-cousin, entertainer Jimmy Buffett, at a new Omaha restaurant called J. Coco's. Jimmy was in town for a performance two days later.
The following day – Friday – Buffett, the elder, was host to 160 business students from such universities as MIT, University of Chicago, University of Tennessee, and Peru's Universidad del Pacifico. Following the usual routine for such visits (there are six scheduled for this school year) the students toured two Berkshire retail subsidiaries, held a two-and-a-half hour Q&A session with Buffett, and lunched at one of his favorite restaurants, Piccolo's.
The riff at Piccolo's was that Jimmy Buffett turned up for lunch, creating an instant sensation.
At Jimmy's performance next night at Century/Link Center, the first person on stage was Warren Buffett, who deadpanned a "Welcome to the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting." Actually, the only thing dissonant about his greeting was that the Berkshire meeting, which is held at that same Center, spreads out to overflow rooms and actually draws many more people than the standing-room-only (and wildly enthusiastic) crowd that Jimmy Buffett attracted.
On Sunday Buffett caught his breath. Then, on Monday morning at 7:30 AM, he met with his doctors to discuss courses of treatment for his newly discovered illness.

Pretty much every man over the age of 70 has stage 1 prostate cancer. Does anyone find the timing of this announcement odd? It couldn't possibly have anything to do with his namesake tax proposal getting killed yesterday. Surely not.

I still think its rather strange that this happens to WB the day after a tax change for fairness. with his name all over it, was rejected. Yet out of fairness, Mr Buffetts companies have received mega taxpayer bucks for bailouts and I have not: define fairness.

While I am hard-pressed to wish anyone ill (well, aloud anyway) due to a mild fear of Karma...it would be absolutely poetic if the man with all of the money cannot buy a cure.
Maybe, if he is ill enough someday he will stop to consider how the rest of the world (of all ages) must cope with serious illnesses. We don't have all of the fundage he has to secure the best doctors, the best drugs, the best alternative healings, the best in stress-free care, etc.
But I suspect he will not.
I have to say that I do not care one whit that he is ill. He has given nothing to this world that makes him worthy of my pity.

Warren, dear, this could only happen to you because of your infinite goodness. As a piece of advice, next time you take a phone call from the president while in the bathtub, carry on with what you're doing in there, don't hold it, release it, it helps preventing this kind of cancer. The president's voice and his submission should be seen as nothing else but a big stimulent for a quicker release.
As for your future daily radiation treatment, I hope it will only kill the wicked part of you.
Buffett having a stage 1 (Gleason score) PC at his age isn't news. If he had NOT any signs of it would be. He probably ought to just watch and wait (as they say) until something else takes him out. Or is it possible that he has a plan to live forever? There is a new treatment of focused ultraviolet beam therapy that can destroy tumors in situ. If I had Buffett's money, I'd look into that (although it is only experimental in the UK studies it seems very successful), if I would do anything at all. I don't like the idea of radiation.
My dad is dying from Stage 4, metasticized, hormone refractive PC that has spread through his whole body. Treatment got him an extra 5 years of life, which is pretty great, and he just might make it to his 83rd birthday. Nothing anyone could have done, he was just unlucky. He had regular PSA tests and DREs, but this one went undetected until it was too late. For the majority of men, getting free PSA test and DRE are still a REALLY good idea. There are lots of new treatments in the pipeline that could cure you without robbing you of your manhood. That is is spite of the controversy about PSA testing. And there are better tests on the way. If you have a young, hot wife like I do, you want to keep your Robert Johnson playing the songs she wants to hear. Because we have a lousy family history, I started testing before I hit 40. PC is a truly lousy way to die, and most treatments make you (at best) impotent. Maybe because it affects only men there is so little interest.
If Buffett's going public about it gets even a few more fellows to start testing, then maybe he did something good, for a change.

As for there being "no evidence of cancer elsewhere", either he has brain cancer or he's a baldface liar. Yes, I realize the former is much less likely than the later for his endless pro-authoritarianism and anti-gold delusions/lies of recent years.
Funny. A cynic might say that he developed cancer on the advice of his lawyer. Glen Beck is kicking his ass over the Keystone pipeline. Obama has to approve the pipeline to get gas prices down. Buffett's house of cards collapses if that happens.
