The West Blinks - Iran Embargo Likely To Be Delayed By Six Months

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: Oil Sub $100.

And so the escalation ends, if only for the time being, as Iran chalks a (Pyrrhic?) victory.

  • EU IRAN OIL EMBARGO SAID TO BE LIKELY DELAYED BY SIX MONTHS

Why? Because the world slowly realized that the potential surge in oil prices would tip a world already on the verge of a recession even deeper into economic contraction. Not rocket science, but certainly something the US president apparently has been unable to comprehend, especially if hoping that he would merely transfer exports from Iran to his close ally Saudi Arabia which would cement its European market monopoly even further. Or, perhaps, someone just explained to Obama that Embargo in January + QE3 in March = No Reelection...

In other news, crude is now dumping.

Reuters on the topic earlier:

U.S. allies in Asia and Europe voiced support on Thursday for Washington's drive to cut Iran's oil exports, though fear of self-inflicted economic pain is curbing enthusiasm for an embargo that a defiant Iran says will not halt its nuclear programme.

On Thursday, Japan, whose economy is already deep in the doldrums after cuts in its nuclear power supply following last year's tsunami, pledged to take concrete action to cut its oil imports from Iran in response to an appeal for support from visiting U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

However, Tokyo's support was not without reservations.

Finance Minister Jun Azumi said Japan buys 10 percent of its oil from Iran. "We would like to take action concretely to further reduce in a planned manner," he said. But he added: "It would cause immense damage if they were cut to zero."

The European Union is more sympathetic to U.S. pressure on Iran. EU foreign ministers are expected to agree on a ban on imports of Iranian crude oil on Jan. 23.

However, even Europe, whose governments largely share the concern of Israel and Washington over Iran's nuclear ambitions, is looking for ways to limit the pain of an embargo.

"We expect a slow and gradual implementation of what will eventually become a full embargo," said Mike Wittner from Societe Generale. "Europe has the same concerns about its fragile economy and an oil price spike as the U.S., probably even more".

Firms in Iran's three biggest EU oil customers, Italy, Spain and Greece, all suffering acute economic discomfort, have lately extended existing purchase deals in the hope to at least delay the impact of any embargo for months, traders told Reuters.

Corollary: Iranian Rial appreciates?

Their finances better improve really fast. Close the Straights and then sell the oil to China at a way higher price anyway. We are betting that Ahmedinejad rolls back the crazy if we send the price of oil, and therefore his income, lower? Or something... Anyway, looks like *someone finally figured out that oil at $150 will wipe out the world.

Sanctions work a number of ways.

In the past they've been put in place just so some "special" people could go in behind closed doors and price gouge.

Good thing is the last willing supplier of oil to Greece can continue doing that. The bad thing is that Greece still has no money to pay for it.

It will go over, and later on @ ZH, you can read about this divergence for going on five days now.  And of course, once that line breaks, the one both of us see, coupled with the break on oil, added to today's bad data, and with the cherry on top that volume confirms absolutely nothing ...the "Context" boys will explain that once again, equities are utterly clueless.

Just sayin'...

That's the funny thing about these peak oil empires. They don't get it. The military will not solve the economic, energy or resource deficit, they only add to it. The longer they play these stupid games the weaker they become. Idiocy. Paul gets it. Nobody else does.

The US military is part of our energy investment. But it's bleeding us dry because the military cannot procur what is not there.

yes, the military is part of our energy portfolio but it's still a riculously poor investment. Iraq has some of last sweet crude but that doen't mean the Iraqis are stupid enough to hand it over to us. On the contrary, we were stupid enough to  severely under estimate the price of our investment and the ease of the swindle. These actions have very little to do with long term, intelligent energy strategy and everything to do with a criminal cartel who don't want their "power" base to change. In the end, these wars will be the most immoral and self defeating strategy this country has ever produced.

and this is one of the reasons Admiral Mullen said our debt is a major national security threat.  we can't even use soft power against Iran because oil at $150 means Ben can't print, and if Ben can't print then the ponzi collapses.   so instead have to live with crazed near-nuclear mullahs calling our bluff.

Looks like we need a big dust up on both sides with true emotion (rage, disgust, bargaining, denial) 'cause the rubber duckies (carrier groups, fallen drones, pirate rescues, "easy to close the straights") stuff did not seem to get the people talking about the "dirty towel heads" and (vica-versa) the "inbred, illiterate american occupiers."

EDIT: And for those not old enough to remember, the "super cannon" was "Project Babylon" that the MSM hyped up as one of the reasons for gulf war one. the MSM looped footage of the thing every 15 minutes. They also put it in the play rotation after 9-11.

Everyone knows, as documented in wikipedia. Super guns are largely a rally device for nations who cant afford to build things like aircraft carriers and jet fighters. They are easily detected and destroyed before they ever fire a shot. (you cant move them, and a single bomb makes them inoperable)

Sure, put the blame on Europeans who are not on board with another senseless war to protect the US hegemony and that stinkin' ole' reserve currency.

In fact the US is broke and can't afford to take the aggressions to the next level. There is too much headwind against the US in the mideast theatre.

Withdrawing from Iraq due to financial issues. Uncle Sam can't afford to keep them employed. Let's call a spade a spade. The men and women coming home to what? No jobs and no hope for a job either.

The US is not in the same position it found itself in 1913 or in 1939. By now everyone with more than a Hollywood based miseduction is able to understand that the protection and expansion of US financial interests played a vital role in the two great wars.

Our douchebag leaders are blinking because the West is in a position of weakness, while Iran has been preparing for this singular confrontation for years. If Iran doesn't get nukes under a loser like Obama, they know they never will -- and they know it, so this is it for them.

Our dear leader of the free world, Obama, clearly gave Iran the big green light to produce nukes through his overt appeasement rhetoric before he was even elected. He further put us in a position of weakness by cutting off our domestic supplies. Now the dumbass realizes what the landscape for war really looks like and the messy calculation of $8 gallon gas does not look good for BHO's reelection prospects.

Just as an FYI, Jackson not only abolished the second national bank, but He also tried to abolish the electoral college. The same one that elected bush over Gore.

It appears the West has blinked, but have they?

I imagine this is because the US/NATO feel enough has been done to slow down Iran for the time being with the assaination of nuclear physicists, financial sanctions, currencies plummeting - give the Iranians 6 months to overthrow their government, that'll be the line getting spun in DC. Also halts the oil price rise which as mentioned above, would've fucked the West even more.

Problem with this strategy is the Iranians may well view it as the Wests bluff being called - this could embolden them. I don't support the Wests shenanighans in any shape or form but an emboldened Iran vs a perennially arrogant West could be dangerous down the line.

lol where have I said I hate them? I absolutely support their stand against Western propaganda and invasion, and their right to self determination and commercial realisation on the world stage.

I'm under no illusions as to the substance of our own Western leaders or their motives either.

What I am simply saying, which you seem to have misunderstood, is that Iran has a miltary & weapons & if they were to use them, or to put themselves in a position where they muct use them due to an (in)accurate assesment of Western frailities & their stomach for conflict, then that would be a worrying outcome for most of us.

The problem with these standoffs & tete a tetes is that both sides assume they understand what the other side has in mind, when it's pretty clear neither side has a scooby doo. Thus predicting an outcome is impossible & when you have several nations, all heavily armed doing so, its a worrying situation.

For simplicity and clarity > There are tensions in the Middle East. Several parties are very well armed. A conflict of any nature is a bad outcome for most people.

Is that easier for you to understand? Is there any mention of which news channel i watch, what my position on US foreign policy is or a defense of it? Have I stated that Iran is a threat to our freedom or that they are the aggressor in this situation? Have I advocated a pre emptive strike on Iran as a necessary action because of the things above that I HAVEN'T said in any of my posts?

I'm thinking china just might buy 100% of their oil. Maybe iran will even give them a little discount for the good gesture. A bit off topic now, but we really do need huge duties on imports. Create some jobs here, at least make usa a bit more self-sustaining in the event of global meltdown. We have our homes built and are able to produce adequate food internally. Besides evil, selfish intent, our only deabilitatinig expenses I see are imports, specifically oil. Reduce our dependency on these. The only way out is to create jobs-American made products. The debt obviously needs to be addressed.. devalue the dollar. As sad as it is trillions need to be printed while buying gold and silver behind the back. Its the only solution I see. Dirty tricks for sure! But that's the norm anyways.

For an embargo to hold, there would need to be enough excess production capacity to replace Iranian output. Right now, there isn't.

If the world goes into a deep recession, then an embargo might become possible. But if economic activity picks up over the next six months, you won't have an embargo then either. There is no support for an embargo in Asia, only weak support in Europe, and actually not so much support even in the US, considering that this is an election year.

The only wild card that I see is that Israel might bomb Iran on its own. Without US support this doesn't seem likely, but you never know.

Things on my mind
And I just don't have the time
And it don't seem right

They know they're gonna die

Now, this may seem a little bit crazy
But I don't think you should be so lazy

If you think you've heard this before
Well, stick around I'm gonna tell you more

One just like the other
Sin's a good man's brother
But is that right?

You tell me that I don't
Then I say I won't
But then I might

You said this is the way it's supposed to be
But it just don't seem right to me
And that's outta sight

Some folks need an education
Don't give up or we'll lose the nation

You say we need a revolution
It seems to be the only solution

Most of Iran's oil is exported to Asia, mainly China and Japan.

So even if Europe wants to ban their import from Iran, nothing will happen to Iran unless China decides otherwise.

Don't you find it bizarre that China is opposed to a military conflict in the middle east and prefers to promote diplomacy.

I am ready to get bombed by the vote downs but I don’t understand the ultra negative stance toward Israel.  We are Americans and while Israel has taken land from other countries in wars it didn’t start using weapons from the United States, they only did what any other country in their position would have done.  How could anyone advocate that an agent-country of the US getting nuked is a good thing?  How could anyone advocate that any country getting nuked is a good thing?

I believe that anyone blaming “The Jews” for what is wrong in this world at this time is really misguided or just deluded.

We [Americans] have sat back in homes more expensive than we should have “bought” driving SUV that waste fuel buying and watching big flat screen TVs—now bigger 3D flat screen TVs and consuming copious amounts of goods and services all the while increasing our credit and decreasing our savings while the egomaniacs we elected and sent to Washington with ZERO supervision from us have given us EXACTLY what we want: more government handouts, an easier life, and the right to make terrible social and financial decisions.

NOTHING CHANGES UNTIL WE CHANGE. NOTHING.

Our government is publishing data that presents our economic situation in the most positive light possible and even that is approaching dire.

We’ve got to stop blaming people, groups and systems and start putting our money where our mouth is.

I know a lot of you are buying gold, stocking-up on supplies, acquiring guns and ammunition and holding cash and that is all good preparation but what are you doing for our country?  If blaming "The Jews" is the answer then we truly are in trouble and when "they" are all gone, nothing will have changed.

(There's a sizable crowd here that's all about hating on Jews, or blacks, or women.  You see that pretty much anywhere there are unmoderated comments.)

Israel has been a foreign policy problem for the USA for 50 years.  According to UN vote, they're our staunchest ally, and we really like having a first-class military base right in the middle of everything, but since we set up a new one in Iraq, it's not quite as important.

We all know our interests are not really aligned with Israel's--the USA has no compelling realpolitik reason to care whether they ever complete annexation of the West Bank or extermination of the resident Palestinians.  Much of the support for the US/Israel alliance comes from Congressmen who could care less about Israel but need contributions from the Christian zionists (on the right) and the affluent American Jewry (both right and left).

So our politicians want to be seen as strong Israel supporters, but we've refused to greenlight an all-out ethnic-cleansing program for the West Bank.  The idea appears to have to been to gradually drive off the remaining refugees, but they're out-breeding the Israelis by a factor of about 3 to 1, and it's pretty obvious they don't want to go live in the neighboring ethnic Arab states.

It's probably more comforting to hate Israel than to acknowledge that we also are the bad-guys in that conflict.

Everything is going to drop, just like 2008- might be better, might be worse.  The question is really what the next bubble will be.

I'm putting odds on PMs being the next big thing- retail investors have been skinned too deeply and frequently to go back into equities, and housing has been heavily discredited.  QE3 isn't happening until after things crash hard, but it will happen then, and there are not a lot of investment strategies left.

Despite the press here and in a few other online forums, Au and Ag are nowhere near a mania yet- but the zeitgiest is beginning to turn in their favor.  It's not a short-term trade- it's a buy and hold based on fundimentals.  When desperate men have nowhere else to turn, they're going to start eying up the perfect 10-yr gold chart, and pumping it to everyone for all they're worth.  Less affluent folk will follow into silver and maybe copper.

Someday, that will be a memory as well- there is an end to the PM play, it's just not here yet.
