White House Comments On Surging Gasoline Prices
Just when we thought that when it comes to nonsensical announcements Europe is second to none, here comes the White House and takes the cake:
- WHITE HOUSE SAYS RISE IN GASOLINE PRICES CAUSED BY VARIETY OF GLOBAL FACTORS, INCLUDING UNREST IN SOME PARTS OF WORLD, FAST GROWTH IN OTHERS - RTRS
Uhm, would the "unrestful" parts of the world be those that have an above average US drone presence. At least we know that said price surges have nothing to do with the following chart:

As a reminder, we did note over the weekend that inflation is about to become the biggest concern of "investors" everywhere:
Oddly enough, one very crucial item missing is once again surging inflation courtesy of trillions in stealthy central banks reliquification, sending crude to the highest since May 2011, and the most expensive gas price in January on record.
Sure enough...
Rising U.S. gas prices have been fueled by a number of factors in world markets, including unrest and rapid growth in emerging markets, the White House said on Tuesday.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said recent increases in gasoline prices were "clearly the effect of a variety of factors on the global price of oil," including unrest in some parts of the world and economic growth in countries including India and China.
"The fact that this is happening only underscores the need ... to have a comprehensive energy policy," Carney told reporters.
U.S. gasoline prices jumped in January, leading overall consumer prices higher and offering a reminder of the risks energy costs pose to the economic recovery.
After rising throughout January, the national price for regular unleaded gasoline in the United States rose to $3.58 a gallon in the week through last Monday, according to the Energy Information Administration. It had started the year around $3.32 a gallon.

Not by everyone, Crash,
Even so, my friend says:
"One day sit back and imagine all of the cars, buses, airplanes, and cooking going on everyday by 7 billion people...try to imagine how much gas these activities are releasing. The arctic methane releases capture more easily the human imagination, but the real danger is far less exotic, it is activities that we consider normal---we assume that burning carbon compounds that we dig from the ground doesn't amount to a hill of beans, but the numbers suggest otherwise
I don't have a position on this----the planet will self-organize if we do nothing, but there probably will not be a 'human context' there after----if we don't care about the life of another----who can you trust to do a single thing?
This 'warming' could be a very fast trip om
One ton of Methane has the same greenhouse effect as 20 tons of Carbon Dioxide. If the whole greenhouse gas - induced global warming thing turns out to be true, then at some point, the methane gas emissions from the arctic (plus Siberia and Northern Canada) will vastly exceed all human emissions. At this point, they are not so serious.
We should be harvesting and burning as much of this gas as possible, no matter which view you take; either we are losing valueable hydrocarbons that could be used for growth, or we can reduce the greenhouse effect 95 percent from those gases that are going to get out anyways.
Matt,
I hope you are right about this, but why hasn't someone thought of this already with such a 'shortage of oil'?
Never mind----only sarcasm-----seriously, though why don't we cut our consumption even now when it is too late?
I never hear a word about conservation------we have so little faith in our fellow man
THanks Matt om
You're both right and wrong. It's a fals dichotomy to assume that only one explanation is correct for both situations. In 2007/08, speculation mostly moved oil prices up. Now, you can track oil moving on Greek rumors and 'news'.
I recall everyday the dollar fell, oil went up and the market went down.
the fact the two people junked you speaks volumes about the level of brainwashing current surrounding oil
you have it right - +1 from me
This is ZH. There is no censorship. People junk as they wish. I complain not a bit.
Dude, quit shrieking.... Don't know where you get YOUR data, but the last time I looked, when demand outstrips supply, then supply goes to zero if price remains stable....
Price of oil is going up because the Dollar is weakening, not because of supply concerns- quit thinking it's 1973 again.....
World is awash in oil- quit listening to the lemmings and wake up....
Just where is all this oil "washing up"....
The dollar is stronger than in 2008.... for better or worse, the world oil market doesn't give a fuck about the price of oil in gold...
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/guest-post-why-gasoline-consumption-tanking
And your point is?? How much has Chindian consumption risen??
The world is awash with oil ,just not cheap oil.
Why then have net exports declined since 2005???
isn't it obvious? You two have radically different definitions of the word "awash."
Damn.... I should have known he was using the TMOSELY Dictionary (Abridged Edition)....
You're right. A sudden ramp up in oil prices caused the collapse of the Great Ponzi to begin with, and central bank printing and bailouts has been the attempt to shore up a recovery. This recovery, however, cannot happen if oil prices continue to plateau. Ergo, print unto infinity.
I suspect they started printing just after they took out the world trade centers. Nothing from then up until now has realy even been price in yet.
Why isn't oil going up in real terms, then?
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-ALAvDkry1k/SZ8VCxxC9II/AAAAAAAAAIw/JoVywSvlLJM/s8...
Currently 0.06
Or if you prefer, Brent is 0.07.
Both of which are below average on that chart.
So yeah, oil is up because of money printing. QED.
That chart only goes to 2009
why should it? Consumption falls with supply...gold is in supply decline as well.
oh no you dint...
anybody who was studying inventories reports through '07 knew what was happening
You are right, it is not rocket science. Gas is cheap. It is approx. 15 cents a gallon in US Mercury Dimes pre 1964 90%. It was 31 cents a gallon in the same currency back then.
THE DOLLAR IS BECOMING WORTH LESS IN OIL, COFFEE, etc.
It has nothing to do with your BS.
I wonder if oil producers are doing the same thing as consumer goods mfg? Are they using smaller barrells? Putting that little bulbous indent in the bottom of the barrell? adding waste cooking oil to top up the barrells of oil?
Wanna know what's scarier? Economies of scale in reverse...
Those oil wells and refineries run on volume. As demand drops they'll increasingly be squeezed (this has already happened to one big refiner in Europe). Plant and equipment maintenance budgets will get reduced to try and keep up profit margins. Well, you can see where this is heading... At some point it'll just become too expensive to operate this shit. The entire infrastructure was built to run on sub $30/bbl oil.
"Uhm, would the "unrestful" parts of the world be those that have an above average US drone presence. At least we know that said price surges have nothing to do with the following chart:"
Why I love ZH in one short paragraph.
What is an "average" drone presence? How can I tell what my drone presence is and when should I consider seeing a doctor or switching chief executives?
Saw Cramer on the Today show or some other piece of consumer disinformation - I think I heard him blame gas prices on Iranian nuclear ambitions.
Nice GS spin.
the banks want war.
That White House has a solution for EVERYTHING! Thanks, Carney, I'll think of you next time I have a $100 fill-up.
$58 to fill up my VW TDI that gest 42 MPG (2004 model). Sucks to spend that much, obviously it affects my discreionary spending. Yeah, I still get 42 MPG's on a 6 yr old car, and it ha over 150k miles on it. Suck on that Volt, you piece of shit. Flaming piece of shit at that.
48MPG on a 98 TDI and I'm told if I chip it I could squeeze 50+
and what are these new hybrids achieving again ?
I get 52mpg out of my 96 Geo metro the most economical car ever sold in America.
96 Geo Metro is birth control my friend. You definately not getting any ass in that POS
I don't think he cares.....
And you are welcome to any woman that would spread her legs because of a car...
You can get over 50 MPG. Just don't buy the new "clean" diesel, it's junk and an oil change will cost you $500-$800.
I want to personally thank you guys for conserving in your little POS econoboxes so I can burn your share of gasoline in my Phaeton
Is that the horse carriage or the car? :)
Dude, if you're gonna rub the regret of a spartan life in someone's face, at least pick a manlier car than a fucking Phaeton.
Might as well say Gaeyton jesus.
Around my way there is no other option just low sulfur diesel at the pump. Unless you mean heating/off trail fuel ?
With older diesel engines that were not designed around clean diesel, i.e. not direct injection, you can use furnace / heating oil and get better fuel economy, not to mention the cost savings of using less expensive fuel. You can also look into converting the vegatable oil from MacDonald's to use as a fuel source.
Michael Moore not going on a diet will single handedly ensure plenty of used veggie oil for the entire country to burn in autos.
You can squeeze another 10mpg if you don't run engine above 2000rpm.
get 50 PSI tires for even better fuel economy. Put it in nuetral and roll down hills. Throw away the air conditioner. If you really go all out, you can get over 60 MPG http://www.jimellisgreen.com/green-resources/hypermiling.htm
I squeeze an extra 1 mpg in my range rover sport by bringing my mountain bike to ride the trails.
I got some nice flame decals for mine so I could have at least fake flames since there are no real ones...and solar charged I get infinite MPG on my errand loop to the next town over and back. Merely about the same as your 42 mpg on gasoline-only. IF I feel like burning some, for grins...Suck on that. Sour grapes much? So what if I made the money for it shorting GM? You could've too.
At least they didn't try to blame rising gas on weather...yet. As for rising food, well, that will surely be blamed on the weather.

Yes, also "unrealistic" to expect no social unrest.
SNAP cards for the poor. Not so much for those of us with jobs and familys. More discretionary spending gone... GDP goin down.
The poor get their SNAP cards as long as the world fiat ponzi is perpetuated. There are going to be many angry hungry people when the US no longer can print to spend on entitlements (social security / medicare / medicaid). The collapse of the dollar is what will really push granny in a wheel chair over the cliff.
But it doesn't end there. All government workers will get crushed and everyone depending on a future payment in dollars will be sorely disappointed as those dollars will no longer be able to buy anything. Plus, the service sector, which is the main sector in the US economy and dependent on the exporting of US dollars will go bye bye when the dollar goes bye bye.
Good bye shopping, good bye restaurants, good bye housing, good bye entertainment, hello cheap labor, hello manufacturing, hello farming.

"Uhm, would the "unrestful" parts of the world be those that have an above average US drone presence.[sic]"
sounds like a good bet to me
Would the 'unrest' be caused by Israel's threats to bomb Iran, and the cheers of its U.S. amen corner?
Close down AIPAC, save a dollar a gallon for life! ;-)
The banksters have so much power at this point it just makes sense that they should depopulate the world while they have the chance. Starvation Bitchez!
Fucking idiots.
Growth?
Is that why the IEA has cut forecasts again (2nd time in 6 months - last time that happened was in winter/spring of 2008. nobody paid attention then either).
Geopoltical.....Oil is fungiable. Iran can't sell it to EU, they can sell it to China. And China can get it cheap bc Iran can't sell it to EU.
SO what else is going......1) refining issues in US. Although motor gasoline consumption is at 10 year lows, and some evidence that certain US companies are exporting their "excess gasoling" (cough mexico importing).
And my favorite reason......Same as last year when we hit highs....CRUDE AS AN ASSET CLASS.
From Reuters:
By close of business on February 14, hedge funds and other
money managers were running 7.3 long futures and options
positions linked U.S. crude prices (308 million barrels) for every
short position (42 million barrels), according to commitments of
traders data published by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading
Commission (CFTC).
Investors have not been this long of U.S. crude futures and options
since July 2011.
Money managers
now have long positions amounting to 300 million barrels,
up from 250-280 million through last autumn, in a long/short
ratio of 7.3:1 compared with a more normal ratio of 3:1 or less.
For reference, in 2002, long postions for HF's and MM's in futs and options positions linked to US crude prices peaked at 30 million barrels.
Banks continue to fight CFTC position limits and their implementation in court.
Hedge Funds shouldn't even be able to play in that market space. It doesn't exist for them to make dollars and they simply run up the price of the very things that society NEEDS. Physical delivery should be required.
Hedge Funds aren't the problem.
It's the FED
On a broader scale true, but commodities shouldn't be for speculation. They exist to maintain some equilibruim throughout growing seasons.
You can lose a lot of money speculating the wrong way. If we had deflation the price would be going down regardless of hedge funds but we don't b/c the Fed printed money and now gas is high.
Kind of why I find it interesting that people should blame "speculation" when EVERYTHING is based on speculation!
Yes, sure, big positions can make the boat really rock, but perhaps we need that to happen so that we can start to look for alternatives to this oil-paradigm. Eventually there won't be anything we can do about high costs (read "high un-affordability") because of scarcity. Stepping in and throttling speculators just means that we push the big crunch out further, all the while telling us our problems are ONLY because of speculation.
It's all about hedging... nothing in this world is guaranteed.
Liz, oil's price is up something like 6X since year 2000. Oil producers, who one would think would want to capture that revenue by producing more, have barely budged production over this past decade.
Why aren't they collecting all that extra money by pumping more?
Answer: because they can't.
Geology trumps economics. That's just the way it is.
Lizzy - Spot on not to mention that the CME has reduced oil contract initial & maintenance margins by 18.8%; Once in December 2011-8.8% reduction; February 2012 -10%...I wonder if the O'Slappy increased margin rates would curb the enthusiasm
4 Days of oil is considered massive speculative hoarding, sufficient to drive up prices? That's about what 300 million barrels is worth, 4 days global consumption.
If stockpiling 4 days of supply is enough to ramp prices, things are pretty tight. Otherwise, blaming speculators is such nonsense when it is such a small volume when looking at the bigger picture.
Actual stockpiling of physical oil also costs a bit of money, and requires the future prices to be higher than spot, unless truly speculating that the price in the future will spike well above the current futures prices.
Thanks for providing meaningful metrics. I'm just not buying the "the speculators did it" excuse...
That says it alll...
The sheeple have no idea what's coming. Imagine what the price will be once we lose the petro dollar status completely (it has already begun to happen).
James Kuntsler....."The Long Emergency"....been preachin' it since 2005.
http://www.kunstler.com/index.php
had that discussion with a friend last week. his eyes glazed over, no idea what's coming
Between inflation in general, loss of the huge petro dollar price benefit, and a pending world war, everyone with a long commute is basically screwed. That's truth without even considering the peak production / reserve arguments.
Tele-working is going to be increasing exponentially.
I predict a lot of people will be working at home... in their own gardens.
would that be in foreclosed homes since they no longer have a job? Will future generations be crap-sharers for the banksters?
It's not PRICE, it's COST. It's AFFORDABILITY. Again, I was engaged in these debates a good 10 years ago; I found that most were trying to predict prices so that they could profit. I warned way back then that if people pushed up the wagers on PRICES that TPTB would slice out jobs, thereby cutting demand and lowering PRICES (and wipe out the silly small players). If PRICES were low TPTB would take the other side and ramp up jobs (and whipe out the silly small players). This has mostly been the case up until now, but their control/ability is waning, as they'd forgotten that Mother Nature was also at the table...
Well, you know what that means ? That means this time the people who push the oil price up are friends of the white house. White house won't do jack about this round of oil price pump. Last week, someone on bloomberg radio said the bankers are buying up the oil even demand is dropping. Since it is the bankers, white house said nothing.
MBS, bonds and equities crashed, over leveraged banks and funds needed a bailout. The smart ones used the newly printed Fed FRNs to go long crude so you're right they can't let it fall too much. Not without the connected the banks and funds getting a little heads up first before the reserves are released ahead of the election.
TARP and stimulus have acheived commodity rallies that further hinder economies. Idiots, complete idiots.
don't say peak oil bitchez!!!
peak oil bitchez !
damn u beat me to it
We have a lovely runner up prize of a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni
blame satan /Santorium
Well if environmental wackos would let us drill for our own oil rather than cutting off our legs because of a snaildart or a dessert lizard or mossfoam or because we must keep ANWAR the beautiful and pristine arctic wasteland that it is. We have a president who cuts off our own gulf oil supply to only give billions to brazil so we can be their best customers. Go look who gives funding to the Sierra Club. Biiiiiiiiiiiiigg Oiiiiiiiiillllllllll. They only attack the ones who vote republican or against unions. Why else do you thinks they are silent when illegal aliens grow a giant pot farm in the los padres national forest but will sue the crap out of timber companies for clearing old dying trees that will help give birth to a new more vibrant forest and ecosystem. Or do they not care about the environment?
The White House is going to make a huge deal about gas prices over the spring and then just before July 4th Obama is going to ride to the rescue and release reserves, the Saudi's will increase exports, the banks will short the piss out if it and gas which by July 4th will be 5.50/gallon will fall to just under 5.00. At this point the mainstream press will make a great deal about how awesome Obammy is.
Mark it down, put it in the book.
It's in the book
And it won't make a bit of fucking difference because by then it will be recognized that we're in a recession/depression so that little trick won't make a bit of difference. Obama is done, only to be replaced by another corrupt politician with an (R), and that also won't make a bit of fucking difference.
Goldman sucks has backed Rommney so guess who the next prez is.
Don't count out jeb bush at a convention.
I'm not so sure WonderDawg, I think Obama serves TPTB very well.
No, he's going to sell out the "left" (for the umpteenth time [you right-wing morons ever going to figure this out?]) and capitulate to the big oil folks. After all, the big oil folks HAVE to do business with his primary sponsors (banksters). The oil folks will be happy and they and the bankers will hold hands and instruct their media minions to hire, er, a, vote, er, a... say nice things about the Puppet in Chief.
Lie, steal, cheat, foreclose, bomb, repeat.
Why is the White House commenting on this? Everyone says there is no inflation, so if there is no inflation, this shouldn't be a story right?
maybe BB's on the bat phone to oblamo telling him if he dosn't release some oil reserves to JPM/GS he's going to crash the equity markets and ruin his re-election pipe dreams.
Don't forget peak oil as I was thumbing through a copy of 'twilight in the desert'. I'm a slow starter, pub. in 05.
Matt Simmons ( Rip) was way ahead of his time.
Twilight in the Desert is featured prominately on my bookshelf. RIP indeed.
2011 milage. Least since 2003.. Amazing . Even less than 2008. Why in the hell did we need all those new cars in 2001 then?

Is this the demand you speak so highly of?
Bullpucky !!
So they last through the depression?
I remember one of the car mags did an article back in 2003 comparing the average gas mileage to that of 1973...it was the same. All we had done was switch from driving Impalas and Galaxies to driving pickups and SUVs.
as i drank my 1 0z bottle of pepsi today i could only marvel that the price had not increased in many years, what inflation?
same thoughts as i ate my 9 oz Pound cake.
Troy oz conversion.......it's the in thing.
with your 14 oz "pint" of ice cream?
Barilla pasta.. 10 boxes for $10. My wife said i turned into a fat fuck, But who cares? 10 for 10
Examples like that are all over. Hell, even bananas have had a funny change. At our local Harris Teeter, the bananas now have an extra 2-3" of stem attached to the top. Funny, huh? I'm sure that was by coincidence! Grapes now cost $10 dollars. Gala apples there are $2.79 a pound. Bags of chips are getting noticably smaller too. It makes you wonder how much drooling the masses must be doing to not notice what's going on around them.
Higher fuel costs will mean much higher food prices too of course.
No shit. I picked the wrong time to realize how unhealthy regular supermarket food is, and start shopping Whole Foods and farmers markets. Fuck me, eating healty food is expensive.
You get 6 items for $80.00 at whole foods , stay away from the one on Lincon Blvd its very expensive
where tne fuck is lincon blvd
If you think that's funny, wait until you realize that all that designer shit you buy at the grocer is simply packaged and branded differently at the same god damn plant that Aldi gets all their shit from.
Unless you're producing the food yourself on a farm, that is certainly true. It is insanely expensive to eat well.
yeah, but how expensive is cancer treatment?
I'll go with the extra food costs.
Creeping cost increases are one thing. A proper supply interruption will leave most UK, supermarket dependant households hungry in 72 hours. Probably the same in the US.
A prolonged interruption means idle farm machinery and widespread famine. No idea if it will happen but seems insane at this point not to be prepared. 7 billion on the planet now, my thinking is that we see 5 billion again before 8 billion.
Yep, if you track packaged goods you'll find the net weight of product in the package has dropped 10-30% in many many cases, while the price stays the same. Dumbass consumer says what inflation? The price is the same!
Look at the bottom of glass and plastic containers and you'll see that bubble getting bigger and bigger that displaces product.
Hows that HFCS working out for you , soon pepsi will give a free insulin shot with them.
while eating from the 9.5 oz chips bag (-9.5%) inbetween blowing your nose using some of the 184 tissue box (-8%)
Peak Net Energy...
Bitchez...
There ya go !
It's all about finding your niche. ; )
Short Earth.
Why don't they just admit that gas prices haven't gone up enough for the administrations agenda?
I am pretty sure his plan called for "energy prices to skyrocket"...which is what he said he wanted...
So he is happy with the news...
Which underscores the stupidity, once again in making it impossible for any pipelines from Canada. Thanks much Mr. Obama. You've really risen above Bush, the whole world loves us now as you promised, you've really turned the corner on Iran, and those negotiations with North Korea and the dialing down of the Patriot Act and the GITMO situation and the unfettered use of a credit card backed by China you referred to as unpatriotic when you were a Senator. Damned you've done one helluva job on all the hope and change. Oh and good job on getting those damned lobbyist out of Washington and dialing down the political rancor. Gee Mr. Obama really, Really... You sure made it sound so easy when you campaigned. Unbelieveable that you could succeed in one thing, actually making Bush seem less incompetent than I thought he was. Did he leave behind his playbook and notes and you just got them mixed up and mistaken them for your own?
Could you explain how a pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast will reduce the price of oil?
Pay attention to the fact that the oil making it to the GoM will trade as Brent, which last time I looked was ~16 bucks more a barrrel....
I'm going to go with that the majority of refineries are on the gulf coast, so a pipeline would make burning fossil fuel to transport the crude down there unnecessary.
Brent has to do with specific density, yes? So the higher priced stuff has a greater percentage by volume of the most desired distillates?
Brent is lower quality oil (marginally) than WTI... WTI contracts can be satisfied with Brent with a make whole payment (not that anyone would)....
WTI is at a discount because there is a modest glut of landlocked oil in NA... The Bakken (as a rule, high quality oil) and Tar sands (WCS is fairly shitty and trades at a huge discount) are responsible...
"so a pipeline would make burning fossil fuel to transport the crude down there unnecessary."
Of course, if we just ignore all the energy associated with pipeline constuction and maintenance (accidents etc.), then, yes, we'll consume LESS energy delivering this stuff!
Amazing how well people are conditioned to follow the big business paradigm of externalizing costs to make profits/statistics appear favorable.
And meantime Canada turns into an environmental toilet bowl.
For arguments sake, what's the gph flow rate of an 18" pipe at 50 psi? Compare that with how many 30k gallon tractor trailers, burning 9 mpg, to transfer the same amount.
you build once. Maintenance is small. With motor transport, you do forever. And maintain the roads. And the hazard of spill is considerably higher, because fucktards like you in your prius are constantly driving back and forth with their heads up their asses.
It's not a big business (and here's that fancy word that makes everyone in the meeting consider your heigthened intellect) paradigm, it's just plain common fucking sense.
Its moved by rail...
I think TBTF are executing the plan very successfully.i.e. enslaving American public.
With the exception of the pipeline thing, yeah, what you said!
Obama was a revised version. Just wait until THEY bring us iPOTUS version 45! Ain't technology grand?
UNREST IN SOME PARTS OF WORLD
Would that be caused by US/NATO bombs for peace, dictator assassination/ouster, al CIAeada, central banksters devaluing currencies and stuff like that?
THRRrrrwwwWWW !!!!!!! cough, cough.
Shit...there goes the coffee.
I appreciate William Bonzai's pics a great deal, but that looks more like Marcus Allen than Barry.
Laughed Coca-Cola through my nostrils; OH GOD IT BURNS!
See, you've pissed off the Pepsi gods!
Nice one!
If I am not mistaken, that background image was taken on Interstate 65 on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama.
He looks like a deflated buffoon, sorry i mean balloon.
...Rosemary's Baby musta sold his Saudi King Bling for some Fiat pay off for duh CamPAIgN float, which hyperinflated the price of gas. LMAO Banzaiiiii http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvWpUcj5rps
"...clearly the effect..."
What an arrogant pos.
An amazing piece of work and recommend it highly. Notice none in the MSM are talking about it now..since it's true! Mr. Simmons was clearly a genius in this "field" pun intended. As they are drying up all over the ME.
Evidently a "Comprehensive Energy Policy" does not include a pipeline from Canada?
Listen you dumb fucks, you wanna play Russian Roulette with running this pig through the most important region on the entire planet, the one that contains the Ogallala aquifer?
And when That oil supply dries up and your water is fucked up (Canada, you listening?), Then what?
Sorry you dumb fucks, it's the farmers that are winning this one (for a change). Yeah, and it's NOT a party thing (I'll assure you that the majority of these farmers aren't Dems).
http://www.truth-out.org/small-nebraska-town-prepares-contentious-keysto...
I'll stand by the farmers, thank you.
How many more people will $5 gas push out of the work force because they can't afford to drive to work anymore?
Let's see. 7.25 minimum wage.
40 hour week. Gross 290.00 65% for deductions. (All of them) Leaving you with a bit over 101 dollars.
5 dollars a gallon at 30 miles to gallon in my vehicle...
2 gallons a day. 10 dollars, 5 days a week working someplace within 30 miles radius. 50 dollars a week.
Starbucks 4 dollars a day, lunch 10 at subway.
DAMN! where is my food money?
Ah yes, bag of cat food. Bleah. Might be cheaper and more food content in a good stiff beer.
And my productivity will decline with my health.
6 inch cheapo sub at subway ~$3, save yourself $7 per day, $35 per week. You can get rice around $1 per pound, and chicken legs around $1 or $2 per pound, same for the big rounds of precooked ham at Wal-Mart. The rice is 1 part rice to 2 parts water, so a 20 pound bag lasts quite a while. frozen vegatables are pretty cheap too, and vitamins are recommended.
Consider replacing the Starbucks with homemade coffee in a thermos for $1 per day, saving another $15 per week. That money can be used for beer.
It cost me $1000 a month more than I earn to get to work and back after all is said and done. If I were to sell my car and stay home, I could use the grand I'm saving each month to pay off my mortgage early and then I could retire off the $50 a month I'll get from social security. Face it folks, we're pretty much fucked
Hm... the "average" human has been able to drive to work for, well, hm... A very small fraction of the globe's population has been driving automobiles to work for perhaps 70 years out of a total, what, several thousand years?
It's ALL unsustainable!
Shit, I was arguing with idiots who were pushing for the construction of a new transit station to provide light rail transport. All giddy with the prospects to be able to commute to a nearby city, never realizing that it would be better to take such money and create jobs locally so they didn't have to commute! Subsidizing the Big business in the Big city... And now those Big businesses are cutting jobs. The more malleable bus services are being cut. Go for glitter over substance...
Chalky Soetero knows what is best for you; and that's higher gas prices because you drive too much and you don't drive a Chalky Soetero "approved" car. Why bitch about higher gas prices? You dolts that voted for this asshat are getting exactly what he said he wants; i.e. higher gas prices. What's wrong with $6 gas in L.A.?
