Poverty In America: A Special Report

Solutions, anyone?

America is getting poorer. The U.S. government has just released a bunch of new statistics about poverty in America, and once again this year the news is not good.  According to a special report from the U.S. Census Bureau, 46.2 million Americans are now living in poverty.  The number of those living in poverty in America has grown by 2.6 million in just the last 12 months, and that is the largest increase that we have ever seen since the U.S. government began calculating poverty figures back in 1959.

Not only that, median household income has also fallen once again.  In case you are keeping track, that makes three years in a row.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, median household income in the United States dropped 2.3% in 2010 after accounting for inflation.  Overall, median household income in the United States has declined by a total of 6.8% once you account for inflation since December 2007.  So should we be excited that our incomes are going down and that a record number of Americans slipped into poverty last year?  Should we be thrilled that the economic pie is shrinking and that our debt levels are exploding?  All of those that claimed that the U.S. economy was recovering and that everything was going to be just fine have some explaining to do.

Back in the year 2000, 11.3% of all Americans were living in poverty.  Today, 15.1% of all Americans are living in poverty.  The last time the poverty level was this high was back in 1993.

However, it is important to keep in mind that the government definition of poverty rises based on the rate of inflation.  If inflation was still calculated the way that it was 30 or 40 years ago, the poverty line would be much, much higher and millions more Americans would be considered to be living in poverty.

So why is poverty in America exploding?  Who is getting hurt the most?  How is America being changed by this?  What is the future going to look like if we remain on the current path?

Let's take a closer look at poverty in America....

The Shrinking Number Of Jobs

Unemployment is rampant and the number of good jobs continues to shrink.  Once upon a time in America, if you really wanted a job you could go out and get one.  Today, competition for even the lowest paying jobs has become absolutely brutal.  There simply are not enough chairs at the "economic table", and not being able to get a good job is pushing large numbers of Americans into poverty.....

*There are fewer payroll jobs in the United States today than there were back in 2000 even though we have added 30 million people to the population since then.

*Back in 1969, 95 percent of all men between the ages of 25 and 54 had a job.  In July, only 81.2 percent of men in that age group had a job.

*If you gathered together all of the unemployed people in the United States, they would constitute the 68th largest country in the world.

*According to John Williams of shadowstats.com, if you factored in all of the short-term discouraged workers, all of the long-term discouraged workers and all of those working part-time because they cannot find full-time employment, the real unemployment rate right now would be approximately 23 percent.

*If you have been unemployed for at least one year, there is a 91 percent chance that you will not find a new job within the next month.

The Working Poor

The number of low income jobs is rising while the number of high income jobs is falling.  This has created a situation where the number of "the working poor" in America is absolutely skyrocketing.  Millions of Americans are working as hard as they can and yet they still cannot afford to lead a middle class lifestyle.

*Since the year 2000, we have lost approximately 10% of our middle class jobs.  In the year 2000 there were about 72 million middle class jobs in the United States but today there are only about 65 million middle class jobs.

*Back in 1980, less than 30% of all jobs in the United States were low income jobs.  Today, more than 40% of all jobs in the United States are low income jobs.

*Between 1969 and 2009, the median wages earned by American men between the ages of 30 and 50 dropped by 27 percent after you account for inflation.

*According to a report released in February from the National Employment Law Project, higher wage industries are accounting for 40 percent of the job losses in America but only 14 percent of the job growth.  Lower wage industries are accounting for just 23 percent of the job losses but 49 percent of the job growth.

*Half of all American workers now earn $505 or less per week.

*Last year, 19.7% of all U.S. working adults had jobs that would not have been enough to push a family of four over the poverty line even if they had worked full-time hours for the entire year.

*The number of Americans that are going to food pantries and soup kitchens has increased by 46% since 2006.

Unprecedented Dependence On The Government

Because they cannot get good jobs that will enable them to support themselves and their families, millions of Americans that used to be hard working contributors to society are now dependent on government handouts.  Nearly every single measure of government dependence is at a record high, and there are no signs that things are going to turn around any time soon.

*One out of every six Americans is now enrolled in at least one government anti-poverty program.

*Nearly 10 million Americans now receive unemployment benefits.  That number is almost four times larger than it was back in 2007.

*More than 45 million Americans are now on food stamps.  The number of Americans on food stamps has increased 74% since 2007.

*Approximately one-third of the entire population of Alabama is now on food stamps.

*More than 50 million Americans are now on Medicaid.

*Back in 1965, only one out of every 50 Americans was on Medicaid.  Today, approximately one out of every 6 Americans is on Medicaid.

*In 1980, just 11.7% of all personal income came from government transfer payments.  Today, 18.4% of all personal income comes from government transfer payments.

The Suffocating Cost Of Health Care

Millions of American families are being financially crippled by health care costs.  The U.S. health care system is deeply, deeply broken and Obamacare is going to make things even worse.  Health care is one of the top reasons why American families get pushed into poverty.  Most of us are just one major illness or disease from becoming financially wrecked.  Just ask anyone that has gone through it.  The health insurance companies do not care about you and they will try to wiggle out of their obligations at the time when you need them the most.  If you talk to people that have been through bankruptcy, most of them will tell you that medical bills were at least partially responsible.

*In America today, there are 49.9 million Americans that do not have any health insurance.  One single medical bill could easily wipe out the finances of most of those people.

*Only 56 percent of Americans are currently covered by employer-provided health insurance.

*According to a report published in The American Journal of Medicine, medical bills are a major factor in more than 60 percent of the personal bankruptcies in the United States.  Of those bankruptcies that were caused by medical bills, approximately 75 percent of them involved individuals that actually did have health insurance.

*According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, health care costs accounted for just 9.5% of all personal consumption back in 1980.  Today they account for approximately 16.3%.

More Children Living In Poverty

The United States has a child poverty rate that is more than twice as high as many European nations.  We like to think that we have "the greatest economy on earth", but the reality is that we have one of the highest child poverty rates and it increased once again last year.

*The poverty rate for children living in the United States increased to 22% in 2010.  That means that tonight more than one out of every five U.S. children is living in poverty.

*The poverty rate for U.S. adults is only 13.7%.

*Households that are led by a single mother have a 31.6% poverty rate.

*Today, one out of every four American children is on food stamps.

*It is being projected that approximately 50 percent of all U.S. children will be on food stamps at some point in their lives before they reach the age of 18.

*There are 314 counties in the United States where at least 30% of the children are facing food insecurity.

*More than 20 million U.S. children rely on school meal programs to keep from going hungry.

*It is estimated that up to half a million children may currently be homeless in the United States.

The Plight Of The Elderly

The elderly are also falling into poverty in staggering numbers.  They may not be out protesting in the streets, but that does not mean that they are not deeply, deeply suffering.

*One out of every six elderly Americans now lives below the federal poverty line.

*Between 1991 and 2007 the number of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 that filed for bankruptcy rose by a staggering 178 percent.

*The Baby Boomers have only just begun to retire, and already our social programs for seniors are starting to fall apart.  In 1950, each retiree's Social Security benefit was paid for by 16 U.S. workers.  According to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are now only 1.75 full-time private sector workers for each person that is receiving Social Security benefits in the United States.

Squeezed By Inflation

Rising inflation is squeezing the budgets of average American families like never before.  Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke claims that inflation is still low, but either he is delusional or he has not been to a supermarket lately.

Personally, I do a lot of grocery shopping at a number of different stores, and without a doubt prices are absolutely soaring.  Many of the new "sale prices" are exactly what the old "regular prices" were just a few weeks ago.

Some companies have tried to hide these price increases by shrinking package sizes.  But there is no hiding the pain on the old wallet once you fill up your cart with what you need to feed your family.

*Over the past year, the global price of food has risen by 37 percent and this has pushed approximately 44 million more people around the world into poverty.

*U.S. consumers will spend approximately $491 billion on gas this year.  That is going to be a brand new all-time record.

*Right now, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States is$3.649.  That is 94 cents higher than 12 months earlier and it is a brand new record for this time of the year.

A Smaller Share Of The Pie

The size of the "economic pie" in America is shrinking, and the share of the pie for those that are poor is shrinking a lot faster than the share of the pie for those that are wealthy.

*According to the Washington Post, the average yearly income of the bottom 90 percent of all U.S. income earners is now just $31,244.

*When you look at the ratio of employee compensation to GDP, it is now the lowest that is has been in about 50 years.

*At this point, the poorest 50% of all Americans now control just 2.5% of all of the wealth in this country.

*Big corporations are even recognizing the change that is happening to America. Just consider the following example from a recent article in the Huffington Post....

Manufacturers like Procter & Gamble, the household-goods giant responsible for everything from Charmin and Old Spice to Tide, are concentrating their efforts on luxury and bargain items, putting less emphasis on products aimed at the middle class, the Wall Street Journal reports.

America is fundamentally changing. We were a nation that had the largest middle class in the history of the globe, but now we are becoming a nation that is deeply divided between the haves and the have nots.

Perhaps you are still doing fine.  But don't think that economic disaster cannot strike you.  Every single day, thousands more Americans will lose their jobs or will discover a major health problem.  Every single day, thousands more Americans will lose their homes or will be forced to take a pay cut.

If you still have a warm, comfortable home to sleep in, you should be thankful.  Poverty is a very sneaky enemy and it can strike at any time.  If you are not careful, you might be the next American to end up sleeping in your car or living in a tent city.

It is easy to disregard a couple of statistics, but can you really ignore the vast amount of evidence presented above?

It is undeniable that America is getting poorer. Poverty is spreading and hopelessness and despair are rising.  There is a reason why the economy is the number one political issue right now. Millions upon millions of Americans are in deep pain and they want some solutions.

Unfortunately, it appears quite unlikely that either major political party is going to offer any real solutions any time soon.  So things are going to keep getting worse and worse and worse.

Should we just keep doing the same things that we have been doing over and over and over and yet keep expecting different results?

What we are doing right now is not working.  We are in the midst of a long-term economic decline.  Both major political parties have been fundamentally wrong about the economy.  It is time to admit that.

If we continue on this path, poverty in America is going to continue to get a lot worse.  Millions of families will be torn apart and millions of lives will be destroyed.

America please wake up.

Time is running out.

welcome to http://www.perfume100shop.com/ Miss Dior pefume (2012) is also created for an elegant and spirited young woman, as its composition glides from the sharp charm of fresh, fruity, citrusy notes of Italian mandarin at the top notes, highlighted by the blossoming floral notes of jasmine, then on to the noble elegance of Indonesian patchouli, before finally concluding with musk as the last trace of memory. With all the change of Miss Dior Chérie to Miss Dior, the house is now launching more lines under Miss Dior name, but things to be noted here that most lines below are based on the new interpretation of Dior Chérie EDP (2011) and Miss Dior Chérie EDP Couture Edition, so don’t get confused with the original sweet strawberry notes of Miss Dior Chérie (2005). The new lines include : Miss Dior Extrait de Parfum (2012) is the sensual quintessence of Miss Dior EDP (2012) which comes as the intensive and concentrated perfume of the first edition. It’s available in 7.5 ml for ?75.25 Miss Dior EDT (2012) is still designed by the house perfumer Fran?ois Demachy, and it delivers such a refreshing spring smell of a blossoming garden with the same Couture style from the original Miss Dior 1947, but in more modern way. The fragrance features a chypre accord, which then brightened with a springtime spirit of floral accents. It begins with variety of fresh, energizing tones of sweet orange essence at the top notes, highlighted by the floral fragrance of neroli and bergamot at the heart, then finally ended by the elegant smell of Indonesian patchouli. A key element of the perfumer’s palette, its essence is obtained by steam distilling the dried leaves. It is used in chypre, woody and oriental fragrances.

welcome to http://www.perfume100shop.com/ Miss Dior Eau Fraiche (2012) is described as elegant and bold as it is feminine and sensual, is a veil of freshness dressed in notes of green chypre blended with floral fragrance. This Eau Fra?che creates a new clime, in which lightness and elegance come together, deep and sensual, while being coquettish and invigorating scent of sunny spring. The fragrance opens with a fresh and fruity accent of sparkling citrus notes and green galbanum at the top, followed by delicate floral scent of jasmine, lying on the intensive base of earthy patchouli. Not to mention, it is also used in chypre, woody and oriental fragrances. So, no more confusion and forget all Miss Dior Chérie lines before 2011, because within five years to come, I think those products will no longer available (I don’t know about Miss Dior perfume . Basically the brand just wants to make the entire lines simple and easy to distinguish by releasing the whole new collection with “new” brand. They have 3 lines of Miss Dior Originale, 1 line of Miss Dior Chérie, and more lines of Miss Dior started from EDP, EDT, extract, and other distinctive lines. I hope later on they stick to it and won’t releasing another confusing line … I would like to share to you about this set of couture scents from Dior called La Collection Privée, which meant to evoke the beauty of his Couture dresses emerging from the bottle one by one. Mitzah was named after Mitzah Bricard, who was an emblematic figure who was very close to the Couturier from the earliest days of the Dior perfume. His muse first and foremost, she was also his ally and ambassador. Intrigued by this extraordinary woman, Demachy concocted a fragrance in her honour. “I wanted to pay tribute to her intense, feline femininity using amber and spicy notes, but also to her spiritual side, by including lots of Incense”, he explains. “The result is a very sensual, mysterious oriental."

A little confusion appears since we know that Miss Dior EDP (2012) is the new interpretation of Miss Dior Chérie EDP (2011), which is also the interpretation of Miss Dior Chérie (2005). On the other hand, we also found that Miss Dior perfume was released using basic components of Miss Dior Chérie (2005) that won’t be produced anymore.

This can be concluded that Miss Dior EDP (2012) and Miss Dior Chérie EDP Couture Edition are basically the same that all are based on the reformulation of Miss Dior Chérie (2005), but with slightly different composition. Miss Dior EDP (2012) is citursier than Miss Dior Chérie EDP Couture Edition – because we have to remember that after 2011, Miss Dior Chérie EDP has citrusier and fresher smell than the sweet strawberry aroma of Miss Dior Chérie (2005). Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet (2012) is the fresh and tender new facet of Miss Dior Chérie EDP Couture Edition for today’s elegant young ladies. This delicate floral bouquet, composed of peony accords and subtle sparkling fruity notes, leaves a fresh and elegant signature, with a touch of irreverence. It begins with variety of fresh, energizing tones of sweet orange essence at the top notes, followed by delicate floral bouquet composed of peony accords at the heart, then finally ended by a cottony, slightly powdery smell of white musk. I haven’t got any information about its price tags and sizes, but I assume this perfume will come with approx. the same prices and sizes. As Dior said, “You can’t imagine how much know-how and precision it takes to create a fragrance. The creative process is so consuming, so demanding that I feel as much a Perfumer as a Couturier.” The difference in their development of the ten female and unisex fragrances of 'La Collection Privée' is that Francois Demachy, Dior's Perfume Creator, was allowed to indulge himself physically and synaesthetically in the factors and history that have built the House of Dior. This particular 'New Look 1947' has an interesting history behind it. "It's a New Look!" was uttered in 1947 by Carmel Snow, Editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, during Christian Dior’s first fashion show, and gave name to the style of the House which propelled the Couturier to fashion’s highest heights. “New Look 1947 is a bouquet of flowers with Tuberose at its centre,” Fran?ois Demachy explains. “I wanted to modernize this well-known flower through a unique approach, so that all of its facets would be expressed. The Perfume is extremely feminine, sensual and surprising, just like the New Look was in its day.” In three retrospective volumes presented in a collectible slipcase, Dior captures the most enduring images from each decade of the brand’s rich history. Immortalizing Dior’s fashion, jewelry, and fragrance collections, this addition to Assouline’s Mémoire series presents an objet as chic as its subject.” I would say that I have this tendency to become a perfume-enthusiast, one day, just when I have all the funds to support my obsession with footwear along with expensive scents. Anyway, I discovered this a couple days back, and I would do anything to get my hands on it as soon as I can. April 23, 2012 by Victoria Dior perfume, Jewelry and Perfume 3 Volume Book : New Assouline Release I love beautifully illustrated books from the publisher Assouline, so I am looking forward to their three volume series on Christian Dior. “The pinnacle of French haute couture and savoir faire, the house of Dior is one of the world’s most celebrated luxury brands. Christian Dior envisioned a world of sophistication and elegance, a complete expression of the French tradition of high culture, artistry, and meticulous workmanship. Dior Perfume volume includes the perfumes and their ad campaigns. Dior had a stellar nail polish year last year and it seems like they have no intention of slowing down. So far 2012 has been non-stop polish heaven coming from the labs of Dior. From the campaign images, you can sense that this collection is très sophistiqué – very sophisticated with it’s trio of sultry purples. The three purples in this collection include Shadow, Orchid, and Poison. Shadow is a shimmery prune and looks similar to the hard to find oldie Licorice but it’s more muted and more blue-based rather than pink/red-based. Orchid is a bright red-toned plum. Poison is a deep blue-based purple which was made to match the bottle color of the iconic Dior fragrance by the same name. —(L - R): Shadow, Orchid, Poison Now onto swatches! I had no formula problems with any of these – all three were flawless and took two easy coats. Shadow: As you can see, the shimmer gives a glowing from within look and on the nail the shimmer is more subtle; it’s much more prominent in the bottle than on the nail. Orchid: This is a medium-toned purple and is sort of like a dark fuchsia. It’s a warm purple to my eye.
If you’ve been looking for something like Chanel‘s Rouge Noir except in purple, this could be it for you.

I thought I'd use my first post to give some of the traders and successful people who post here a little prospective from the other side of the economic ladder, since judging from the posts so far very few of you guys ever actually lived in real poverty. I'm 24 years old. I'm married and have two beautiful little girls ages 3 and 4. When my wife got pregnant I was working as a server at Cracker Barrel and going to school full time to become a history teacher. Since I had about an hour commute to school and was working close to full time to afford a small efficiency apartment, I wasn't able to devote as much time to school as I wanted and my grades started slipping. Within a year I had dropped out and picked up a better job working construction with my brother. My girlfriend was extremely sick throughout her entire pregnancy. She couldn't hold down hardly anything and she actually lost weight all the way until the third trimester. It was at that time that I applied for food stamps and TANF to help me since she wasn't working.

Let me first say that the entire system of receiving benefits is fucked up. To even receive any help with food stamps you must have poverty level wages. The bar is set just high enough where you have to be making close to no money to qualify but if you pick up an even slightly better job your benefits are slammed more than your wages have increased so it becomes pointless to try to get ahead. I have no clue how they determine what benefits you receive because it made no sense to me. For a family of four I received about $420 a month in food stamps but I had neighbors that lived next to me that had only one child and a similar job and they received almost $650. I would take that $420 and be able to buy food for the whole month. There was no steak and shrimp for me, we had to work hard and think ahead in order to make it last the whole month and sometimes we would have to dip in and actually pay for what we ate.

Food stamps were relatively easy to get started on but TANF wasn't as simple. First of all they made it impossible to even save money. You can't have more than $1000 in your bank account at any one time or your benefits are suspended. I mean I understand that I'm supposed to be poor and all but aren't you supposed to be saving all the money you can while you DO have some help so that you can better prepare yourself for AFTER you find a better job and don't qualify anymore. They make you take mandatory bullshit classes on how to write up your resume or handle yourself in an interview, instead of maybe helping you into a technical school or something like that where you would actually gain a skill to market. Unlike food stamps, I felt like the workers were actively trying to find ways to kick me out of the program. You had to turn in paperwork every month letting them know about what other jobs you had applied for and we had to talk to a worker every 6 months. At this time my wife had recovered from our second child and could've worked but once again it wouldn't have been in our best interest because after you figure in the $120 a week in child care minus the loss in benefits in food stamps and you can see that we really wouldn't be doing better with her working a minimum wage job. So we decided to stay on until our TANF benefits were up (you can only get them for two years and then you have to wait five) and I'm happy we made that decision. My daughters are both very intelligent and know they're well loved and I give Brittany being able to stay at home with them and care for them those first two years a lot of the credit.

When our TANF benefits ended Brittany found a job so now we're completely off the dole, but sometimes me or my wife has to eat very little so that our kids don't suffer and we can pay the bills. My wife also developed a thyroid condition after the pregnancy and had to have it removed and take medication, but now we don't even qualify for Medicaid anymore. The problem is that there ARE NO GOOD JOBS. Even if you work in a factory they hire through temp agencies now so you only make about $9 an hour and receive no benefits until your hired full time which can take years. So there you have it. Maybe I should've worked harder at school and I would've graduated by now. Maybe I should've been more careful and not had children so soon although I don't regret them being here for one moment. Life sometimes gets in the way. But I have learned in my short experience that you really don't need much in life to find happiness. As long as I have a roof over my head, food in my belly, and my family is healthy I'm generally happy. I don't need to buy stupid shit to entertain myself because nature is my television and my children are my playstation.

So for all of you stupid fucks who thinks that poor people don't work hard and just rely on handouts I'd say you're only half right. There are some out there that are stupid, worthless, slaves of the system but for every one of them there's somebody like me who's worked his whole life trying to take care of his family that sometimes needs a little help. Not everyone can have wealthy parents to support them when things go wrong. Its hard to succeed in this corrupt, fucked up, fascist, economy anyway. One good thing that I have done is for the past three years I've taken a large portion of my tax return and bought physical silver. When things this whole charade is over and our bullshit economy collapses, we'll see who has more sanity and happiness when everybody starts living at my level.

Alan Smithee's picture

If you can not pay for your children then why did you have them? Are you deoutly Catholic and therefore can not avail yourself of contraceptive tecchnology? Why a 2nd child? Did you imagine it would improve youe financial situation?

Yes the entire welfare  system is fucked up. Did you care before you went on the dole? I  too am working on being a history teacher and i expet to spend my entire life in material poverty. I also expect to work untilI die. THIS IS THE  NATURAL ORDER. Retirement is a myth perpetuated by lies about how generous our  pension plan is (that we chronically underfund not that YOU ever get to skip a payment)

Want to really fix things? We need to  stop incentivizing big business to export jobs. I do not claim to have a detailed plan but I do know that our foreign policy, our tax policy, our regulatory regime look almost taylor made to drive jobs away.

I'm not saying go back to mercantilism or protectionism but out rulers must recognize for one thing that we are in  a global competition. If we regulate every damn thing and put "green" regulations that are very expensive and don't do much good we are sabotaging ourselves-in short for liberals less regulation, lower barriers to entry, etc yall know the spiel.

For the right- we need corporate reform. We need to reexamine our relationship with the corporation. IT  IS NOT A PERSON AND HAS NO  RIGHT TO EXIST. We ALOW it to  exist to serve our purposes, economy of scale blah, blah. If a health insurance corp takes money and refuses  all first claims on the view that every one that isnt appealed is "moneysaved" then  we must revoke its charter and  auction its assets.

We the  right ought to be the masters of corporate america not its hatchet men. Also for the right end the wasteful and stupid "war on drugs"- the "war" CAUSES CRIME AND RAP MUSIC (IF quickie mart deals your drugs then there wont be gangsta culture for the kids!  Mass incarseration isn't working and never will- unless we take it to Stalinst levels.

For both right and left  - FUCK CHINA! We have 14 carrier groups and we underwrite global security. OUR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IS A NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE. If PRC spies steal data, technology and manufature ILLEGAL bootleg products we should punnish them. We must  demand that furiners respect our patents and copyrights and be prepared to kill over  it. In the 3rd Wave World War over informaton will be real. How about we  cut china off from the internet -OUR INTERNET, IT BELONGS TO US (for now and we should keep it that way).

nuff 4 now u get the picture

Der Kommissar's picture

I can vouch for that - some of the people I personally know are in this situation exactly. The system is fucked up beyond any hope.

" Most of us are just one major illness or disease from becoming financially wrecked."

Even Steve Jobs, for all his money, is on liver away from death.  So, this patter of fretting only shows that we all are mortal.  It does not in any way move us toward productive poverty policy that does not also erode or even destroy the ability of others to create wealth.

In the context of diagnosing of policy it would be far more helpful to recall that we are just one major government policy away from becoming finacially wrecked.

I'll fucking tell you what's wrong with poverty in america; it's GODDAM AMERICANS -- YOU, muthah fuckahs!!!

this country has become a nation of cocooned, sedintary, video-game/reality-program, lazy-boy ZOMBIES!!!

there is no sense of community.  everyone has been pidgeon-holed, pasturized, and partitioned.  we live in the most segmented society imaginable.  and it is atomized along the lines of the individual.  this is NOT what our forefathers intended by the 'rugged individual' idiom.  HELL NO!!

let me elaborate:

in the south, before air conditioning and lyndon johnson's well-intentioned 'great society', we were a genuine community.  even in my day, as a young boy, that warmth of culture and ubiquitious LOVE was the order of the day.  something happened around the time reagan came along.  something that, like the great society, seemed at first an unqualified good turned into a catastrophy (at least for those who love their neighbors, that is -- fascists, stop reading now; i'm a gonna make this HURT!!!).

First, the 'great society':

let me say that i do not indulge the 'conspiracy theories' surrounding johnson's intent to sink the black man by virtue of his charitable designs.  his culpability viz. JFK is another issue; but i do believe the man was sincere with respect to his compassion for the poor (it was a lifelong thing for johnson -- and he's one of the most interesting american politicans...quite a fascinating study).  nevertheless, the road to hell is paved with good intentions (to borrow a pharse).

just when the black man was starting to feel his oats (but, mind you, he was still in a tenuous situation; i don't want to paint an unrealistic picture here), along comes the great society.  now, here's the choice a black man faced:  i'm a new father, and i can 1) do like daddy did, grovel and scrape and cow and cravenly mope around hoping that i don't do something to incur the wrath of whitey; in a sometimes vain, but always impossibly difficult, attempt to simply feed this new child of mine that's on the way. OR 2) i can step aside (the black man can, believe it or not, do basic math) and let uncle sam fit the bill; seein how he's pitchin in more than i could to begin with.

Now, some may say, fine! all the better, why not just never 'marry' and then add the benefits of his labor and the munificence of uncle sam?  never works out that way.

i don't know how many of you have ever been married, but the nature of the arrangement is symbiotic: in other words, both in the union must NEED one another for it to work long-term.  divorce occurs early in marriage when that mutual need does not exist: in other words, if momma gets tired of daddy (and momma can also add) she can just give him the boot and worry not.  Marriages will never make it if they are not tested; and there is no test if there is no mutual 'need'.

the great society removed that mutual need of 'making it' because, to america's blacks, the quality of life afforded by the great society (as basic as it was and still 'is') was what they'd for generations hoped to attain.  moreover, they were well aware that america was NOT prepared to see them in a professional setting.

So, we've destroyed the black community through well-intentioned, but ultimately caustic methodologies; and we've removed our own role as communities in such charity by commuting the responsibility to uncle same.  done and done.  wash our hands.  go back to 'the apprentice' or whatev...

Now, the rest of the south and reagan:

my father, along with MANY MANY MANY others at that time (early eighties) were startin to really take off.  and, what better way to take off than to move.  so we all, as a class (uppper mids), migrated across the country (my family moved three times).  in the process of moving, the sense of community atrophied.  it wasn't just us, i could sense it all over.  i remember our first move: EVERY neighbor brought food, their whole family came, we stayed and vistited all night...it was a real HOOT!  and it went on and on, until, at last, we felt like we 'belonged'.  second move, not so much.  third move (almost identical community) nothing at all.

my point is: the moves and relocations became so frequent, and then the new members of the community would ultimately leave (making the welcome moot), and then you're left with a nebulous mass of folks...some recognizing some, others no clue.  but, in the end, the south has become a splintered looking glass.  segmented along 30 million fissures --each only waitin for the next installment of jersy shore or spongebob....each comfortable inside with the internet, cable and all the 'reality' programs and faux communites he could ever hope for.

and all of them fat, lazy and STUPID!!! all of them forming a world-veiw based on a series of images and distorted facts from fox news or msnbc -- you people DO NOT know poverty.  fuck off!  yeah, bump into them at fuckin walmart, you borguise clown, and make all the goddam conclusions you like.  just know that you're a moron.  you're wantonly ignorant.  and you seem pleased as plum about it.

SO, 'christians', get out and help the poor and fatherless....actually spend TIME with them; then tell me about all your high-minded fucking theories about the macro-economic impact of blah blah blah!  as St. James said, TRUE Christianity is helping the poor and the fatherless (and it doesn't say stop helping the fatherless after they are 18 -- the sting of a 'ghetto' father-figure and the void that remains is LIFELONG!!!, bitchez!).

i won't tell my own works of charity, as it's a tacky thing to do.  but, i will share a habit of my great grandfather (maternal side), and i mean GREAT:

he was a railroad man, yeah, i guess he was kinda high up -- but my family has had advantages -- and his name, no shit, was Heman.  and, bitchez, he was HeMan.  anyway, during the great depression, he got into the habit of housing and feeding hobos and derelicts in his home.  my mother spent most summers at thier home, and the stories she tells give you gooseflesh.  they kept scores of blankets, canned beans...everything you'd need to feed a raft of the helpless.  well, word of his charity got round, and soon, this lil town in arkansas became a hub of hobos.  did my great grandfather think he was being taken 'advantage' of?  hell no! he felt honored that God gave him the chance to help more and more.  yup, he was also one of those wicked freemasons....aaagh!  the devils!!!

these hobos, you see, had all grown up on farms.  they were TRICKED by the henry fords of the world to sell the freedom of those farms and come to the 'easy' life in the big city.  almost all of them shared the same sad story.  sold farm, moved to city, hired then fired, destitute.  oh, yes, keynseism is much more compassionate than the evil harshness of gold and silver...BAH!  rot in hell!

finally, ilene, i've got to get back to markets...sorry this took so long...but before i go, i'll leave you with the song my mother used to sing to us so often at night.  it's a song i still know by heart, and it makes me ache for 'home'.

my greatgrandfather would sing it to them all before he'd turn off the lights...

america was once AWESOME!!!

My advice if you have a job,do your best each day to try to make your employer money, or save the Co. money as this will ensure he will be able to continue to pay you. It is sad that so many people does not have a job, what is more sad is the number of jobless people that doesn’t want to work.
Next,I would advise everyone, if you don’t just have to have it DO NOT buy it, most of us could get by on less, and in fact later we are going to have to.

I am not actually convinced that HFCS is the cause as others have said.  I have not found a study showing it caused obesity in rat or human worse than sugar does.  MSG (also known by other names all of them essentially adding glutamate to processed food)  on the other hand does have studies that show BMI increases, increases in the speed of eating and with the amount of food eaten with MSG consumption.

All I really know for sure is when I got off all premade food and made my own food, copying the same foods I used to buy, I lost 18 pounds without trying.  And it wasn't just the weight loss that was noticeable.  I felt much less hungry.  If I make a cake or cookies now, I can eat a bit and be done.  They no longer call to me to eat them.  I used to be so very hungry.

Not everyone is equally affected, as is true with everything, so that is why you don't understand it Dingleberry.  Being easily addicted to the glutamate added to food is not your vice.  For me I don't get addicted to any of the drugs I took in my youth or to alcohol, but I do get quite addicted to nicotine and glutamate.  We are all unique.

The reason the poor have more obesity is probably because they tend to buy less fresh food, and more premade food.  Sometimes it is because they have no access to regular grocery stores in the bad neighborhoods, and sometimes it is because the premade food is cheaper.  Hotdogs are cheaper than steaks.  Orange soda is cheaper than orange juice.  I have found though that I can usually overall spend less on food by making all mine from scratch and eating less meat.

I think obesity is way up because they are putting a great deal of glutamate in the premade food, and it is addictive.

How can poor people afford all those tattoos??

Chuck Walla's picture

And cell phones and fancy nails and ear & tongue jewels, too?

HoofHearted's picture

I got behind a couple today that had a dozen tattoos apiece. The guy had a big green reflector in his ear. (I shit you not.) His concubine/wife/baby mama had a bar through her nose. These ass hats spent the time and the money to get all this shit done. And then, they used both food stamps and WIC vouchers to pay for $175 worth of groceries, plus the kid shoplifted a book. He was little, and the clerk said, "Ah, let him have it. I don't want to ring it up separately." Total bill out of their pocket was $7.11 for a six pack of beer or something.

I'm beginning to think that I have the word "SUCKER" written across my forehead. I think I've gottn behind half of the 47 million food stamp recipients at the grocery store at one time or another.

And the pirce of food is absofuckinglutely soaring. Thank you, Bennie and the Inkjets. And QE3 or some other euphemism for "Bend over, American taxpayer" is likely coming on Wednesday. Is it any wonder Ron Paul won the CA straw poll?

There are no jobs, idiot! Yes, there are some asses who cheat the system, as always, but these are all irrelevant anectodes, which I can tell you a couple as well.

Until this damn outsourcing stops, this thing will go on and on. There is no other way - either finally USG imposes tariffs on Chinese imports and Indian services or 100m Americans will be on food stamps.

Great look at what's coming. You make some huge generalizations. Don't you think its quite possible that the huge increase in people using state aid has something more to it than suddenly ALL those millions of people one day deciding they would rather go on welfare than continue working? Most of the people who caused this massive increase have worked all their lives and have never received welfare. Maybe it seems to you all food stamp recipients waste their money on tattoos and beer but I think maybe you need to reevaluate how you come to your conclusion because maybe you missed it but the world and our country are totally different than they were even 5 years ago. People who never imagined they would ever even apply for welfare now depend on it to feed their families. And worse still it seems less and less likely that we will ever be able to achieve the successes we once had because there are not many jobs that would get us out of poverty anymore. There has been a seismic shift in our country, ignore it at your own peril. If you continue to spout off about how ALL welfare recipients are tatooed losers.... You are as guilty of perpetuating this class warfare as Mr. Hopium. Wake up.... because until you do... you're just one more person standing in the way of us getting this country headed in the right direction.

As we all have.       The people who have been indoctrinated into the system of FOREVER , the false state of notion that certain things are true which are not true at all......the magic food card.....will always be recharged.....and is forever.

We have a class of people who have been programmed to a state of complete ignorance of true reality, built upon impressions that are totally false and it is getting worse by the day. Most use the practice of denial as a means of liberation within themsleves as the state feeds this faculty of never-ending food funds. I have witnessed what we could call the next form of cash forward me from their card at a walmart (yea I know) where a several dollar purchase returned $120 cash back. There doesnt seem to be any reverse on this vehicles transmission as the wheels are literally being driven off the system.

The destruction of the middle class in this county is ongoing.
It will be completed in due time, but not before Social Security and Medicare and looted and destroyed. This will be the last vestige of any value they have. Then like most of the rest of the world, society will be divided into two classes: a small extremely wealthy oligarchy and teaming masses of object poor. It's a grim future for most Americans.

The plan is simple.

Shitify public schools - destroy curiousity, critical thinking and comprehension of systems like finance, money, budgeting, civics, and personal rights. Make them compliant consumers with no thinking skills.

Then feed them a 24/7 programing schedule filled with a false reality where they will all be sucessful if they buy the "right things" and lots of them.

Feed them a diet of too much of everything.

rinse repeat until they die impoverished, over weight and stupid.

its just using all your desire against you. Psychological/emotional Judo.

Killing you with your own empty dreams.

Unplug the tv, study your enemy. learn to think. walk away from the system. Before it kills you.

Globalization is the problem. The Banking families and multinational corporations want globalization. If you are low and middle class your standard of living is being lowered as the jobs go overseas. If we want higher standards of living in the US we have to manufacturer what we need here in the states.

What the fuck good does it do if you go to buy something cheaper at Walmart when what you buy is made outside the US? Everytime we buy non-US we are supporting globalization. When your local manufacturing shuts down and goes overseas, when houses are built by subcontractors made up of illegals, when your company offshores its customer service, when you use professional services of those working with H1-B visas you are lowering your standard of living.

Consumerism is 70% of our economy. Small business creates jobs. Then why the fuck do we allow multinational US companies to do this to US workers. Cheaper goods? Bullshit.... the profits are at all times high for multinationals. Management and stockholders reap the benefits of lower wages here and abroad. This is the plan of globalization.

If you want higher standards of living in the US then the people have to change it. No more lobbying. No more bigger is better. Better for who? Not the workers. Apple has a large market cap but manufactures in Asia. Bullshit. Either you are for globalization or you are for nationalization, pick your poison.

I would rather my neighbors be successful. I want my neighbors to thrive... why because I live in their neighborhood. The idea that I am important and I want to make more money no matter who loses is bullshit. This is where we are.

Your employer determines your standard of living. If the job markets were not fucked up at some time you as an employee would have the upper hand in salary and mobility. This has been taken away by globalization. There is no free market capitalism, not any more. It is a rigged game and I hope fellow Americans wake up.

Fuck the banksters, fuck the corrupt potiticians and fuck the rich multinational corporate bastards that don't pay a living wage.

Oh did I offend? You should care, it's your grandkids' world too.

Der Kommissar's picture

This 100% correct! You see, each business owner acts rationally when he is looking to descrease labor cost: since their employees who are getting paid are right here and their numbers are limited and corporation knows how much he pays them, while customers are numerous and everywhere.  So, the rational decision on this level is to find labor elsewhere for fraction of the cost, while keep selling the goods here in the US for the same price. A stroke of genius!!! 100% return of capital. And as Marx said at this level or return capital becomes restless.

However, at the higher level (of the society at large), this is completely irrational approach, since your employees are someone else customers, and outsourcing will eventually kill consumer demand. And this is what is happening now. (Well, between start of the outsourcing and now, a lot of MBA types made a lot of dough, so for the them it was quite rational).

From the democracy perspective, the solution is for the people to elect the goverment that will stop the practice of oursourcing by voting in the people who will do that. But it does not happen. Why? Answers are well known.

Great blog post, but sad to say that time has run out.

Back in the '70s, when I was with Susan George's group, and several other volunteer (as in unpaid) political activist groups (including serving as a volunteer researcher on the House Select Committee on Assassinations [JFK side]), a director at the World Bank, and a member of the Du Pont family by marriage ($2 billion worth -- quite a bit at that time) laughed at us when we said we were going to fight agains their program to dismantle the American economy, beginning with a war against jobs offshoring.

Unfortunately, the sleazoid was correct to laugh, they've won and won soundly.  Who understands that a buyout fund (as in leveraged buyout fund) was established around 9/11/01?

How few Americans comprehend that on 9/10/01, when the comptroller of the Pentagon (this is public record, printed in newspapers the next day and on the news that evening) told a press briefing that $2.3 trillion was unaccounted for, and on the very next day the Defense Intelligence Agency's financial management group is almost completely wiped out when Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon's west wall?

And taken with that missing $1.7 trillion from other fed agencies, a nifty $4 trillion was transferred offshore into numerous hedge funds that September of 2001, thus initiating the hedge fund boom in 2002.

But over forty years of unpaid/volunteer political activism, the only thing I've come to accept is that Americans are getting ever more ignorant.

Too late, I'm afraid.... too late.

Anyone without a private jet lives in poverty. Poverty is not measured in how much paper you own; rather, it's measured how many gallons of oil you burn everyday.
