It's On: Saudi Arabia Severs Diplomatic Ties With Iran, "Does Not Care" If It Has Angered White House

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier today, as Iranian police struggled to disperse protesters gathered outside the Saudi consulate in Mashhad, we said the following about the rapidly deteriorating situation:

If crude needed an excuse to rally, then surely this is it as it now appears that in addition to the fact that Riyadh and Tehran are squaring off in Syria (where Iran is present and the Saudis fight by proxy) and Yemen (where the Saudis are present and the Iranians fight by proxy), the two countries are on the verge of a historic diplomatic crisis which has the potential to stoke sectarian violence across the Muslim world.

Well sure enough, just hours later, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Ahmad Al-Jubeir announced that Riyadh has cut diplomatic ties with Tehran. The Saudis have demanded the Iran mission leave the country within 48 hours.

Jubeir said the attack in Tehran was in line with what he said were earlier Iranian assaults on foreign embassies there and with Iranian policies of destabilizing the region by creating "terrorist cells" in Saudi Arabia.

"The kingdom, in light of these realities, announces the cutting of diplomatic relations with Iran and requests the departure of delegates of diplomatic missions of the embassy and consulate and offices related to it within 48 hours. The ambassador has been summoned to notify them," he said.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir

Riyadh also claims Iran did not attempt to stop protesters from storming the consulate.

Here's are the main bullet points:

  • SAUDI TO FIGHT TERRORISM IN ALL OF ITS FORMS: AL-JUBEIR
  • IRAN HAS SPREAD CHAOS, SECTARIANISM IN REGION, MINISTER SAYS
  • AL-JUBEIR COMMENTS BROADCAST ON AL-EKHBARIYA SAUDI STATE TV
  • ALL OPTIONS ON TABLE TO PROTECT SAUDIS, FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS
  • IRAQ PROMISED TO PROTECT SAUDI DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS: AL-JUBEIR
  • SAUDI ARABIA DETERMINED NOT TO ALLOW IRAN TO UNDERMINE SAUDI SECURITY-FOREIGN MINISTER

Promptly thereafter, Washington responded to Saudi Arabia's decision by calling for leaders throughout the region to take "affirmative steps" to reduce tensions, Reuters reports.

"We're aware of reports that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has ordered the closure of Iranian diplomatic missions in the Kingdom," an Obama administration official said.

"We believe that diplomatic engagement and direct conversations remain essential in working through differences and we will continue to urge leaders across the region to take affirmative steps to calm tensions."

However, at this point the Saudis are beyond caring what Obama thinks, and made that quite clear. As reported previously, here’s the latest out of Riyadh, via Reuters:

  • SAUDI ARABIA DOES NOT CARE IF IT HAS ANGERED THE WHITE HOUSE, SOURCE FAMILIAR WITH SAUDI GOVERNMENT'S THINKING SAYS: RTRS
  • SAUDI ARABIA'S POSITION TOWARD IRAN IS 'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,' SOURCE  FAMILIAR WITH SAUDI GOVERNMENT'S THINKING SAYS: RTRS

For those who might have missed it, the situation began to unravel on Saturday after Riyadh said it had executed prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr along with 46 other prisoners. Protesters poured into the streets from Bahrain to Pakistan and before the night was done, the Saudi embassy in Tehran was in flames.

All of this comes as Iran is projecting its influence in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, posing a threat to Saudi regional hegemony just as international sanctions on Tehran are set to be lifted.

The comments from Al-Jubeir seem to indicate that Riyadh is set to step up efforts to rein in the so-called "Shiite crescent", possibly by getting more involved in Syria, doubling down on the kingdom's commitment to the fight in Yemen, and, quite possibly, taking a more assertive role in Iraq by using the fight against ISIS as a smokescreen for some manner of intervention.

It's also worth noting how absurd it is for the Saudis to suggest that the Iranians are the ones "spreading chaos and sectarianism" in the region. After all, it wasn't Tehran that just executed a prominent member of another sect and it's not Iran that preaches a dangerous, ultra puritanical interpretation of Islam similar to that which Sunni extremists use to justify the execution of apostates. Further, it wasn't Iran that destabilized Syria by fanning the flames of sectarian discord.

In any event, this an exceptionally serious situation that could well mushroom into a direct conflict between the two countries which are already on opposite sides of multiple regional proxy wars.

Because they just had to have that "Made in China" label.

So sorry, camel-eye, but the rocket SW needs a reboot during fright.  ;-)

Remember when Bill Clinton allowed the sale of missile tech to China?

They got it and it took years to develop and finally make sales of said missiles.

Me thinks the Saudis are not pleased getting ass-fucked by Putin.

Seems Salmans son is going to take matters into his own hands.

Europe - get used to 10x the refugees of 2015 - and thank Uncle Sam, Allah and Mamma Merkel.

Humans a miserably failed species. Since Stonage. Nothing changed.

Still just dumb Neandertal men.

You can be sure that as we read this the Iranians are doubling and redoubling military aid to the Houthis in Yemen. It's hard to see how the Saudis can defend against this - the Iranians will forever remain a poisonous thorn in their side. And there doesn't seem any way the Saudis can get back at Iran, even by proxy force. So many hate the Saudi royal family and would like to see it toppled...Iran, Russia, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, ISIS....the list goes on.

Vatican fully recognizes Palestine state as landmark treaty enters force

https://www.rt.com/news/327794-vatican-recognition-treaty-palestine/

A treaty facilitating relationships between Vatican and Palestine – referred to as a “state” in the text – has entered full force, sealing de-facto recognition of Palestinian statehood by the Holy See.

The Vatican announced Saturday that its “Comprehensive Agreement” with the “State of Palestine” signed in June 2015 has come into full force, in which the Holy See bolstered support for the two-state solution of the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Referring to Palestine as “state” means Vatican has recognized it as an equal partner, thus sealing support for 2012 UN General Assembly resolution granting Palestine a non-member observer status.

The See Eye Aye have their dirty little fingerprints all over this thing.  There is no way they are going to let the evil house of Saud fail nor are they going to allow Iran to emerge as the super power in the middle east. Putin has proven to the world that ISIS/ Turkey illegal oil trade has been sanctioned by the US and their war on "terror" is a farce.

What scares the shit out of me is how quite things have been out of IS RA EL lately.  What are they up to?  I think the USA is trying to instigate WWIII through the Sauds or their NATO ally, Turkey.

There is no way in Hell the USA is going to walk away with a Putin/ Iran dominated middle east. Ain't gonna happen.

You may underestimate the power of the CIA and the criminal degenerate elites who have looted and terrorized this world  -killing millions and creating tens of millions of refugees. The world is getting sick of the evil globalists  -their supporters are politically correct liberal fag types in USA and Europe who are too busy with their gay sex love fest to ever put up a fight on a real battlefield  - Their power is based on the perception of their power and omnipotence - Honneger in East Germany and Couseceau in Romania  believed the same  -they rely on stupid , ignorant sheeple masses  -who once they pull their heads out of thier asses and get over the sweet intoxification of methane - can turn on them in a minute.

You should read the book, "The Second Oldest Profession" by Phlllip Knightley. It shows how really stee-uu-pid and incompetent our intelligence services really are, not only here but world wide. They're not like some CIA characters shown in the mooooo-veeeees. Also stop reading too much into the CIA and conspiracy theories. Many of them are crackpots and con artists to begin with.

Oil is a funny thing, despite the world wide glut of oil, all of the easy to find and cheap to produce oil is pretty much in the pipeline. Despite investing hundreds of billions of dollars into legacy oil, the amount produced of the cheap stuff has not risen for decades. Increasingly all of the surplus oil is found in the high cost oil plays. Fracking, Deep Water, Tar Sands, High Arctic. The recent heavy investments there have produced this glut. Any supply disruption to the cheap oil sources like Saudi and Persian would naturally result in a quick rise to $100 a barrel oil in order to fuel the marginal plays back into full production.

It has been argued by some of the sources I read that for a long time both the USA and Israel have striven to foster a Muslim World War. Meaning the great Islamic divide goes to war totally and in all places. Right now the world Sunni are lead from Saudi Arabia, the Shia of the world are led by Iran. So if indeed these two come to blows in the Persian gulf, then naturally oil will explode upward. Oil is found in and around the Islamic world, much of the cheap oil at least!

I can't begin to guess what would escalate the Saudi Iranian crisis further. Syria and Yemen are the present battlefields. Saudi has poured weapons and money and Jihadists into Syria in a mahor push to slow the Syrian Army. But so far the Syrians are clawing back their nation with help of Russian air power. Saudi could step into the Syrian war directly, but Russia now holds the trump card. The S-400 and Naval Version of S-300 are fully operationable and protected by Pantsir S1 short range A.A. systems. Saudi planes entering Syrian airspace are likely to be shot down.

I'de guess cooler heads prevail and nothing comes of this. If it does get worse, oil stands to go up. And Washington's nightmare of a rapid Rise in Russian oil revenues would come to pass. Remember Russia pumps fairly low cost high profit oil, American fracks rocks to get high cost low profit high debt oil. A clear winner can be seen. It ain't how much oil you got, it is how much it cost you to produce it.

Since GDP and Economic growth are a direct result of oil use, never, ever, count oil out. Sooner or later you gotta burn it if you want to live in the 21st century!

You're right that you can't ignore the inherent and critical value of oil - but we are also on Hubbert's "Rocky Plateau", and everything we've experienced since 1999 vis-a-vis oil has fallen in line with Hubbert's predictions.

We are now on the top of the peak, where we spend a decade, maybe two, in a see-saw relationship between the price of oil and economic growth.

Hubert failed to predict demand destruction, were the marginal cost of production exceeds what the economy can afford to pay.

Good question about Armstrong.  The Yemen rebels got updated rockets from somewhere.  Probably Iran.  They managed to hit some Saudi oil fields and do some damage.  I think the execution was probably meant as payback to Iran.  One can only hope this gets out of hand.  Iran and Saudi Arabia going to war might actually prevent a nuclear war.
