Meanwhile In Texas: Celebrating The New Open-Carry Gun Law

Tyler Durden's picture

As reported previously, in addition to celebrating the new year, starting January 1, Texans also celebrated a new open-carry gun law which took effect in the new year. Handgun license holders in Texas will now be allowed to carry their guns in visible holsters on their hip or shoulder.

Previously, Texans wanting to carry a handgun had to obtain a concealed handgun license and conceal their weapon. With the new law, the more than 826,000 state license holders will be allowed to openly display their handguns in most public places.

Proponents of the new open carry law say making guns more visible will deter mass shootings. The bill became law after a spirited debate.

However, not everyone was in favor of the idea to discourage violence through demonstrating weapons: a majority of the state's police chiefs opposed it.

"The question is: Does it make sense and is it good judgment to have a bunch of people running around with guns visible? And I think the answer is: Absolutely not," said Chief Art Acevedo of Austin.

Others are for it: Perkins owns Dallas-based The Slow Bone, a barbecue spot, and Maple & Motor, which specializes in burgers. He says his weapon of choice is a Glock 43, and he frequently carries it in his front pocket. He doesn't object to customers bringing concealed weapons into his restaurants.

"Carrying a concealed weapon is all about eventualities — things that might happen, and protection in that case," he says. "There's a lot of cash in my business. I have employees too. Restaurants get robbed, businesses get robbed, and I have employees that I would like to protect."

"Carrying a gun outside, on your person where it's visible, is at least an implied threat," he says. "If deadly force is your final threat, you're making it right away, visibly. ... I just really don't want that kind of threat feeling in either of the restaurants."

Even with the new state legislation, the number of people with handgun permits makes up only about 4 percent of Texas' population of more than 27 million. Out of these, Perkins thinks the number of people who want to openly carry weapons is pretty small.

Furthermore, private businesses are allowed to ban guns if they choose. In response, chains including Starbucks, Jack In The Box, Chili's, Sonic and Chipotle have asked customers to leave weapons at home.

If private businesses want to prevent people from bringing weapons inside, they are required by the law to display a sign with 1-inch block lettering. Separate signs are required for banning open carry and concealed carry. Perkins says he plans to put one up, but he doesn't foresee it causing any issues. "I don't think it's going to be a problem for us," Perkins says. "I don't think we're going to have confrontations."

Hopefully he is right and openly displayed weapons will indeed deter violence.

In the meantime Texans should get accustomed to sights such as this one which over the coming weeks and months will become increasingly recurring.

Exactly. Its a womans gun for 'merican gurly men who cannot shoot for shit.

The us has fired what, a million bullets for every "terrorist" killed?

Keep plinking those baby bullets, 'merican idiot armed forces. Derp.

Momentum = m * v 2.

I don't know what else to tell you.

You could try telling the truth, mate.

Momentum = m * v

There is no square of velocity involved.  It's classic Newtonian physics, which I recall from my public school education about 40 years ago.

Sorry, meant to write the low speed (sub-light) energy equation, and I even got that wrong.

Energy = 1/2 m * v2.

The point, however, remeins the same. The velocity term is squared. Taking a small projectile and accelerating it to very high (Newtonian) velocities means you get a greater energy transfer than you would with a larger projectile at a slower velocity.

this formula was an eye opener to me.  Note that mass is halved while velocity is squared.  Unless youre reaching out past a few football fields (or shooting suppressed), it doesnt often make sense to shoot something bigger.

Yeah, the 1/2 coefficient comes from integrating with respect to velocity, actually. Coefficients do not specifically apply to individual terms in an expression, whereas exponentials always do. So, to Ballin's post, you can think of the expression as m * 1/2 v2 if you like. The result is the same.

Not so simple.

From Wiki: muzzle energy,  3rd column energy in ft.lbs, 4th in joules.  I'll stick with .308.

Sorry about the formatting.  Doesn't carry over.

.223 is designed to maim, but not kill. It is more "humane"... or that's what I've heard. I prefer the .308

The idea that 5.56 rounds are designed to wound rather than kill is an urban legend. They were deployed with lethality in mind.

It's considered unethical to shoot a deer with a 5.56, BECAUSE of the high probability of leaving the deer to suffer for hours.  .308, for deer or men.  Unless you want them to suffer for hours.

The picture for this article is bullshit...Open carry of long arms (rifles, shotguns, etc) has always been allowed...The new law pertains to handguns.

  Maybe he has 5.56 loaded? .223 is a lower powered 'civilian cartridge, 5.56 is a higher pressure military round and you are ill advised to shoot 5.56 from your stamper for .223 use only Christmas AR. Read the link if you like data. http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/5-56-vs-223/

That is not what the article you linked says. The CUPs are virtually the same. You could get a problem if you get an upper with a tighter-than-usual ream job; and then you'll start seeing primers popping, and you'll stop before damaging your rifle (or yourself). It's OK to treat 5.56 and .223 as interchangeable.

One thing it does is makes it where you can "kind of" conceal care. It's hard sometimes to keep a concealed gun 100% concealed 100% of the time. Under the old law this was required.

In some States, state laws are a bit screwed up.  E.g., in my state, I cannot Conceal Carry as a Green-Card (Perm. Resident), even though this status lets me do so in 37 States and 2 neighboring states (with my Utah Conceal Carry License).  You need to be a US Citizen to Conceal Carry in my state (OR).  Go figure.

I can Open Carry, but that is asking for more grief than it's worth.  So I keep my G&A at home, or in the car if going to a shooting range.

Happily I don't live, work, shop or play in Zip codes, where I the need for a gun is statistically significant.  According to the pasty-faced demographics in my area, it is more likely that my upper-middle-class, past-faced neighbors will use it on themselves than on someone else.

The USA is about the only country that would even come close to granting a "Green card " holder any type of gun ownership benefits. I wouldn't bitch to much. Even a simple hunting trip out of the Country is a mess of red tape these days.

I first saw/noticed Open Carry a few years ago up in WA... at a Baskin Robbins. It bothered me at first, but then I remembered that 'open carry' is SOP for the cops, so why not everyone else? And there's no question that OC encourages good manners & civility.

OC hasn't bothered me since, and I'm quite happy to see more of it. I trust legal gun owners alot more than I trust the average person (or cops).

It is no coincidence that most of these mass murders occur in 'gun-free zones'.  OC (and CC) would quickly change that dynamic, IMO.

Open carry is a good deterrent, less likely to be attacked or robbed. Open carry and Stand Your Ground are an open admission by the state that the tax supported Justice system has completely failed. Time for a refund and mass layoffs.

Now we have to replace Police Chiefs that oppose the constitution.  They want my support for cops, then they need to CLARLY UNDERSTAND not to abridge my constitutional rights to KEEP AND BEAR ARMS!!!!  Those "Police Chiefs" need to resign, because the violate their LEO oath, and they are also breaking the law and violating a civil liberty.

You cops want your pensions and my support?  Support ME.  When seconds cound, a cop is minutes away!

The only reason to have cops in an armed society is to issue warrents and pick up messes.

Cops are useless parasites.

If you disbanded them and took away their pensions crimes would go down 40-50 percent.

I'm generally anti-gun, but I am not overly alarmed by this. My issue is with concealed HANDguns. If you are not a criminal, why do you need to conceal your gun?

Try this: Think for yourself and list three reasons a non-criminal might want to conceal a handgun. Once you learn that you can do that, you might find that you keep thinking of more reasons. Then, with your newfound confidence in your own ability to think independently, you won't be able to stop. Only then will you be free.

You can thank your fellow leftists for anti gun, concealed carry laws. They couldn't get guns banned outright so they made laws against 'open carry'. Then laws against 'going armed to the terror of the public'.

Jam :" Good guns for target shooting Dutch Boy paint cutouts and signs."

Actually the 1911 probably has more combat kills accreddited to it than any other sidearm issued to US forces.

___________________________________________________________________________

"Many special forces units within the armed services still select 1911-pattern sidearms. In 1998 The FBI S.W.A.T. team adopted the Springfield 1911A1 as standard issue. Anecdotal evidence out of Desert Storm indicates that the Berettas jammed because of the fine sand in the desert and the Marines broke out the 1911’s.

Today (1998) 1911-pattern pistols are produced by Colt, Springfield Armory, Kimber, Para-Ordnance, Wilson Combat, Les Baer, Ed Brown, Caspian, STI, Robar, Auto-Ordnance, Strayer-Voight, Charles Daley, IAI, Llama, and others. The 1911 is perhaps more popular today than any time in its long and illustrious career.

A lot of people believe that the 1911-pattern pistol is the greatest combat handgun ever built. I certainly wouldn’t argue with them, although I am aware that some other good pistols have been designed since 1911. It remains one of the best fighting guns ever, even though the single action design has become something of a liability in this hoplophobic milieu in which we live. Rather than stoking the “best” argument which is truly endless and without resolution, I will say only that the 1911 occupies a very special place in the history of combat weaponry, and in the hearts of pistoleros everywhere. It was the 1911 in the hands of Cpl. York which brought down the German patrol, which downed the Zero for 2nd Lt. Bagget, and fought until dawn against overwhelming odds with Kouma, Basilone, and Schmid. It was the 1911 which lay under John Dillinger’s pillow and dangled from the drunken hand of Machine Gun Kelley at his capture. This rich history coupled with the superb performance of the pistol is unique and will never be duplicated.
