Up until now, the best summation of the European response to its ongoing economic depression came from the former president of the Eurogroup council of Eurozone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker and his legendary "When it becomes serious, you have to lie [7]." Today we get another contender for a quote that encapsulates European thinking in the New insolvent Normal, and it comes from Greek PM Antonis Samaras. To wit:
Samaras: "You have to tell people the truth but you have to give them hope as well." #DUP13 [8]

And a just as surreal follow up:
Samaras describes unprecedented recession & unemployment in #Greece [10] "If you want to see democracy under pressure, it's here" #DUP13 [8]
— Kathimerini English (@ekathimerini) September 16, 2013 [11]
And another...
Samaras: "Everyone now talks of Grecovery as they expect Greece to begin recovering next year" #DUP13 [8]
— Kathimerini English (@ekathimerini) September 16, 2013 [12]
In conclusion:
Samaras: "Greece will stand as European success at the end of all this" #DUP13 [8]
