Survivalist and Prepper thread-share your thoughts
Of course, no forum is complete without some sort of: "The Economy is Screwed, so Now What!?" type of thread.
I just thought I would post a few links to get anyone interested a jump start, then share my status:
Rawles' site is one of the best:
I like these forums which are also full of info:
http://www.survivalistboards.com/
As for me, I'm only about 6 months ahead on food stock and other basics. Most good preppers are at 1.5 to 2 years ahead.
BTW, lots of cool techy prep stuff on Amazon such as this:
http://www.amazon.com/Lifesaver-Bottle-6000-Ultra-Filtration/dp/B001EHF9...
If you are thinking about it, now is a good time to start. Even with a short local emergency this will make you feel a lot better.
Thoughts, people? Are you a prepper?

The world's most strange tour guide in Italy, they will take you to sites before you spend 40 minutes to explain the historical background, and then said: "Well, now you can go visit, 20 minutes after collection. " "Since Come to visit, what are you wordy so long, we have so much time wasted? "So some people unhappy, to the next monument, he did not listen to explanations, take the tour.

I'm a would-be survivalist without good means of being a prepper, so my escape plan is to flee with my family to Australia, assuming we can make it there.
I have lots of canned goods, but not enough water for us to last long, and very little storage space, but we will try and have a least a few weeks worth.
Also, if anyone has tips on best way to start a gold hedge I am all ears. I know the price has shot up since I started wanting to do it, but I'm still interested, I see it as insurance.
Seeds and the knowledge of how to use them, reproduce them, store them. The ability to preserve food through multiple bad seasons, so you can eat through a drought or a flood or a blizzard. Water collection, containment, filtration. Soil enrichment. Good quality hand tools, and practice with them now so you don't hurt yourself when the time comes. A little defense goes a long way. People don't generally mess with a person who looks like they have nothing left to lose, so don't flaunt what you've got. Low profile, quiet, and slightly "batshit - I don't give a f***" attitude will protect you way more than stockpiles of guns and ammo. Plus, knowing how to weild an axe comes in handy when the errant meth craving zombie comes looking for grub. Land... well... now it's a problem. I rent a small plot out in the country - enough for what I need to do. In the long run good land won't be as big a deal b/c *most* human beings would rather suffer in misery together than independently survive/thrive. People will abandon the land and head to the comfort of slums and ghettos. Don't be them. Consider the Amish. They are radical isolationists. They will still be so when all this nonsense has passed. They will not endure what the sheeple (us) are going to go through. They'll just be able to easily expand their communities and enjoy a solid quality of life, for another three centuries, on all we have abandoned, cast off, and disposed of. That's wisdom people. Spam is not wisdom. Spam - canned spam - is just going to make you sick while you wait to head out to the tent city.
You couldn't be more wrong, but that's OK. I won't change your mind anyway. For any other young person reading this, let me tell you something. First, the Amish will be slaughtered. Gone, bye-bye. Second, if you don't have weapons and the training to use them you will end up like the Amish. Third, seeds are good, but what will you eat if you have a bad crop? It takes an average of ten years to learn how to be a farmer. You think you got ten years? Fourth, as far as the 'comfort of the ghetto' comment, all I can say is you've never lived there. Lastly, if your entertain any ideas that you will 'luck out', or you will just wait and join up with like minded people when TSHTF, then you can look forward to hunger like you only read about followed by a brutal end.
this is a good blog i've been reading lately. its smart and well written.
http://www.oftwominds.com/blog.html
he has written an online book called Survival+ Structuring Prosperity for Yourself and the Nation.
It's extremely well thought out and thorough. I looked around the forum to see where I should post it, and this seems to be the best place.

I'll check that link out.
I suppose calling it Preppers is more mainstream.
The bottom line is that you purchase food storage you know you will use and rotate it. That way you are never "stuck" with stuff you won't use.
For "lazier" folks, you can hit up Jim Rawles ' Survival Realty , then buy a 1-2 yar Mountain House prep package and be done with it.
;)
there is another survival board out there,
www.neardeathexperiments.com
don't let the name fool you or scare you off, it's not some "how to" board for how to commit suicide and it's not some internet goth game.
This site contains a ton of useful information of the "how to" or "where to find" variety on nearly every subject imaginable for a prepper including, but not limited to: Food/water/shelter/power/firearms/hunting and on and on. The site limits access to members for some subjects, like firearms and medical issues discussions for example, but it's easy enough to join if you want to see it all.
"Also read Karl Denninger's 10 Things You Must Do post".
Where can one find this post? I used the search option but nothing came up.
Here is the link to Karl Denninger's "10 Things You Must Do":
http://market-ticker.org/archives/1091-Ten-Things-You-Must-Do.html
you ve been watching too many movies people.
People used to tell me that all the time when I was a big prepper in the '80s. Then, when the drought hit and the world's wheat harvest went bad, Russia invaded and I started up a group called the Wolverines. Ever heard of us? Yeah I thought so, about a dozen of us fought them off and thats why we are typing this in english.
Wolverines rock! Thank you.
You are all spot on. You need food, but a water source is very important. someone said, a second location. Yes get away from people, and hide. Going to get ugly.
Having a stockpile of necessities is just another form of life insurance. As with all life insurance, having too much or too little may not be a reasonable choice. Did you see how H1N1 grew exponentially and in six weeks time spannd the world? What if it had been more fatal? Wouldn't it have been nice to be able to stay home for a few months if there had been a more fatal pandemic? What if the financial system had thoroughly crashed last fall, leading to no credit of any sort? Would that have impaired the truckers bringing your food? What would you have done then?
Since when did self-reliance become synonymous with "paranoid"?
Thanks Cindy for starting this forum!
There are enough realistic contingencies, that to not consider preparation is a mistake.
The most basic stuff that costs peanuts is probably the most important.
Water to drink and the most basic foods are the minimum. A psychology of self reliance will be most important if the situation gets bad.
This not paranoia about the risk of Financial Collapse or some worries about this or that.
This is about having a level of preparation sufficient to withstand a dislocation of our "Just In Time" supply chain.
Great comment, Lots of people fail to realize what you would give for some food and water when you are starving or dying of dehydration. People need to ask themselves if I was in the desert dying what would I give for some food or water, or better yet what would I do to give my daughter or wife a drink of water and some food. People have no problem buying rims for their cars, but think investing in a small food storage is stupid. I wont be trading my food for rims end of... I dont let people know about my food storage only because I dont want people to come and bother me "IF" shit ever hits the fan, but would never be imbarrassed to say if asked...
I don't think most people have blazeofglory syndrome. The smarter ones stock up and keep a low profile and preferably have a G.O.O.D plan, to a secondary location.
I wasn't going to get into weaponry, but obviously, its a "must have".
Its good to know who you can truly rely on in this sort of scenario so you may want to consider approaching people you think are your buddies and see if you could trust them with your life.
Unless you intend t guard your stuff all night, all week...all year and not need sleep, LOL
Also read Karl Denninger's 10 Things You Must Do post.
Has anyone considered the flip side of survivalism? Perhaps we could label it "blazeofgloryism?"
When the oil, electricity, food, communications, medical care, ammunition, liquor, transportation and social order have gone away, why work so damn hard to swim against the tide?
A lot of these survivalist scenarios that others have illustrated are getting people prepared for situations they'll never face, and that defeats the whole purpose of personal agility and adaptability to unpredictable environments and situations.
That said, I am armed to the freaking teeth, have built most of the guns I own myself, and will demonstrate my skills on anyone who wants to take my stuff.
I have a seed bank and a shotgun so far...
I found out that the shotgun is an antique. Stupid inheretance.
Yes, but not nearly ready.
I'm collecting slowly. Can't afford to get much at one time, low on money. I've got some basic food stores, headlamps, emergency blankets and tylenol. I've been following this guy Ferfal over at http://ferfal.blogspot.com/ where he had to deal with Argentina's collapse in 2001. Good luck to all.
Hell yeah! Been at it since October. The basics are done but there's always more to do. Just bought a case of SPAM and a case of canned soup today.
FYI - survivalistboards.com is a great place to learn
