A Zero Hedge Petition: Break Debt Habit, Freeze The Debt Ceiling





 

Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.

While Zero Hedge has been accused of disagreeing with President Obama's statements, ideas, and policies before, we would like to state on the record that we wholeheartedly agree with the President on this one occasion, with the caveat that it was uttered at a time when i) he was not a president, and ii) he presumably actually did in fact care about "our children and grandchildren" instead of simply indulging in an onanistic splurge of spending, bailing out beta chasing bankers and hedge fund managers, and, through his appointee Ben Bernanke, reducing the national currency of the United States to a smoking hulk of burnt toast. Superimposing Obama from 2006 with his current incarnation, threatens a schizoid break no less than would dropping Bono's two alter egos (Macphisto and The Fly) in the same room without a limitless supply of Thorazine.

Ironically, the President now has to completely backtrack on his rhetoric and must tell his adoring public that he was only kidding in 2006, being a young and foolish Senator, while the grizzled and cynical Obama of today is forced to convince another pack of young and foolish Senators to raise the US federal debt ceiling from $12.1 trillion to $13 trillion. Absent this approval, the US will likely default by mid-October.

So even as the President may no longer really care for the "children and grandchildren", 300 million other Americans do. Raising the debt ceiling (first to $13 trillion, eventually to $1 quadrillion+), and printing an infinite amount of infinitely devaluing pieces of printed cotton is easy. It is also wrong. This is especially true because the President is doing it in order to inflate his way out of the massive credit crunch that would force the entire US banking system to go bankrupt and subsequently restructure- like it is supposed to- if only it were left alone to its own devices. This is why, we at Zero Hedge, appeal to you, our readers, to join us in this petition to prevent the debt ceiling from being raised... and again... and again... until such time as it is merely a joke of a formality (if we are not too late), and the US descends ever faster on its way to sovereign insolvency and its new status as a Chinese vassal state. On the bright side, there will be renewed United States interest in Nepal.

Once we have collected your signatures, we will forward the petition over to members of Senate who will certainly not change their behavior, and who will absolutely pass Obama's debt ceiling increase request, but who will be made aware that an increasing number of Americans are watching their every step and grow increasingly disapproving of the actions taken by both the Senate and the Congress, as they pile on a skyrocketing and untenable debt burden for future generations, all with the simple goal of buying some more election goodies and making sure that the current banking system can indefinitely postpone its inevitable day of reckoning.

While petitions certainly are a catharsis of sorts, it doesn't seem to have much of an effect.

Poor timing - - - Obama is giving a speech about health care reform tonight.  The national debt is frightening, and the site is a great at spotlighting crooks...that said, the president is trying to un-rig the health insurance game.  Plenty of crooks in that racket would benefit from a heavy dose of distraction right about now. 

Armageddon may be waiting for us down the road, but an infatuation with the possibility of it is as usefull now as a sh*t flavored lollipop.

I was never in a conventional war, but this IS WAR, people. Have only been on ZH for a number of weeks, but I would and will go to war and do anything I can for the America represented by the folks here. My father fought and almost died for the America of 1945, the America we need to get back to, and FUCK THE BANKSTERS.

We have our minds, we have an amazing vehicle of instantaneous information flow, we have integrity, we have our memories of when things were not this corrupt, we have guns, and we will not give up without a fight.

A fight hopefully not of violence, but of ideas, character, and rightousness.

This and other petitions like it, if, no, when we attain the groundswell to really scare the bastards about losing their jobs or being replaced, we wil have wrested back the power from the lobbyists, the specail interests, and they WILL become "representatives" once more.

See, now here's the problem with your thinking on this matter: The romanticized America of 1945 or whenever never actually existed. It was pretty much always like this.

The two world wars were nothing but another chapter in the banksters' scams. They cause chaos and reap the rewards while millions of people die. There is no "just cause."

maybe its just me, but isn't the real purpose of a central bank to debase the currency in order that the status quo interests can give away all the free stuff to the citizens so they stay complacent?

Freezing the debt ceiling, to me, is immaterial so long as the central bank still exists and can create money from nothing except some ink, paper, and small amount of electricity.

Debasing the currency and forcing a small amount of inflation is a thing that the central banks think is a good idea so long as its "managed" inflation. While its a nice idea, and I've signed the petition, I just wonder at the efficacy of it if we still have a central bank at the end. I mean, you don't debase the dollar by 94+% since the central bank was created in 1913 by accident. Especially since the purchasing power has done nothing but go down from then to now.

You don't need to worry about NSA or any govt agency. If you've ever worked in that community, or in those circles, you'd know how unbelievably inept, paralyzed and silo'ed those agencies are. They have enough of a problem keeping the Chinese from hacking into their systems, or just procuring a laptop or toilet seat, let alone wasting time going after a group of people who don't pose a threat. They're just people too, doing a job... a secret spooky job, but they punch a clock too.

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with violating civil liberties and privacy, and the someday potential of the power that has been given to them. However, you give them too much credit. They only have those capabilities in Hollywood.

Be afraid of the lobbying organizations, internationals / cartels and PACs, or large corporations, they have to answer to a profit, and have few real constraints on their behavior.

b) Don't seem to understand that the "National Debt" is simply an accounting device - like the Social Security "Trust Fund" - which can be fun to get excited about and argue till the wee hours, but whose "size" doesn't matter, since all the government accountants have to do is keep adding zeros until the end of time.
