Yes, fear was one of the reasons why Finland joined NATO. We feared the fate of Ukraine, when we changed our stance on NATO membership. You obviously cannot understand it, as you are not a Finn.

NATO has not set up Norway yet, although it has been a member of NATO since its inception and neighbor of Russia.

NAZO needs suckers and your little instawhore PM installed by her Wef masters sold you out

Our ex-PM the twerking queen Sanna would've been ousted like Ukraine's Yanukovich, had she not applied for NATO on behalf of Finland. Ask basically any Finn, and she/he will tell you the same.

Apparently no amount of ice baths can wake you up to reality.

I haven't taken an ice bath for many months now. The sea is still open here.

Major? You mean by paying gold up front for some trucks?

At least you are honest about how clueless you are. Let me help you there.

Even before the United States entered World War II in December 1941, America sent arms and equipment to the Soviet Union to help it defeat the Nazi invasion. Totaling $11.3 billion, or $180 billion in today’s currency, the Lend-Lease Act of the United States supplied needed goods to the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1945 in support of what Stalin described to Roosevelt as the “enormous and difficult fight against the common enemy — bloodthirsty Hitlerism.”

  • 400,000 jeeps & trucks
  • 14,000 airplanes
  • 8,000 tractors
  • 13,000 tanks
  • 1.5 million blankets
  • 15 million pairs of army boots
  • 107,000 tons of cotton
  • 2.7 million tons of petrol products
  • 4.5 million tons of food

Finland has now chosen their protectors. Best of luck.

Finland also has taken a stance against the oppression of Ukraine by Russia, by ending its neutrality. Not all decisions should be made with egoistical motivations. I am personally ready to lower my standards of living, if that can help stop authoritarian nations attacking their neighbors.

Russia has mopped the floor with collective NATO in Ukraine. But mighty Finland can stand up to Russia even though it's logistically impossible to resupply from its new NATO buddies? LMAO.

Ukraine is not even a member of NATO, and has been demilitarized by Kremlin's puppet leaders since its inception thirty years ago. Finland on the other hand has been preparing for the invasion since WW2 and having mandatory army ever since. Ukraine is open flat fields, while Finland is endless forrests with swamps and lakes everywhere.

The Finnish patrol won the competition, which involved snipers from 25 countries. The Finnish team won gold in the European Best Sniper competition on Saturday, Maat says. The competition is also considered to be the European Sharpshooter Championship. The week-long competition involved shooters from NATO countries and NATO partner countries. Held in Germany, 45 teams from 25 countries participated in the competition.

Ok, so the ice bath rarely drops below 5C, and I buy a lot of ice (and I have a thermometer.. it's a cold training thing for (us?) crazy people))

Nothing crazy about it. Many Finns do it almost daily in the winter.

It's so fucking stupid. I love the Russian mind, but it has a reflexive angst about war. I have been sheltered from it, but it manifest in my family and friends. I don't get why the Finns would want to poke that.

So Londoner, if you want to understand how Finns think of Russia, and maybe learn something of Russia, I recommend watching this lecture by a finnish retired intelligence colonel, who has lived in Russia and speaks the language fluently. He focused on Russia during his whole career. You think you understand Russia better than him?

No, that is why we joined NATO. Russia has not dared to attack NATO members. They have and are attacking countries that are not in NATO.

Well 80 years ago Finland (pop. 3½ M) was left alone to fend off invading Soviet Union (pop. ~190M). We will tolerate Kremlin's little hybrid operations for the extra assurance of our nation's safety NATO's Article 5 provides. If you had lived your life here, and your grandfathers had experienced the wars, I am pretty sure you would have chosen NATO as well.

Grateful or not, Finland should recognise what made it happy and wealthy - no confrontation with a major neighbour

We should be grateful for Russia for not attacking Finland for the last 80 years? Is that what you are saying? Less than 10% of Finland's trade was with Russia, before the Ukrainian war. Let that fact sink in for a moment.

Now, building a little paper fence against the people that turned the tide against ze Germans, really?

Soviet Union received major support from the US during their efforts against the Nazis. Has Russia or Soviet Union recognized that ever? What about the Western aid Russia received for a decade after the Soviet Union collapsed? Any recognition of that?

Why not just agree not to fight.

How is it not obvious that Finland (pop. 5M) does not want to fight with Russia (pop. 140M)?

ice bath experience

How do you accomplish that in London? I went to sea yesterday for seven minutes and the water is still +3C after a couple of weeks of frosty weather. We still need to wait for at least a few weeks for the ice cover to arrive where the water is moving. The showers here give around +10C water at minimum. Do you have a freezer filled with water?

I just don't think you get the Russian mind set - we want no wars, we've had 20-40% of our population die in the last century, political causes aside.

If Kremlin thought that Finland, a brand new NATO member, was a threat to it, they wouldn't have moved most their soldiers and weapons from the Finnish border after the war in Ukraine started.

Also how could Finland threaten Russia? Finland attacking Russia would a complete suicide. Everybody should be able to understand this. Also Russia's other northern neighbor Norway has been in NATO since its inception. Not much has changed.

I also think the (modern day) Russians would have never moved against a friendly/neutral Finland as it would be completely disadvantageous.

We Finns don't take your word for this. We rather take the extra assurance of the Article 5, rather than risk it. We can't afford to lose hundreds of thousands of soldiers like Russia does. There are only 5.5 million of us.

Also what makes you think that you know that Russia would never move against a friendly/neutral Finland? How much do you know about Finland-Russia relationship of the era when Finland was  friendly/neutral with Russia? Well we both know the answer to my last question, so don't even bother. You are a dumb yankee who thinks he knows shit, when all you know is what Hollywood, Alex Jones and Tucker have told you. You are one of these Ph.D.s of FOX news.

Ask yourself this: Why does Russia need Ukraine or Georgia(Abkhazia/Ossetia) or Moldova(Transnitria)? How did Russia become the biggest country in the world?

Russia is notorious for it's trolls (The Internet Research Agency / Glavset), and the way they parrot certain statements from Kremlin's agenda.

What BorgNine is saying is straight from the Glavset's text books.

"Finland should be grateful for Russia. Russia gave them independence and made them wealthy, and this is how they show their gratefulness. Finland owes everything to Russia, so they deserve everything Russia does to them."

You think you hold the high ground? Be more conscientious.

Well, yojimbo. I do think that I know a few more details about Finland-Russia relationship that BorgNine. He makes idiotic assumptions and conclusions with no knowledge or understanding whatsoever. Isn't that right BorgNine?

No Russian tanks closing in on the Finnish border anytime soon. Thanks to our strong military, and our NATO membership. :D

No, we want to live in peace. That is why we joined NATO. History has proved that NATO members in close proximity of Russia have lived peacefully, unlike those that are not in NATO. These hybrid operations are nothing compared to what Russia is doing to Ukraine, which is not a member in NATO. Don't you agree my dear Gaius?
