How To Track Bank Runs In (Near) Real Time
Now that everyone is transfixed by what is unquestionably a global financial crisis - and bank run - one which finally had its Wile Coyote moment today courtesy of what may well be Credit Suisse's terminal implosion absent a prompt bailout of the Swiss banking giant, what investors really want to know is which banks are seeing the biggest deposit outflows, i.e., who is next?
Over the weekend, we published a list of the most deposit-constrained small banks which by extension are also the ones most prone to deposit flight risk, but while the theory is useful, what would be great is real time data of deposit moves, something similar to this "BofA Gets More Than $15 Billion in Deposits After SVB Fails" but for all banks.
Alas, absent internal leaks - and we are confident they will be coming - it is virtually impossible to get such information on a bank by bank basis, and usually by the time management does release it, it's already too late.
