Trump In Mexico Dials Back Criticism, Did Not Discuss Who "Will Pay For The Wall"

During his surprising meeting with Mexico's president , Donald Trump called for the end to the "humanitarian disaster" of illegal immigration as he sought to strike - and according to many achieved - a presidential tone during a visit to Mexico on Wednesday.  Standing alongside Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto, the GOP presidential nominee read from a prepared statement touting the "shared objective" of ending illegal immigration.

"This is a humanitarian disaster — the dangerous treks, the abuse by gangs and cartels and the extreme physical dangers — and it must be solved, it must be solved quickly,” Trump said.

"No one wins in either country when human smugglers and drug traffickers prey on innocent people, when cartels commit acts of violence, when illegal weapons and cash flow from the United States into Mexico or when migrants from Central America make a dangerous trek, and it is very very dangerous, into Mexico or the United States without legal authorization.”

Trump confirmed he spoke with Pena Nieto about his proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Asked whether they discussed Trump’s insistence that Mexico pay for the wall, Trump replied, “We didn’t discuss that.”

Trump late Tuesday night announced the last-minute surprise trip to the country that he has spent the vast majority of his campaign hammering.  He started his campaign decrying many of the undocumented immigrants flowing in from Mexico as “criminals” and “racists,” and has repeatedly cast illegal immigration as a threat to the country.
