Radioactive Cloud Over Europe May Have Come From "Nuclear Accident" In Russia Or Kazakhstan

About a month ago, we noted reports from the French nuclear watchdog ISRN that a spike in airborne radioactivity had been detected in the air in Western and Central Europe: "Ruthenium-106 has been detected by several European networks involved in the monitoring of atmospheric radioactive contamination, at levels of a few milliBecquerels per cubic meter of air."

According to IRSN calculations, the very low levels of atmospheric contamination of ruthenium 106 observed by European monitoring networks had no environmental or health consequences but several agencies across Europe were actively seeking answers on the origin of the contamination.

Fast forward to today, and the IRSN now believes they can narrow down the source of the "nuclear accident" to a nuclear facility in Russia or Kazakhstan sometime in the last week of September.  Per the Telegraph:

A cloud of radioactive pollution over Europe in recent weeks indicates that an accident has happened in a nuclear facility in Russia or Kazakhstan in the last week of September, French nuclear safety institute IRSN said on Thursday.


The IRSN ruled out an accident in a nuclear reactor, saying it was likely to be in a nuclear fuel treatment site or centre for radioactive medicine. There has been no impact on human health or the environment in Europe, the IRSN said.


IRSN, the technical arm of French nuclear regulator ASN, said in a statement it could not pinpoint the location of the release of radioactive material but that based on weather patterns, the most plausible zone lay south of the Ural mountains, between the Urals and the Volga river.


This could indicate Russia or possibly Kazakhstan, an IRSN official said.


And while the source of the contamination is yet to come forward, IRSN notes that if an accident of similar magnitude happened in France "it would have required the evacuation or sheltering of people in a radius of a few kilometers around the accident site."

IRSN estimates that the quantity of ruthenium 106 released was major, between 100 and 300 teraBecquerels, and that if an accident of this magnitude had happened in France it would have required the evacuation or sheltering of people in a radius of a few kilometers around the accident site.


The ruthenium 106 was probably released in a nuclear fuel treatment site or center for radioactive medicine, Peres said. Because of its short half-life of about a year, ruthenium 106 is used in nuclear medicine.


The IRSN ruled out an accident in a nuclear reactor, as that would have led to contamination with other radionuclides too. It also ruled out the crash of a ruthenium-powered satellite as an IAEA investigation has concluded that no ruthenium-containing satellite has fallen back on earth during this period.


Measurement from European stations showed high levels of ruthenium 106 in the atmosphere of the majority of European countries, at the beginning of October, with a steady decrease from Oct. 6 onwards.

Despite the concern for residents in close proximity to the "accident," IRSN has again confirmed that the concentrations of ruthenium 106 in the air that have been recorded in Europe were of no consequence for human health and the environment.

  Well the good news might be that Ruthenium-106 might be suppressing a whole bunch of CO2 which is destroying the atmosphere.

I guess whoever wrote this knows the sheeple won't bother trying figure out what the data shows. 11 of the 12 radiation levels in the table are indicated as less than the noise level of the recording instruments, that is the data does not show with any certainty that there even was any radiation above background level or measurement error. The one reading claimed to be definite is only about 30% above the noise level.

I am an actual nuclear engineer and 200 TBq is an absolute fuckton of radiation (to be somewhere it isn't supposed to be). My question would be if there is that much Ru-106, where are the other fission products? If this is fission release, there should be a fucking lot of radioiodine around: that is how they found out about Chernobyl. If it was a pure Ru-106 release, it means it was a medical or processing plant issue. But still, 200 TBq is a lot. Ru-106 itself is pretty tame as a pure beta emitter with a fairly low engery. However, its daughter is Rh-106, which it will always be in secular equalibrium with, has some decent gamma radiation coming off of it. So 200 TBq of Ru-106 = 200 TBq of Rh-106 ... fuck it, I am too drunk to calculate how much dose you will get, but ...

I was pretty coherent 'till the end. The point I guess I was trying to make was it is weird that this is the only isotope. If this was a nuclear fission reactor issue, you would see a whole lot of other things, and supposedly we don't. However, there have been a few of these "wierd isotope readings in the air near Russia" recently.I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Russia was incinerating nuclear waste. Ru-106 has medical applications but has a long half-life. This means it sticks around for awhile.

I someone is reading this a day later....It won't obscure anything. Well.... if you detectors are set up right it won't. Radiation only obscures other radiation when large concentrations are in the area. These don't fit with high concentrations. Think of it this way, can you see a red LED on your calculator if a floodlight is right behind said calculator? Depends on the floodlight.

I met a monitor of the UN a couple of weeks ago who studies and reports on threats in the Ukraine.  He was worried about chlorine gas in a local water treatment plant being a terrorist threat.  While I couldn't disagree I pointed him to all the used nuclear fuel in storage on the Ukrainian nuclear sites just beside the reactors.  If someone rolled up a fertilizer truck bomb to one of those sites it's game over.  His eyes got big.  I hoped he got the message.

That's a huge chlorine plant for the Slavansk Ti sponge plant the became illegal dur to the non nuke status of Ukraine and the Ti rolling mill next to it (that has a German name on  it).. by UN decree in 2010.. and don't forget the exploding Ti compressor blades of the F-135 Pratt and Whiteny engine and the finding of that Massachusetts importing company that was found at fault for not having the proper paperwork (providence) for the supplied Ti.  []

Little known fact, France is heavily dependent (and when I say heavily dependent, I mean HEAVILY dependent) on nuclear power and 85% of the nuclear power industry is owned by the government of France. So...I wonder where the "nuclear cloud" over Frawnse is coming from?//////Oh look, Le Seyne sur Mer (the highest concentration given by the chart above) is right down the road from a closed nuclear reactor farm called Marcoule Phenix. Clearly the...RUSSIANS!...agin ;-)

Radiation is something most of our (and rival) spy satellites are trained to detect immediately. I mean, come on! We're had been detecting heat signatures of shoulder-launched RPG's from half a world away and we can't figure out where a giant neutron-spewing cloud is coming from or when exactly it showed up? Bull shit! When it comes to climate, they're confident where it'll be in 100 years though. No mystery there.

I remember my mother telling me a story about when she worked at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland in roughly 1964...China had just done a nuclear test(Atmospheric in those days) and they took the deep well Geiger counter and used it to measure for radioactivity and sure enough it had made its way over..This ain’t rocket science folks...Fukushima and the lies around that should give everyone say the least...

Back in the Fifties and Sixties the US did open air nuclear bomb testing a lot. Radioactive fallout drifted across the country on a regular basis. All milk, even mother's milk contained Strontium 90. People would sit outside on the strip in Las Vegas and watch the flash and mushroom clouds from the nearby tests. Fukushima is is miniscule compared to what we lived through. It can hardly be measured on the West coast of the US, it is so weak.Did we all die? No. We are now proceeding to outlive our parents' generation.
