Apple Diversity Chief Forced Out After Saying White Men Can Also Be 'Diverse'

Silicon Valley's disdain for its mostly white, mostly male tech workforce has reached absurd new heights.

The New York Post is reporting that, after just six months on the job, Apple Diversity Chief Denise Young Smith, who was named vice president of diversity and inclusion in May, has resigned her post after making a “controversial” comment last month during a summit in Bogota, Colombia.

What was Young’s crime? She insinuated that “diversity” can still exist among a group of white men because of their different life experiences.

“There can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blond men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation,” the inaugural diversity chief said.

“Diversity is the human experience,” she said, according to Quartz. “I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT."

That’s right: Young, who is – for the record – a black woman, has been forced out of Apple because her views on diversity were too inclusive.

As the Post pointed out, Young’s comments appeared to defend Apple’s overwhelmingly white and male leadership at a time when the company’s makeup is markedly uneven. This begs the question: What, exactly, was she defending them from?

Young, a 20-year Apple veteran who previously served as the company’s head of worldwide human resources (a senior level position), was later forced to apologize for her remarks, telling Apple staff that her comments “were not representative of how I think about diversity or how Apple sees it."

“For that, I’m sorry,” she said in an email. “More importantly, I want to assure you Apple’s view and our dedication to diversity has not changed."

“We deeply believe that diversity drives innovation,” an Apple spokesman told TechCrunch in a statement. “We’re thrilled to welcome an accomplished leader like Christie Smith to help us continue the progress we’ve made toward a more diverse workplace."

In 2017, only 3 percent of Apple’s leaders were black, and women held just 23 percent of tech jobs, according to Fortune. Female leadership stood at 29 percent, Apple said.

“Meaningful change takes time,” the company said in its diversity report. “We’re proud of our accomplishments, but we have much more work to do."

Smith will leave the company at the end of the year. Taking over as VP of inclusion and diversity will be Christie Smith, who spent 17 years as a principal at Deloitte.

She is also a white woman.

 It ain’t racist to say terrible things about Caucasians or European Americans (aka “white people”). It ain’t sexist to say terrible things about Caucasian males. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is not racist.There is no organization that advocates for “white” people because that would be racist.Congressional Black Caucus is not racist.Congressional Hispanic Caucus is not racist.There is no Caucus in the Congress representing the interests of “white” people because that would be racist.Does anybody see a pattern?

So immediately one wonders how many goat herders and camel fuckers or Mexican drug lords apple employ...? Because white people are actually enabled to do the job is not their fault. You might say the system is at fault but that's a different argument. Isn't it wonderful that corporations are making so much money they have the luxury to decide that people who aren't up to the job should be employed to take the place of those most capable? Road to ruin.... I don't like apple's model in any case.Ties you in so fuck 'em.

I did not like apple back in the 80s for the same reason that I don't like them today. Closed systems and proprietary. Almost always had been. Fuck them. Only moment of openness I've seen from Apple was back in the days when some X Apple developers went off on their own and created BeOS and with buying hardware from Apple and selling it with their operating system. Then management changed and scrapped the deal.

Yeah, I was an early adopter back in 1980.  Loved the apple product.  Wrote a spreadsheet program for my dad's business because he was old school, didn't trust that a PC could do what he was doing on a mainfraime, and I couldn't afford to buy the SW for him.  Turned him on his perception.  And then Apple came out with the Mac and closed their system to me by charging for developer tools.  Migrated to MS and never went back to Apple.  I agree... fuck Apple.Anyway, my white dude friends are dropping Apple phones in droves.  They know that they are not wanted.  Fuck Apple.

It's not a matter of whites fighting back. It is those who recognize this is not how it's suppose to play out. Not how it should. I don't know this woman's politics. It appears she has kept an open mind? For that, this 20 yr Apple veteran is not only forced out of her position, but she has been forced out of Apple. "Smith will leave the company at the end of the year"Odd how Apple introduced themselves to their new brand in a Super Bowl commercial that went viral. Use to this day as an example of cookie cutter mindthink. Shot in B&W, the big screen face droning on of nonsense, an audience of same blank faced collective. Apple is them, they are that mindless, blank faced collective. Everyone's mind thinking alike, or perhaps their interpretation of the ad is different than mine?That is worth everyone who values freedom to fight against, but alas...Resistance is futile. Each and every manager at Apple, at corporations around the country who have adapted this type of diversity, will look at this example and have to look deep inside themselves. They need to either fake it or become one of them. The careers they have built relies on it. They're not activists, they have families, lives at stake. The youth, the millennials, who have been programed in college, will advance past those who think like America use to think. Sad, very sad for them, but extremely troubling for America .
