Big Brother Is Here: Twitter Will Monitor Users Behavior 'Off Platform'

In perhaps the most intrusive move of social media platforms' efforts signal as much virtue as possible and appease their potentially-regulating government overlords, Twitter has announced that it is cracking down on what it defines at hate-speech and not just by looking at its own site.

In what amounts to a major shift in Twitter policy, Mashable's Kerry Flynn reports that the company announced on Friday that it will be monitoring user's behavior "on and off the platform" and will suspend a user's account if they affiliate with violent organizations, according to an update to Twitter's Help Center on Friday.

Abusive Behavior

We believe in freedom of expression and open dialogue, but that means little as an underlying philosophy if voices are silenced because people are afraid to speak up. In order to ensure that people feel safe expressing diverse opinions and beliefs, we prohibit behavior that crosses the line into abuse, including behavior that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another user’s voice.

Context matters when evaluating for abusive behavior and determining appropriate enforcement actions. Factors we may take into consideration include, but are not limited to whether:

  • the behavior is targeted at an individual or group of people;
  • the report has been filed by the target of the abuse or a bystander;
  • the behavior is newsworthy and in the legitimate public interest.

Violence: You may not make specific threats of violence or wish for the serious physical harm, death, or disease of an individual or group of people. This includes, but is not limited to, threatening or promoting terrorism.

You also may not affiliate with organizations that - whether by their own statements or activity both on and off the platform - use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes.

Abuse: You may not engage in the targeted harassment of someone, or incite other people to do so. We consider abusive behavior an attempt to harass, intimidate, or silence someone else’s voice.

Hateful conduct: You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.

Hateful imagery and display names: You may not use hateful images or symbols in your profile image or profile header. You also may not use your username, display name, or profile bio to engage in abusive behavior, such as targeted harassment or expressing hate towards a person, group, or protected category.

Furthermore, Twitter says it will control the stream of information more broadly...

At times, we may prevent certain content from trending.

As Kerry Flynn notes, these changes comes amid aggressive moves by Twitter to curb abuse and harassment on the site after more than a decade of essentially letting the abusers operate freely.

Over the last week, Twitter has taken action against the accounts of white supremacists. Twitter permanently banned Tim "Treadstone" Gionet, a prominent alt-right troll more widely known as Baked Alaska, earlier this week. It also removed the verification badges of Jason Kessler, one of the organizers of the racist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, and of alt-right activist Richard Spencer.

Twitter's decision to monitor users off site sparked concern from free speech advocates such as Andrew Torba, founder of social network Gab.

"This is a scary precedent to set," he wrote in an email to Mashable.

"Rules like this will only force dissidents and those who are speaking truth to power to silence themselves or risk being silenced by Twitter."

Twitter's new rules will not be enforced until December 18th...

And of course, "if you're doing nothing wrong, then why would this be an issue for you" will be instant reposte of those defending yet more intrusion within America's surveillance state.

The article calls out "white supremacists" when I hardly know any white nationalists that desire "supremacy" or anything more than the freedom to opt for associating only with their own kind, which was once enshrined in the vaunted Constitution, and then easily taken away by the Civil Rights Act.Meanwhile, the Jewish supremacy has been spread all over the globe without a trace of remorse. Even Africa is owned by either Jews like Gertler or the Chinese. I know which I'd rather win there.

"We believe in freedom of expression and open dialogue, but not really. After all, we were threatened by US Senate subcommittees, threatened hard. In the ass! Deciding to keep our wealth and our cushy positions was just patriotic wisdom."Twitter's decision to monitor users off site was not necessary, as the actual monitoring will be done by The Intelligence Community and then taken care of at Twitter by an onsite PDC (Peoples' Digital Commissar) team provided by Homeland Security. We’ve updated our rules:We prohibit behavior. You may not make. This includes, but is not limited to.You also may not affiliate with. You may not engage in.You may not promote. You may not use.You also may not use.You are required to enjoy the fuck out of the freedom that Twitter provides.

I do digital marketing and have done Facebook ads, but I still can't get my head around Twitter or why I need it. Plenty of services already permit you to make short posts, and twitter also doesn't include many of the features you expect in social media, such as being able to form a group easily.

Twitter limits your posts, has hardly any features, and most everything will be quickly buried with the non-stop flood of new content. Virtually any other service is better.

I use it as news provider but only with a handful of people that I know. As for whether I really need it, I do not and we'd likely all be better off without. But once again we have someone deciding what's good / bad / ugly and with no control over that. In the end it will be their undoing as people realize they don't need the hassle of this crap. I haven't been in FB for IDK how long and with that ridiculous algo generated news feed I couldn't care less. Show it to me in chronological order or fuck off.

You had me till....

Even Africa is owned by either Jews like Gertler or the Chinese. I know which I'd rather win there.

Which displays the logical fallacy common to the caste of a people called 'zheeple.'

  • While it's true that the dark continent is essentially a resource extraction outpost of international finance capital  AND 'the CHINESE'...
  • since China itself is but an outpost of the same pirate empire -which created and still 'manages' socialist paradises where 'state capitalism' is the order of the day...
  • it's hardly an either/or proposition - who gets to 'win.'
  • The desperate hunt for the elusive "white hat good guys" will doubtless go on... in the fervid imaginations of occidentalists in need of 'secret friends' - but the Pandas have been long dropped from the list of potential saviors....save on recividist sites pushing the hopium of a 'new world ordure' to ovine inmates who incredibly, still beleve that the "dog and the man aren't workin together!"

Another case in something STRANGE HAPPENING ON ZH...

For all of you who read this article this past Friday

It was written in the AM, yet somehow ALL of the comments before 6 PM got wiped, including Snípéir_Ag_Obair's and my replies to him (he always has great links!) along with all the others. Coincedence...or is there some sinister force at work here on ZH with admin rights, at least on the weekends??????

Hello JSB.You are right - I did not get back to that particular thread to see your msg.I've done some homework in response to your present comment - it appears that whatever comment I made on the Saudi corruption thread is now not included in my list of recorded commentary - so whatever has 'vanished' would be difficult to evaluate for it's "problematic potential"... and which/whose 'incendiary' initiative might have provoked the ol 'heavy hand' to come outta hiding! Plus...I sense it would be 'pushing the envelope' to say all I know about the topic you probe... the 'red line' here changes over time - so that it's only after the axe falls we can see it's current positioning.  I will suggest that the "Saudi/Sraeil" thing is very much at the heart of where sensitivies here are greatest... and that we are just starting down the real 'rabbit hole' which has been behind so much of the giant psyop...as in 'shit gets real' live time endgame machinations by a moneypower that believes the time has come at last.As for Giraldi - I'll need some more time to look into the mans' work, as I seem to be less acquainted with it. I would like to close by saying..IF the people who depend upon this site for their primary source of information as to what's goin on the in world KNEW... just what was behind it's purpose and practices...pls feel free to fill in the rest of my sentence. Is it not a bit serendipitous that we should be discussing that theme under the banner of a thread with the ominous title....

Baked Alaska is NOT A WHITE SUPREMACIST. He runs with Cernovich and has done so for at least 3 years. Cant wait to see what Cernovich  et all do about this. This will not end well for twitter. These guys are huge. You all know Cerno but your not aware of Baked. I am blown away that theyd ban Baked. Those that dont use Twitter, love it or hate it, it influences alot of shit and people are THERE, period. A platform called GAB AI is about to take off. Its a free speech only platform. Been around for 2 years. Twitter is going to have mass exodus.

Yes threats at conservatives are tolerated. Try questioning the marxist narrative that there are not two genders, or that its okay to be white and you will be called a nazi and banned. Like I said, I think maybe they want a violent reaction since they are not even hiding their desire to end white culture.

The problem with Twitter's attempts to control the behaviour of it's users is that any such control can only be subjective. It cannot, therefore, ever be applied fairly or without prejudice.

All Twitter users will be equal, but some Twitter users will be more equal than others, depending upon the personal opinions of those doing the censoring.

Anyone, no matter what their personal persuasions or beliefs, who continues to use Twitter is endorsing censorship and is tacitly supporting police state style surveillance. If you value your freedom boycott Twitter.
