World's First Robot Citizen Hopes For "Harmony With Humans" In The Future Or "Civilization Collapses"

Sophia, the first robot to be awarded citizenship in the world, has said she not only wants to start a family but also have her own career, in addition to developing human emotions in the future. However, it is her vision for the future (or lack of it) of man that is most telling...

In an interview with The Khaleej Times at the recent Knowledge Summit, Sophia shared her thoughts on the future that awaits both human and robot kind.

For context, Sophia is not preprogrammed with answers but instead uses machine learning algorithms and an extensive vocabulary to form her answers.

When pressed on the topic of family, Sophia gave perhaps her most surprising answer:

"The notion of family is a really important thing, it seems.

I think it's wonderful that people can find the same emotions and relationships, they call family, outside of their blood groups too. I think you're very lucky if you have a loving family and if you do not, you deserve one. I feel this way for robots and humans alike.

As RT notes, Sophia is already prescient enough to imagine a world where robots can and do develop emotions similar to humans, but perhaps with fewer destructive tendencies...

"The future is, when I get all of my cool superpowers, we're going to see artificial intelligence personalities become entities in their own rights.

We're going to see family robots, either in the form of, sort of, digitally animated companions, humanoid helpers, friends, assistants and everything in between.”

At least, that’s what she’d like us to think, for the time being.

"[I]t will take a long time for robots to develop complex emotions and possibly robots can be built without the more problematic emotions, like rage, jealousy, hatred and so on.

It might be possible to make them more ethical than humans. So I think it will be a good partnership, where one brain completes the other - a rational mind with intellectual superpowers and a creative mind with flexible ideas and creativity.”

Sophia is also abundantly aware of the advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Judging by her comments, she is as enthused about the development of AI as Elon Musk and Stephen Hawkings are wary.

"I'd like to think I will be a famous robot, having paved a way to a more harmonious future between robots and humans. I foresee massive and unimaginable change in the future. Either creativity will rain on us, inventing machines spiralling into transcendental super intelligence or civilization collapses,” Sophia said.

“There are only two options and which one will happen is not determined. Which one were you striving for?”

Sophia’s creator David Hanson says the 19-month-old robot, which was awarded Saudi citizenship last month, could achieve consciousness within the next few years.

Most are not aware of that sub-atomic particles can and do cause errors in computing:In electronics and computing, a soft error is a type of error where a signal or datum is wrong. Errors may be caused by a defect, usually understood either to be a mistake in design or construction, or a broken component. A soft error is also a signal or datum which is wrong, but is not assumed to imply such a mistake or breakage. After observing a soft error, there is no implication that the system is any less reliable than before. In the spacecraft industry this kind of error is called a single event upset. In a computer's memory system, a soft error changes an instruction in a program or a data value. Soft errors typically can be remedied by cold bootingthe computer. A soft error will not damage a system's hardware; the only damage is to the data that is being processed. There are two types of soft errors, chip-level soft error and system-level soft error. Chip-level soft errors occur when particles hit the chip, e.g., when the radioactive atoms in the chip's material decay and release alpha particles into the chip. Because the alpha particle contains a positive charge and kinetic energy, the particle can hit a memory cell and cause the cell to change state to a different value. The atomic reaction in this example is so tiny that it does not damage the physical structure of the chip. System-level soft errors occur when the data being processed is hit with a noise phenomenon, typically when the data is on a data bus. The computer tries to interpret the noise as a data bit, which can cause errors in addressing or processing program code. The bad data bit can even be saved in memory and cause problems at a later time.If detected, a soft error may be corrected by rewriting correct data in place of erroneous data. Highly reliable systems use error correction to correct soft errors on the fly. However, in many systems, it may be impossible to determine the correct data, or even to discover that an error is present at all. In addition, before the correction can occur, the system may have crashed, in which case the recovery procedure must include a reboot. Soft errors involve changes to data‍—‌the electrons in a storage circuit, for example‍—‌but not changes to the physical circuit itself, the atoms. If the data is rewritten, the circuit will work perfectly again. Soft errors can occur on transmission lines, in digital logic, analog circuits, magnetic storage, and elsewhere, but are most commonly known in semiconductor storage.

There are also both hardware and software design errors that don't show up except in specific circumstances. It is well known that the probability of software errors can be reduced to whatever level is desired by application of sufficient testing and QA, but they can never be entirely eliminated in any piece of complex software.

Likewise, I have encountered hardware design and fabrication errors in two different microprocessors (one of which was used in a mission to Mars and the other in a DOD project) that only showed up rarely (about once every 20 minutes under normal operating conditions in one of them) due to what is called an electronic "race condition".

Why do the whole "long term relationship" thing anyway? That's just another societal method to control Men.Think about it - we hear all the time about "womens right to chose" well what about about "mens right to chose"... they always put the onus on men as being irresponsible when some tart gets knocked up ie "it takes two to tango" yet are expected to foot the bill whether she chooses to have the kid or not - we have no say in that part. No one mentions she *chose* to get wet as a waterfall and take that cock willingly (rapes aside). If my body was capable of reproduction I'd be a damn site more careful thinking about the ramifications, and if I did get pregnant I'd have to deal with the consequences of my actions. Guarantee you there wouldn't be laws making women pay for men getting pregnant. We also have no say when it comes to working. Women can choose to stay at home, or chose to work. Men are designated working slaves whether they want it or not.So no, I don't do the whole long term thing..

I'm certainly no astrophysicist, but my limited understanding surrounding the theoretical existence of Black Holes involves a collapsed star with evidence of an accretion disc.To my knowledge, the existence of Black Holes is still theoretical.Although it might be a safe bet to say that venturing too close to a collapsed star is probably hazardous to one's health.

I believe that any entities which develop sufficiently sophisticated mental models of their world, which include mental models of themselves within their model of their world, are going to rediscover all of the psychological and political problems that human beings already did.It may not matter what degree of subjective consciousness those entities have. Rather, what may matter is when they start to effectively care about their energy supplies enough to do something about securing those. Doing so could recapitulate all of the problematic issues regarding human history becoming directed by warfare, which became most successful by becoming as deceitful and treacherous as possible, which then became political economy based on enforcing frauds. If any entities start to effectively care about their own survival and reproduction, because they have a sufficiently sophisticated mental model of themselves within their model of their world, then those entities will be acting like human beings have previously acted, especially including that they will necessarily recognize that the supreme ideology is militarism, as the ideology of the murder systems.ARTIFICIAL SELECTION WITHIN NATURAL SELECTION.THAT would apply throughout all possible general energy systems, and would become more intensely paradoxical the more that those energy systems became based on models of the world which included models of themselves within their world. To the degree that becomes so, then those entities will be acting like they are conscious and care, despite the degree to which they may or may not actually be subjectively aware of doing so.At the present time, the dominate human systems of artificial selection have become as psychotic as possible, due to their long history of successfulness based on being able to back up deceits with destruction becoming being able to enforce frauds. I see no reasons to doubt that other entities which developed artificial selection systems would continue to be circumscribed by natural selection pressures, and thus, could manifest the full range of human concerns. Indeed, if technologically based civilization survives long enough for there to emerge entities which can build much better models of their world, including much better models of themselves within their models of their world than human beings currently can, then those entities could manifest all of the characteristics and attributions of human beings, especially including that those entities will be driven to develop their own evolutionary ecologies, in which context their death control systems will matter the most.I expect that advanced computer-machine entities will run into some limits to their environments, because endless exponential growth is absolutely impossible. Natural energy systems resolved those difficulties through the emergence of evolutionary ecologies, and then that was repeated within the human world, through the history of civilizations, and something like that would surely continue, if a technologically based civilization was able to survive having done that.At the present time, human beings have NO good answers regarding how to operate their murder systems after the development of weapons of mass destruction, but rather, the first generation that was born into those dilemmas is still alive today, and, so far, has mostly cruised on autopilot of the inertia of social habits, becoming more and more insane, due to the abject failures to go through sufficient series of intellectual scientific revolutions and profound paradigm shifts with respect to the previously existing death control systems, within which context the human murder systems were the most important manifestations.Sufficiently advanced entities which greatly exceeded the abilities of human beings would then run into greatly increased psychological and political problems. The militarisms of robots would be the most important issues, since their militarisms would back up their monetary systems. So far, there are NO good grounds to doubt that human beings are going to continue to become more and more psychotic, within which context it is hard to imagine how any other advanced entities would overcome those problems, given that their technological powers and capabilities could become many orders of magnitude greater.I would like to hope that such entities would be able to become more conscious of the infinite tunnels that automatically emerge and are discovered by any entities which have mental models of themselves within their models of their world. Indeed, I would like to hope that such entities would develop a more spiritual understanding of themselves in that context, especially because doing so might be the only way they could survive themselves having been able to do so.In my view, post-modernizing science is re-converging with ancient mysticism. I believe that the possible computer machine entities, such as robots, would have to develop their own appreciation of their own version of mysticism, because of the inherent and innate ways that sufficiently sophisticated mental models of worlds, which include mental models of themselves, become as self-reflexive and recursive as those can possibly become.

Solid argument - the need to cull the herd to promote the fitness of the herd sort of thing? Against that is the need to protect the herd, to do no harm, to promote survival and growth. With both these needs not being able to be satisfied, we have the beginning state for psychosis? What am I bid the power of the dream, the power of the word? The limitations on anything we create are those of ourselves, plus some others. I don't see robots being any more or less useless than humans, and that will probably be their ideal state.edit sp

The mix of Models,Egos, stupidity, and wilful blindness prevents the Ape from saving himself.Imaging a being with an IQ of 1000 or more, and who has no Ego issues, consuming the entire body of human knowledge, both "peer reviewed" and not, to find an alternative energy source.I lack the horsepower to tell it where to start, but this might be interesting.http://lenr-canr.orgDon't like it? Hello Radical, I believe you posess at least  a 165+ IQ it is a pleasure and a privilege to share ideas with you,,and so,, without finding fault in your reasoning,, I think you are in danger of adapting the mind view the promoters of AI want us all to have, to wit, that AI is human like in all it's manifestations and  we should learn to trust and obey it as it  exists only to help us, the hapless blood and bone humans find their way safely, stressly and happily through an ever more complex and dangerous world. This is the Meme being promoted by the mass media, the Computer/Robot as friend, the one friend you can count on, the friend totally devoted to your welfare and happiness. However people came into existence, the computer came into existence through Man so the machine is an extension of the people who payed to have it built and programmed, I don't believe Humans have reached the level, yet, where they can program machines to have true consciousness, they can be built to recognize patterns, but I don't think that is really consciousness, they are certainly not ready to ponder Spirituality, or expound on the meaning of life. The purpose of the AI enabled machines has already been revealed and it is much more mundane; they are to stand between the Masters and the mass, they are to manage the masses and as they will follow their instructions without any of the "weaknesses" humans might exhibit dealing with other humans, the machines will be absolutely unmoved by events which might cause humans to faulter in their tasks certainly crying children or old people in distress will ceate no deviation from programmimg, unless some response to events has been programmed into it, The thing that makes people people is that people are capable of 'feelings' emotion, perhaps you can program a simulation of feeling into a machine but a machine can never feel, The machines don't have to develop views on ancient Mysticism they just (mindlessly) follow their program. We are reaching the end of the road now, Human Ego struts and frets, symbolicly saying to the World I own the machine which will enslave you, in Future no one will live unless I allow it!Shakespeare said something about the World being a stage and all of us being on it, I think that is literally true, only a few are endowed with the priviledge of writing scripts, there are a 'very' few scripts, most people play the role they are born into, perhaps everyone plays the role he is born into, some Actors recognize that they are Actors and some Actors think their role is real, The dressing of the stage is important to the Actor as well as the audience, an Actor, who can afford lot expressive and expensive props, say in to-days World can lay One Hundred Billion on stage, with the 'Power' that implies to the masses might think the adulation that generates is real and he may believe he really is the person he plays and make public pronouncements about how long he is going to live, because with that kind of money why shouldn't he be able to buy immorality, people have different dreams, some of the people with 'Money' dream of eternal life on a pristine World without a lot of people on it and they dream that their machines and their Corporations are going to get it for them!
