The Cost Of Illegal Immigration

Authored by Ruthie Blum via The Gatestone Institute,

In his State of the Union address on January 30, US President Donald J. Trump referred to the brutal murder of two 16-year-old girls from Long Island in December 2016 by members of the "savage MS-13 gang," responsible for a spate of other gruesome killings in the area, as well.

Many of these gang members, he explained, had entered the United States illegally. "For decades, open borders have allowed drugs and gangs to pour into our most vulnerable communities," he said.

Calling on Congress "to finally close the deadly loopholes that have allowed... criminal gangs to break into our country," he listed the four pillars of his immigration-reform proposal:

  • A path to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal immigrants who were brought to America by their parents.

  • The construction of a "great wall on the southern border" and enforcement by agents patrolling and securing the border.

  • Ending the visa lottery, "a program that randomly plans out green cards without regard for skill, merit, for the safety of American people."

  • Ending the "current, broken system" of chain migration of distant relatives, and limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children.

Although he did not specify this in his speech, Trump reportedly is seeking $25 billion from Congress to fund the wall. Opponents of the wall have been arguing that illegal immigrants do not commit crimes at a higher rate than legal immigrants or native-born Americans; that illegal immigration has been a boon to the economy, rather than a drain on it; and that the cost both of deportation and a wall far exceeds the benefits of both. These claims are repeatedly voiced by the Trump administration's detractors, as part of their campaign to accuse the president of racism; but what are the facts?

To set the record straight, let us take a look at a number of those that have been obscured or ignored by the media.

As far as the cost of the wall is concerned, a study released in September 2017 by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) reveals that, "At the federal, state, and local levels, taxpayers shell out approximately $134.9 billion to cover the costs incurred by the presence of more than 12.5 million illegal aliens, and about 4.2 million citizen children of illegal aliens." This, the report says, is a nearly $3 billion increase in the cost since 2013. It is also rather more than the single payment of $25 billion that it will cost to build a wall – five and a half times more, and every year.

The same goes for the cost of deporting illegal immigrants. According to Steven A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies,

"...The average cost of a deportation is much smaller than the net fiscal drain created by the average illegal immigrant," in part due to the fact that "illegal immigrants overwhelmingly have modest levels of education — most have not completed high school or have only a high school education...creating more in costs for government than they pay in taxes."

The question of the rates of criminality among illegal aliens vs. those of legal immigrants and American-born citizens has been examined by John R. Lott, Jr., president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, using Arizona's prison population as a microcosm for study. According to Lott, the ability to measure the crime-rate among illegal immigrants in the U.S. has been difficult, due to many factors, including the lack of a national data base and "primitive" methodology – such as "simple, cross-sectional analysis to see whether areas with higher immigrant populations have higher crime rates," and "a purely time series approach... look at the United States as a whole and note that crime has decreased since 1990 as immigration has increased." The advantage of the Arizona Department of Corrections study, Lott says, is that

"over our 32.5-year period, we know each prisoner who entered the prison system, their criminal convictions history, and whether he is a documented or undocumented immigrant. The only mystery is why this type of data has not been utilized until now."

Peter Kirsanow wryly solved the mystery in National Review, writing:

"Unfortunately, almost every public official not named Jeff Sessions guards against disclosure of illegal-immigrant crime data more tenaciously than disclosure of nuclear launch codes."

According to Lott, whose research spans 1985-2017:

"Arizona's prison population data allow us to compare undocumented immigrants' share of the prison population with their estimated share of the state population...For the first time, we break down the data to examine differences between US citizens, undocumented immigrants, and legal permanent residents. One advantage of using convictions rather than just reported crimes is that convictions depend on a 'beyond a reasonable doubt' standard of evidence and thus are much less likely to count innocent people."

The findings are unequivocal, as the following summary illustrates:

"Undocumented immigrants are at least 142% more likely to be convicted of a crime than other Arizonans. They also tend to commit more serious crimes and serve 10.5% longer sentences, more likely to be classified as dangerous, and 45% more likely to be gang members than U.S. citizens...There are dramatic differences between in the criminal histories of convicts who are U.S. citizens and undocumented immigrants...

"[Y]oung undocumented immigrants commit crime at twice the rate of young U.S. citizens. These undocumented immigrants also tend to commit more serious crimes. If undocumented immigrants committed crime nationally as they do in Arizona, in 2016 they would have been responsible for over 1,000 more murders, 5,200 rapes, 8,900 robberies, 25,300 aggravated assaults, and 26,900 burglaries."

These numbers do not even include the cost to American taxpayers of the toll taken on America's children by illegally imported drugs. Although available information on this is at best spotty, the key finding from the DEA's 2017 National Drug Threat Assessment is that the "most commonly reported greatest drug threat was heroin, at 44.1 percent of law enforcement responses... This was followed by 29.8 percent of respondents indicating methamphetamine was their greatest drug threat, 9.3 percent reporting controlled prescription drugs..."

This tells us something about the extent of the problem, but not enough. The 2010 drug-threat assessment, released a year after the previous administration took office, revealed that,

"From January through November 2009, U.S. seizures of illegal drugs in transit exceeded 1,626 metric tons, indicating that DTOs succeed in moving several thousand tons of cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, heroin, and MDMA into the United States annually. There are unique smuggling and transportation methods..."

In 2015, included in the DEA's drug-threat assessment was the fact that drug overdoses killed more people in the United States than car accidents or guns. As was noted by the BBC at the time, "Many of these drugs are smuggled in large volumes by drug cartels..."

The late Democrat Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts." His successors in Congress would do well to remember this while debating the issue of illegal immigration. They certainly need to keep it in mind when voting on the administration's proposed plan.

Most Americans underestimate how much illegal aliens cost us each year. Looking at the Heritage Foundation study, you will find that the average illegal household pays about $10,334 annually in taxes. The disparity lies in the fact that the average illegal household receives around $24,721 in government benefits (this includes direct benefits, means-tested benefits, education benefits, population-based services, interest and other spending, and pure public goods expenditures) annually. For comparison, the average households with college-educated heads received $24,839 in government benefits while paying $54,089 in taxes. Now, looking at these figures, we can conclude that the average household of illegals costs taxpayers $14,387 per annum. The Heritage Foundation estimates that there are 3,444,955 households of illegals in the US, containing “no more than” 12,708,875 illegal immigrants. This estimate is flawed, however, because it is based off of a census study conducted in the year 2001. It’s strange how immigrants flood into our country and hop the border in droves, yet the amount of illegal immigrants has stayed roughly the same… A more apt estimate would be the one conducted by Ann Coulter in her book Adios, America! in which she cites a study by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Barlett and Steele that estimates an average of 3 million illegal aliens are coming in yearly–enough to fill 22,000 Boeing 737-700 airliners. Coulter also cites a study Fred Elbel done in 2007 that estimates there were 20 million illegal immigrants residing in the US in 2005.

Taking these new figures, we can calculate that there are close to 50 million illegal immigrants currently in the US. However, since I understand these studies are just estimates; I will use a more conservative estimate of 35 million. This new number of illegals is close to 3.5x the Heritage Foundation’s estimate, so we arrive at 12,057,343 households of illegals. AII of these households are costing US taxpayers $14,387 per annum. Multiply these two numbers and you get the cost of illegal immigration to the US: $173,468,986,547.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) contractor, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) completed 651 of nearly 652 miles of fencing mandated by Congress in 2005, which was a part of the DHS’ Secure Border Initiative (SBI). The price per mile (PPM) ranged from $400,000 to $15.1 million, for an average of $3.9 million PPM. The USA has close to 2,000 miles bordering Mexico and other areas illegal aliens typically trek though. Assuming the best option is the option for $15 million PPM, it would cost taxpayers around $30 billion to build a comprehensive wall. The price to build a wall that would last a lifetime is less than 17% of the yearly cost of illegal immigration. The choice is extremely clear.

The areas mentioned are not the only areas in which we would save. If we decided to deport all illegal aliens, we would save the $173 billion that is spent yearly on the illegal aliens. This would allow us to increase the border patrols budget by $15 billion–a more than 100% increase–$10 billion towards defense spending, $50 billion towards paying back the national deficit (or $60 billion; whatever), all while cutting taxes by 2.5% across the board. In addition, close to 29.3 million jobs would be open. This number comes from multiplying the amount of illegal aliens by 89% (the amount over the age of 18), and then multiplying that number by 94.5% (accounting for just Obama’s fake unemployment rate in May 2015). With the amount of job openings caused by deportation, everyone drawing unemployment in the US would be able to find a job. And there would be close to 21 million jobs left, which would allow for an extraordinary amount of economic growth and would cause a massive surge in the Labor Force Participation Rate, which is seemingly lacking. When US citizens fill those jobs, the government will see a huge leap in tax revenue. The average US citizen pays close to 30% in taxes on their average $44,888 salary. The average citizen pays approximately $13,466 in taxes per annum to the government. Multiplying this by 31.3 million (the amount of jobs that now pay income tax to the US government) gives us $421.5 billion. Allocating these funds could give us $50 billion for infrastructure repair, $10 billion for education, $15 billion for defense spending (or, again, no more than we’re spending now at all), $150 billion to pay back the national debt, and would allow us to lower taxes again, this time 5% across the board.

Freeing up all these jobs would allow us to completely cut all unemployment benefits, which would discontinue FUTA (6%) as well as SUTA (5.82%) taxes on business, while saving taxpayers 108.5 billion USD annually. 10 billion of these newfound funds could go to paying back the national deficit, all while cutting taxes yet again, another 2.5% across the board.

In conclusion, building a border wall and deporting all illegal immigrants would allow us to spend per annum: $15 billion on border patrol, $25 billion in defense spending, $50 billion for infrastructure repair, $10 billion for education, and $210 billion towards paying back the national deficit–in addition to their current budgets–while cutting taxes nearly 12% on business, and 10% for citizens.

I dont care how many illegals there are, the numbers in this piece are bullshit.   Gatestone should stick to skewering the muslim horde, about which I agree with them, and not the general immigration issue, about which I apparently do not.  There are some costs to immigration (like some lower wage americans getting priced out) and there are some benefits (like supplementing an otherwise too slow to grow population).

It is obvious to a thinking person that in the aggregate the benefits outweigh the costs and represent one of americas secret weapons in the economic race.  There are issues surrounding it obviously  Having an absurdly low level of legal immigration makes the inevitable overflow illegal, which is a bad idea.  There are some lumpiness issues where too many come from one region.  So build a wall, no problem with that.  But this piece is utter garbage

Fuck you and your "too slow to grow population".   The idea that a country must increase it's population continuously, without pause, and forever, is jaw-droppingly blind.  To couple that with the idea that a "thinking person" must have this belief just adds to the absurdity of the statement.

Everywhere in nature, we see populations wax and wane due to food supply, disease, and predator population.  I can't believe that I am forced to even write the words, but I will.  Human populations should be allowed to increase slower, or even decrease, when the environmental or economic or cultural forces cause the breeding population to slow reproductive rates.

This notion that countries must be stuffed with immigrants, replacing the k-selected populace with r selected breeding stock, is a notion that must be fought back against by truly thinking people.  We are not cattle on a farm, no matter how much you may view us as that.

Even if you insist on viewing us as cattle whose breeding rate must be increased by governmental policy, I ask you this.  What exactly is your end game here?  Surely you understand that this strategy can't be implemented forever.  When will you say your cattle have bred enough, and what will you do with the excess when they keep breeding after that point?  What culling method will you choose, I wonder?

Several Wall Street banks have done research for an accurate estimate of the number of illegals and as said above, it's at least 30 million.

The banks used hard data like money transfers back to Mexico to get their numbers, not some fake numbers that dems and far left crazies come up with. Read Ann Coulter's book; she also details much of the research which confirms these whopping high numbers.

1) round them up;

2) send them back;

3) build the wall; and,

4) lets have strict immigration controls.

I know several well-educated people overseas who applied legally and are waiting patiently. They will add alot to our society. Why should we automatically let illegals get citizenship when they already broke the law to get here?!

That is the classic BS LIB knee jerk response to the immigrant issue to say things like:  "a county founded by illegal immigrants".  This is a HUGE crock of sh*t for many reasons:

1. What does that have to do with letting 12 million dirt poor people on the lowest run of Mexican society pour into this country illegally?

2. When the pilgrims hit the shores in the 1600's the world was a very, very, very different place then it is today.  The natives were hundreds of different tribes had no official country or border.  Don't look at the 1600's with your 2018 mind.

3. The waves if European immigrants that came to this country in the 19th and 20th century were LEGAL.

4. This country was built from scratch what it is today by European immigrants.  What is wrong with closely guarding borders and letting who you want in?

The LIB's always fight very hard to hide welfare and crime data broken out by race.  LIB's would love to get rid of breaking this data out by race, so there would be no way for conservatives to prove points with data.

For example, whenever there is a police shooting of a black male.  Some things you NEVER hear from the LIB media:

1. Black males are 6% of the US population and commit 52% of all the homicides (and similar proportion of other violent crimes)

2. Whites are 27X more like to be the victim of a violent crime at the hands of blacks vs. vice versa (27:1 ratio!!!).

The left media always makes minorities out to be the "victim" when that is complete BS and we all know it.  Blacks and Hispanics are responsible for about 75% of the violent crime in the USA.   If Chicago hypothetically became 100% white and Asian tomorrow, the violent crime rates would drop by about 98%.  You could walk anywhere at 2am with no fear.

As a card carrying member of the Cherokee Nations, I am compelled to set you straight. The native indian tribes of what is now North America were always very decentralized and never formed a set of laws that could be codified and agreed upon pursuant to the concept of immigration. Therefore, the Pilgrims cannot be categorized as "Illegal Aliens". Your argument is incoherent and invalid.

.....’founded by “illegal”immigrants’.... Really?

‘Immigration’ the legal way does not constitute ILlegal. Furthermore, people who immigrated then wished to assimilate, learn the English language, and came only because of the possibilty of a better life, not a guarantee.

They had no housing, welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, special language training, etc.  In fact, people such as my mother who had English as a second language lived on muddy dirt roads without electricity. All of these improvements-roads, healthcare, electricity in rural areas, etc- represent another gift provided to present day illegal aliens by the previous taxpayers, some of who were previously legal aliens.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with not "reproduc[ing] fast enough."  America was just fine 50 fewer million people ago, and 50 fewer million people before that.  Is there some arbitrary number of Americans that is required to make America great?

Endless population growth as an economic model has one purpose -- to feed the bankers and their debt based economy.  I suppose at some point if people literally stopped having kids it would become a problem to having a developed economy, but having around 2 kids per couple is hardly a crisis (unless you're a banker).

I agree.  Also, if the day comes when you determine that you really do need to increase your population, it is easy to attract quality immigrants that share your values and really will make your country stronger.  It is easy to do this, that is, if you have not already turned your country into a 3rd world shithole by allowing non-merit based immigration to swamp your culture and genes with those of people who had already turned their home countries into 3rd world shitholes.

Screw your tired and your huddled masses.  There are too many of them in the world for them all to be brought to any one country.  If you want to help them, help them where they currently reside.  It's more efficient and doesn't give away your country to a competing culture.  Your country is yours to live in and protect for your children.  It is not yours to give away.

Back in the day when this country was founded it was done so by hard working immigrants that had to do so to survive. Big difference now by allowing illegal immigrants to come to America and live off the backs of those of us who are already overtaxed and burdened. Not to mention the fact that many of these illegal immigrants are being exploited and brainwashed into voting for the lying, cheating, demoncratic arm of a communist ideology.

I totally agree.  Why does the USA population have to always grow?  Why not let the country stay white and let it shrink in population?  Japan shrinks in pop and doesn't destroy their culture and import tens of millions immigrants of a different race like the USA does.  South Korea?  Taiwan?  China?  You will NEVER see them import masses of immigrants of other races!  Never!  Only white liberals are stupid enough to destroy themselves like this.

Problem is our politics in this country are controlled by GDP growth and Wall Street.  So to keep wall street happy and GDP growth pumping, white western democracies sell out and destroy their race and country with mass 3rd world immigration (USA, Canada, NZ, Aus, Western Europe).

True. The State Department has all kinds of refugee programs which circumvent the immigration quota. The programs cost are not in this article.

The cost of US support for illegal and legal immigration is much higher than this article alluded to. If all the programs, illegal and legal, it's more like $300 billion because of state and federal spending.

What's strange, there is no war in Kenya, but Kenyans are refugees for the State Department refugee program. There's an army of leftist being paid by the US government to manage and take care of the refugees. US cities have been designated United Nations Resettlement Cities and the UN has more legal say in the settlement of refugees than the states. Proven in court, so the US government dumps the 3rd world on states, then there is a limit of the amount of time and money the US government will spend, then the states have to pick up the tab. But I'm sure all of this was explained by MSM television which many believe educates them properly. They come on these boards parroting the MSM mantra.

P.S. when my wife and I were both working we easily paid 60K in taxes. That was on an income of less than 200K.

The total oultay of the federal govt for 2017 was $3.65 Trillion ( .  The population of the US is about 327 million (  Since we run a deficit every year it would be unfair to expect people to use the total 3.65 Trillion for an estimate of how much each American owes so I will use the amount that came in $3.21 Trillion.

That means each American owes the USG $9,817 for 2017.  That's $39,268 for a family of 4.  If anyone you know paid less than $9,817 in all their federal payments last year, they need to go.

Good essay. I wrote last week it was over 30 million illegals and the US government number of 11 million is wrong.

Do we really know exactly how many came in during the Obama Open Borders? Remember the armies of unaccompanied children? Many said drug cartels were flooding the border to distract border enforcement.

The left's war on America has used a network of media and think tanks to create a false narrative on a host of issues. We have media that will lie, think tanks will lie, politicians will lie and they even have scientists who faked research and data to lie, all they do is force us to live in a delusion of their making.

It was cool to be a communist in the Obama era. it was an over reaction to Bush II. How long will we hold to these false narratives? Is it because if the TV tells you what to think, you must parrot your programming, television programming. The TV lies.

Why do so many people hate illegal messicans ?

Easy : self-explanatory, notice the letters spelling " mess ".

Why do so many people hate muzzies ?

Easy : They do not belong in Western civilization. They are mid-eastern cultists who want infidels dead.

Why does everybody hate joos ?

Easy : Joos are loathsome greedy hypocrites who are inside-out nigs, use messicans for inflationary fraud & undermining White America.  joos are the same as muzzscum muzzies & equally tribal / afflicted yet several deviations smarter although flat-out obnoxious to exponential degrees. Wait, didn't many members of the Gatestone Institute sell endless wars in the Middle East which have resulted in huge numbers of refugees seeking to immigrate here?   Not that I disagree with them about the immigration problem, but they conveniently gloss over their prominent role in causing it and so should probably STFU about it.
