Apple Shipped More Watches Than Switzerland In Q4 2017

Despite the fact that the Apple Watch is consistently playing second (or third) fiddle to the iPhone in terms of public attention, the evidence suggesting that Apple has yet another hit product on its hands is piling up.

According to estimates by market research firm Canalys, the Apple Watch had its best quarter ever in Q4 2017. Driven by the release of the Series 3 model including (optional) LTE support, Apple shipped 8 million watches between October and December, bringing its total for the year to more than 18 million units.

As Statista's chart illustrates, that puts Apple ahead of the entire Swiss watch industry (think Rolex, Swatch etc.) for the quarter, supporting the company’s claims that the Apple Watch became the top-selling watch in the world some time in 2017.

For all of 2017, BI reports that the Swiss exported more watches than Apple shipped, and the Chinese still make far more watches than anyone. But as the data indicates, Apple is rapidly gaining ground.

I wonder how much APPL is domiciled in Switzerland?

Ohh I forgot, you pay to store fiats in Swiss banks.

Remember that yuuge APPL bond issue in '14?  I wonder who underwrote that issuance?

You get payed to borrow francs from the Swiss banks.

Is this supposed to be an Influential Metric or something ? I'm old enough to remember when LED watches were being sold for thousands of dollars and eventually showed up in clear plastic buckets on the counter at my local Beer shop for 99 cents a unit. The same thing with Electric calculators, Cassette Players and all the rest of the Toy's.

That's where the Apple watch thing is going. 99 cents at the dollar store because it's just a toy.

No comparison to a Swiss jewelry masterpiece. It's like comparing a High School graduation rental tuxedo to a hand built Saville Row suit. What a Bullshit thread for ZH to do. Going down the shitter, they are.

A Swiss watch will last more than a life time, and retain value.

Apple products only last until the next software upgrade, when you throw them in the bin. Thanks Apple for fucking my ipad, I've gladly thrown it out.

We are now an Apple free household, no more ishit software.

I don't use the Apple watch for much.  But running a business, the combination of my iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch are absolutely ESSENTIAL for my day to day operations.  Being able to answer my phone without pulling it out of my pocket and holding it up to my ear has increased my productivity.  I can keep working on whatever it is I'm working on and don't have to mess with my phone.

I can also listen to my voicemails using the watch, check the weather, be notified of texts (and glance at them real quick as they come in without taking out my phone so I know if it's super important or not), it notifies me if I've been sitting too long (I have a hard time remembering to take breaks because I'm so focused when working), and it vibrates when I'm supposed to turn when I'm using my GPS a little before the voice prompt to give me enough time to get over.

These are all small things, but they've really helped improve the way I run my business and I'd be lost without my watch.  The Apple watch is something you laugh at and think "who the fuck needs such a stupid thing?" until you actually use it.  Now I will admit that if I wasn't running a business, I probably wouldn't own one.  But now that I have one, I'll NEVER be without one again.

My watch, iPhone, and AirPods sync together so I'll get a call, answer it with my watch, and the call will go through my AirPods.  I don't listen to music on my AirPods.  I just use them for calls.  They come in their own little charging case and while one is charging, I'll use the other one.  The batteries only last 2 hours or so, so it's a good thing I have the charging case.  But you can't blame Apple for this.  These AirPods are SUPER TINY, and super tiny devices have super tiny batteries.

That's a good thing. Apple is good for graphics, but lost when it comes to technical graphics<

As a trader, I chew through lots of CPU's, honestly. I melt 2-3 laptop CPU/GPU's annually.

Cheap H/P's work best. Apple is for FAGS, when it comes to trading.

I can use old equipment for linux and run WINE. APPLE sucks, and is overpriced/

Most trading platforms aren't even compatible without yuuuge code, or plug-ins.

I saw somebody with an Apple Watch once, so who's buying the other 7,999,999 watches ?

These figures could be like record sales, where they count all the ones shipped to shops and the artists gets an award for the most record sales to shops.

Apple shipping more watches than Rolex sounds about right.  Anyone who's been trying to get their hands on any Rolex professional model will attest to this, myself included.  In terms of Rolex professional models, it's been really fucking hard to find anything the past 6 months.  Authorized Dealer stock has all but dried up as Rolex always budgets/limits how many of each model they put out based on the economy and demand forecasted the previous year.  Well, their production fell way short of the demand in 2017, and as Christmas came around, pretty much everything dried up.  Now dealers are slowly getting in new stock for 2018, but as soon as it comes in, someone snaps it up.  It doesn't last long in the showcases like they used to.  Gone too are the discounts on these things because if demand is high, if you don't want to pay the MSRP, the next person will.  Grey Market Rolex dealers are having a field day as they're the only ones in town with the stock and it's all inflated by at least 20%.  Interestingly, demand for other Swiss brands is plummeting.  Omega has no interest, Breitling is plummeting, and the rest are mid-tier shitters.  The only other ones doing relatively well are Patek and Audemars Piguet, but that's only on a few of their models.  The rest are dogs.

Rule number 36, never carry a 2.4GHz tranceiver.

In real life, I always find someone carrying a phone. I bribe em 100% of the time.
Eat a raw APPLE, carrot and beet every day to keep from having a heart attack.

My wife bought me the Apple Watch a couple of years ago. Used it a handful of times then left it sit on the shelf. Need charging every day and was hard to use with cycling gloves on.

Its main fault was that when wearing it, I just couldn't get past feeling like I was slowly morphing into a caricature of a human being. #PeakApple.

Apple sold the ugliest square watch the world has seen while neglecting their computing line which has now become an eccentric collection of obsolete overpriced curios.

I'm not going to buy a shitty watch Tim!

STILL no decent lightweight magsafe laptop with USB ports and a decent screen. WTF?

Only a few things matter for men. Their watch, their shoes, and their tie and belt. The rest can be garbage. A good mechanical watch is an absolute necessity in life. I feel badly for anyone who wishes to be taken seriously who is wearing an I watch.
