Ron Paul: Gun Control Won't Solve The Problem - Let's Look Beyond Politics

Authored by Ron Paul via The Ron Paul Institute for Peace & Prosperity,

Another terrible school shooting took place in Parkland, Florida last week and unfortunately many politicians and pundits have used the tragedy – as they often do – to push their own agenda. Many will use the tragedy to argue that Americans should be prohibited from owning guns. As if anti-gun laws would dissuade a disturbed or violent individual intent on causing harm. Those intent on mass murder don’t obey gun laws.

It’s unfortunate that while many are quick to demand that guns be taken away from peaceful Americans, they don’t seem to have much to say about guns when they’re in the hands of government authorities shooting innocent people. If we need any gun control, it is to get control of the guns in the hands of thousands of government employees who use them against innocent people with impunity.

For example, why do those calling for more gun control remain silent when armed federal agents raid Amish farms to stop them from selling raw milk? This shows the hypocrisy of those who call for restrictions on private firearms ownership while supporting the use of government violence as a means of controlling our lives.

Unfortunately there are many key questions lost in the race to score political points from the shooting.

Why does it always seem that the shooter in these mass killings has been on some kind of psychotropic drugs? As the New American magazine pointed out this week, at least ten high profile mass shootings have been committed by individuals who “were either on — or just recently coming off of — psychiatric medications.” The young killer in Florida was no different. According to his aunt, he had been on these medications to treat mental problems.

Why is no one questioning these medications – all of which come with labels warning of horrific side effects? Perhaps one reason they are ignored is that the pharmaceutical industry spends billions of dollars lobbying Congress.

Also, how is it possible that the FBI once again missed so many obvious clues that a violent person intent on causing massive harm to others was about to strike? Is the FBI actually this incompetent, or perhaps its focus was in other areas -- like meddling in our own elections by presenting “evidence” they knew was flawed to the FISA court to get permission to spy on the Trump campaign?

We’ve heard many stories of how alert FBI field agents tried to alert their bosses before 9/11 that foreigners were taking flight lessons but were not interested in learning how to land the planes.

Is giving the federal government more power to spy on us – as they demand – the answer to stop these terrible crimes? Hardly!

Those who think that giving federal authorities greater surveillance powers might prevent mass shootings should consider that the FBI has been alerted that the latest school shooter had made Facebook posts and YouTube comments talking about his intention to be, as he put it, “a professional school shooter.” But the Bureau failed to properly investigate the tips. If the FBI fails to stop someone who openly boasts about their intentions on social media why should we believe that giving them the power to snoop on every American would increase our safety?

We cannot stop tragedies like this by banning guns. We need to look seriously into the psychotropic drugs that more and more Americans are being prescribed. We need to demand that our elected Representatives demand a real day of reckoning at the FBI. We need to keep focused and ignore those who politicize such events.

Need to ban mention of these episodes in the media. They do it for suicides because of the copy-cat phenomenon, why not for school shootings?

"There is a significant evidence-base demonstrating that media reporting of suicides is linked to copycat suicides among youth and young adults under 24 years of age. Suicidologists, public health officials, researchers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and news media professionals with the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have provided specific guidelines for the media to report suicide. There is evidence in the literature that implementation of guidelines for media reporting of suicide actually decreases the rate of copycat suicides and the incidence of suicide. Although guidelines exist, most journalists are unaware of the impact of reporting suicide with regard to copycat suicides. They are often unacquainted with or do not follow the guidelines. For the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA) to have a Policy Paper on media reporting guidelines, it is necessary to establish a collaborative approach between health professionals and the media in order to promote a non-reinforcing attitude toward suicide without increasing stigma towards those with mental health problems. Since media often call psychiatrists to comment on suicide, it is crucial for psychiatrists to have this knowledge readily available. These requests can be an opportunity for educating the media and ultimately saving live"

From an earlier discussion today about school safety and gun control:

Felt the need to get this message up to the front:

Normalcy Bias  aliens is here Tue, 02/20/2018 - 10:59 Permalink

They're exposing the FACT that this debate has absolutely nothing to do with keeping children safe. These are the very same people who will protest in support of Late Term Abortion, aka the MURDER of children.

They WANT these shootings to occur so they can exploit the emotional reaction to forward the true agenda of firearm confiscation.

Don't be so naive to think that it was just coincidence that this most recent, FBI warned shooter wasn't stopped, either.

U.S. Attorney Eric Fast and Furious Holder announcing a public campaign to "really brainwash people into thinking about guns in a vastly different way."

You're right about the psychotropics, Dr. Paul.  But, there's an even greater villain in our current malaise.  Through their control of all major media and institutions of higher learning, the (((shapers of culture))) have had a monopoly on the visions, sounds and ideas which formulate our perceptions of reality since the end of World War II.  This incredible mind-control power has been used maliciously to alter the national psyche and obliterate what was once an ensconced Christian moral tradition amongst the indigenous white citizens of this... and all other Western lands.  It has also been used to promote the unnatural tenets of feminism, single-motherhood, the blessings of unlimited Third World immigration, the wonders of alternative homosexual lifestyles and a myriad of other newly discovered benisons to our glorious civilization.

If there is ANYTHING we need to take a closer look at, it is this unaccountable group who exude their poisonous secretion of lies upon an incredibly naive and trusting fold of sheeple.

What is the real reason he posted on Jootube that he was a "a professional school shooter"?

Why would you put it that way?

In previous events the perps would say something more along the line of: "i"m going to shoot up so and so place"

Why label yourself a professional?

Did he suspect he was being groomed, was he subconsciously trying to let us in on something?

Is this why the fbi ignored the tip since it was known within the fbi he was to become a patsy?

To me this is a very strange way of describing yourself. Has anyone else  seen this with prior attempts, successful or not?

Lately I've been wondering why Diane Fienstien was ordered to shut up when she tried to reintroduce the 90's era assault weapons ban last year. She tried to introduce the bill in Congress, made a big stink in the press/tv, then bam, nothing.

Too many conspiracy thoughts too little time.

Ron is being too kind to the fbi by listing only two explanations for their failure and leaving out a third, which I believe fits best: that third explanation goes something like this: they were informed but intentionally ignored the threat (for the purpose to which Ron alludes - to score political points for their side and bring amendment nullification day just a little closer.

Here's the saddest conclusion of it all. Today, with the Internet available, young people have this alternative information easily available through the very phones and other digital devices they claim they mastered far better than us aging stogies! Instead, they're fiddle-farting away the most precious asset of all; TIME! It damn near makes me puke to watch their sheer ignorance. Such a fucking shame!

Yeah Bach! Me and you.  We can control all of the major media and institutions of higher learning.

We can control the entire world.  We'll gas the homosexuals and all of the other undesirables.

We'll create a glorious civilization and be rid of the poisonous secretion of lies.

We going to free the incredibly naive and trusting fold of sheeple.  They're going to worship us.

They'll Sieg Heil us for eternity!

If politicians are concerned about gun control, why do they never mention the tons upon tons of weapons the US military abandons in war-torn regions around the world, or global arms sales, or military adventures?

If they were sincere in their apparent strong opposition to firearms, would they not be in universal opposition?

ALL but a handful of Mass Shooters are 18-21, and are on SSRI's or need to be, and got OFF.

IF YOU Can't buy booze at 18,why allow semi auto sales to 18-19-20 yr olds?.

Makes ZERO sense.

PASS that as a Felony 10yrs, and shootings will be cut by 80-90%.(that is, IF the DEMS are really serious about wanting to STOP the slaughter of the LAMBS.

PS: His 17yr old brother is in a mental facility NOW, and was PUT there INVOLUNTARILY.

Yes, yes. It's not as if 18-20 year olds can't get booze and illegal drugs now. We could get alcohol back in my day while we were still in high school, same with illegal drugs like weed.

If your gonna limit 18-20 year olds from drinking and buying firearms how about we limit their ability to serve in the military till they're 21.

At 18 you can join the services and be taught to use all types of military hardware and be sent overseas to use it on people you really had no beef with until you joined up.

I don't think the students afraid of being murdered at school can be accused of pushing their own agenda when they call for an end to easy on-demand gun availability.

Oh wait they sure as hell are.
