Europe To Retaliate With Tariffs On Harley, Bourbon & Blue Jeans; HOG Tumbles

While earlier Europe said that it would disclose its trade war retaliation strategy no sooner than March 5, moments ago Reuters floated its latest trial balloon reporting that the European Union is considering applying a 25% tariffs on roughly $3.5 billion of imports from the United States should Trump execute his plan steel and aluminium tariffs.

While the European Commission has said it would respond "firmly" to proposed U.S. import duties, it also warned it would join others in a challenge at the World Trade Organization and consider safeguard measures, last deployed in 2002, to guard against steel and aluminium being diverted to Europe from elsewhere if U.S. tariffs come in.

Separately, the WSJ reports that the EU will target motorcycles, and Harley Davidson in particular, bourbon and blue jeans in retaliation.

The "bloc will react to the proposed U.S. steel action with tariffs on motorcycles (Harley-Davidson), bourbon whiskey and blue jeans,” WSJ reporter William Mauldin cites EU President Jean-Claude Juncker as saying in Twitter post.

Juncker told TV journalists in Hamburg that Europe needs trade policy that is able to defend, and "we will not be naive," according to Juncker’s spokeswoman Mina Andreeva’s tweet.

While Europe's response to US bourbon had been leaked previously, the attack on Harley Davidson is new, and with its base in Wisconsin, some have suggested this is an attempt to target swing states.

The response in HOG stock was immediate.

That said, with just 6,400 HOG employees, the impact will likely be modest.

Hey, if it means them saving European BMW motorcycle jobs, more power to them.  We must begin to think NATIONALISTICALLY... not Globalistically.  The latter serves the .01%... the former serves the 99.99%.  We must, as sovereign countries, do what is best for our own people.  Why is this such an alien concept?  Oh, yeah... that's right, because we're all ruled by alien (((INTERNATIONALISTS))).

Large MC import tariffs...

E.U. 6%
U.S. 2.4%

Once your import Harley-Davidson arrives at the European port, the first thing you will have to do get it released by the local customs authority. The amount of import duty you will have to pay is as follows:

6% for motorcycles with a engine capacity exceeding 250cc
8% for motorcycles with an engine capacity to 250cc

Before you decide to import a motorcycle into the United States,

You will be required to pay up to 2.4% duty, which will be assessed based on the purchase price or blue book value.…

HOG has been in decline for awhile now. Everybody who wants to pay $25,000 for a toy already has. I won't pay that much for my next truck, that I can drive EVERY DAY.

I see used Harley's for sale on every street corner. Keep telling yourselves that a new Harley is a good investment. Hehe haha hoho...

Can't make omelets without breaking eggs.

The path the US is STILL on is unsustainable; 2009 was our first real chance to change direction.

2018 may well be too little too late...but at least the can kicking is stopping in tiny, but noticeable, ways.

The need to "break eggs" isn't Trumps fault; he's just getting the ball rolling now rather than later.

Exactly! No choice, unless you want to go completely under.

Consumers in North America and Europe are getting deeper and deeper in debt as are their nations. The international multinationals and the Zio financial community have got richer and richer with huge their huge investments and massive offshoring of Western technology and jobs over the years to Communist China, which government they engineered into power after WWII.  Each US globalist administration from Nixon to Obama has assured the American people that Chinese development would be good for business and consumers.   When the offshoring became a concern the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations assured the American people that only the grunt laboring-type jobs Americans did not want to do were being off-shored while the more advanced and technical jobs would remain at home. Now, what do we see? More and more manufacturing, industrial, clerical, design, engineering and high tech jobs and entire industries being off-shored particularly to China because of their negligible labor costs and their virtual absence of any reasonable regulations. What is the economic result? Trillions in trade deficits, meaning that Western nations continue to go further and further into debt to nations which ignore all human rights and labor conventions, all in the bullshit name of free trade, which in reality is nothing but greed trade for an exclusive international community of elitists with no real regard for the nations they reside in and milk.

Yes, protect and rebuild American industries with the tariffs collected.

Did a rough estimate of the 2017 total revenue per unit sold in Europe:

42.550 units sold in 2017

HD motorcycles and price list for Europe in 2017 (see:

01) Harley Davidson FLHXS Street Glide = 31.000 €

02) Harley Davidson XL 1200X Forty Eight = 14.200 €

03) Harley Davidson FLHRC Road King = 28,500 €

04) Harley Davidson XL 1200 CX Roadster = 14.500 €

06) Harley Davidson FLSS110 Softail Slim = 26.800 €

07) Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob = 16.700 €

08) Harley Davidson XL 1200X Forty Eight = 44.500 €

Assuming an average per unit price of 22.025 € (I couldn't find the unit sales for each type of motocycle), that translates to total revenue of 937.163.750 €, or $

While I agree in principle with your point, I don't know where your numbers came from. They are way too low.

OK, I feel bad for Harley employees, but man, do I hate fucking Harley's. You're exactly right, they're nothing more than a boomer status symbol. "Look at me, I'm a tiny tough guy biker wanna-be." And don't give me the "Loud pipes save lives" bullshit. Should read "Loud pipes just shows what an ignorant, self-obsessed asshole I am. Look how loud I am!!! Hey everyone, look at me!!!" South Park had it dead on.

And how fat most of them are.

And old...

Around here, all the Harleys are driven by white-haired fat guys. What's up with that?

So, who wants to research how much US whiskey is sold in der Deutschland? Germany tariffs whiskey big time, GIs get a sideline - buy it at the PX and sell it out of the back of their cars...Maybe sell their Harley's before rotating back, as well.

" Total insanity and greed"

No, it's not, it's called pumping TRILLIONS into the economy...cheapening the currency...the AVALANCHE of money chases goods...drives up the prices...econ 101 I believe.

(The FED's) Bernanke's stated Mission in 2009:

1. Re-inflate Housing.

2. Re-inflate Stocks.

3. Recapitalize the banks.

Mission the expense of 90% of average Americans...

I love all brands, but you have to admit Harley did a amazing job marketing to white collar boomers...Harley successfully sold the idea that "If you're not riding a Harley, then you're not 'somebody'"...

Exactly what all of those "successful" psychopaths want to be is "somebody"..."Look at me"...Harley perfectly capitalized on their narcissism.

I buy and sell bikes all the time..I own a Harley, but I don't dress up "like a biker"...cracks me up to see wimpy, white boy, lawyers wearing "dew-rags"...hilarious!
