Trump's Hit List? Mapping The Top Export From Every Country

In a global market with (mostly, so-called) free trade, it’s common to see economies that are very specialized, each producing specific goods based on the competitive advantages, incentives, and resources they have available.

As VisualCapitalist's Jeff Desjardins explains, whether those inputs are inexpensive labor, ample amounts of natural resources, or a surplus in engineering talent, countries can use these advantages to manufacture and sell goods on the international market at a higher level of quality or a better price than competitors.

SIMPLIFYING WORLD TRADE

Today’s infographic comes to us from VoucherCloud, and it helps us get a sense of this specialization by looking at the top export of every country in the world. It’s a simple but telling way to see what countries are 'good' at producing... and therefore, what is the most-damaging tariff that Trump could apply on each nation...

Courtesy of: Visual Capitalist

To start, here is a breakdown of countries, based on top export category:

Note: Dataset is from the Observatory of Economic Complexity (2015)

At a high level, it’s clear that the vast majority of exports are derived from natural resources.

Fuels, metals, minerals, and organics make up over half of all top exports. Meanwhile, food and produce, which includes commodities like sugar, coffee, fish, and soybeans, also could be classified this way as well – and they make up a further 18.7% of top exports.

A DIVE INTO REGIONS

Viewing specific regions based on this concept can also provide some insight, as well.

It gives a sense of how developed the economies are in a certain area – and it also shows what resources are plentiful and in demand from those regions.

MIDDLE EAST

In case you weren’t aware, oil is a pretty big deal in the Middle East. There are a few exceptions: Israel’s top export is diamonds, Jordan’s is fertilizers, and Lebanon specializes in jewelry. The most recent data for war-torn Syria shows spice seeds at the top export.

EUROPE

Meanwhile, Europe is home to many developed economies that are focused on value-added goods, with many being in the transportation sector. Cars are a top export for nine countries here, and vehicle parts are a top export for other places, like Poland or Romania, as well.

Interestingly, France stands out here with its top exports being aerospace-related.

ASIA

Looking at Asia also provides some interesting contrasts.

South Korea specializes in integrated circuits, while their northern neighbors sell coal briquettes (mostly to China) as a top export. It may also be surprising to see economies like Thailand and Vietnam having top exports such as computers and broadcasting equipment.

At the same time, who knew that Nepal had such a bustling flavored water industry?

Shameless thread jack on my part but I've been on vacation.

Has this been reported on?

“Rudy (Edit:This is Judge Rudolph Contreras Strzok & Page are texting about.) is on the [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court]!” Page excitedly texted Strzok on July 25, 2016. “Did you know that? Just appointed two months ago.”

“I did,” Strzok responded. “I need to get together with him.”

“[He] said he’d gotten on a month or two ago at a graduation party we were both at.”

Contreras was appointed to the top surveillance court on May 19, 2016, federal records show.

“[REDACTED] (Edit: Who is redacted. Who, McCabe, Preistap etc?) suggested a social setting with others would probably be better than a one on one meeting,” Strzok told Page. “I’m sorry, I’m just going to have to invite you to that cocktail party.”

“Have to come up with some other work people cover for action,” Strzok added.

“Why more?” Page responded. “Six is a perfectly fine dinner party.”

I definitely feel sorry for the USA—which, after inventing things like the PC and smartphones through decades of research, a lot of which was backed by taxpayer money—got very few of the benefits of widespread, middle-class-boosting employment from these inventions.

Nor did the USA get the reward of greater budgetary solvency from more tax revenue, including for the Social Security trust fund, which was deprived of over 2 million contributors right before the gigantic Baby Boom retirement, when American companies set up shop to build computers with an ultra-cheap, non-racially-diverse group of workers in Asia.

There are a thousand PhD doctorate thesis's waiting to be written about how the use of the PC within our society resulted not in the advancement in any way of the middle class as the price plummeted but rather in the worst concentration of wealth our country has ever seen. If we had free and open trade with true competition and a level playing field, the exact opposite would have happened. Today more and more people have an iphone as their only computer and the lens it provides to the world and internet is about as jaded as one can get. Another telling that I find interesting is what computer companies "bring forth" from the internet at large to be "presented" to the user. I've noticed that if you're looking for something technical on Google it's practically worthless. The first lines are marked "ad" and the next 20 lines are the same but without the "ad" moniker. The reason Amazon is so huge and will continue to grow until the government intervenes is because they concentrate on goods and services the end user wants and save most of the political propaganda for somewhere else. Retail is a cruel world and you have to provide the goods at a reasonable price. Social media now is nothing more than a browser interface with algorithms designed to subtly let you know what you want to believe. They have really reached with point where their political agenda eclipses my desire to see my neighbors new cat picture and the result was deletion of their  software. I mean really, what's the point of any social interaction if you're constantly "watched, herded, cataloged and listed for some later use.

I am sure you mean well with your warnings, and it is gratifying to see someone devote so much energy to a perceived public service. Your postings do take up a lot of space, however, and it might be more effective to communicate these concerns directly with the webmasters.

Not anti or pro trump, dont care, see too many things he is just going along with status quo tho...But I had a thought. Maybe during the "reset" the reptilians running things do not want the U.S. venezuela'd..Think about it, the U.S. is still needed in many ways..So, change things around a bit, so that, altho the "rese"t will cause much damage, it wont be set back to the stone age. get out of certain trade treaties etc. Or, is trump a nice guy and doing this to keep the pain less than it will be..I dont know, but interesting theories that came to mind. In either case, most of the people I have learned to trust are all thinking a "reset" is coming soon...we shall see. the golden rule, those with the gold makes the rules.

maybe its economics...maybe its because nobody wants automobiles made in the USA...I find that japanese engines are good...Honda engines, altho a bit more expensive, last forever..Whether it is a generator, or a motorcycle or a water pump, I will pay more for Honda, because I know they last.  Or, you can buy chinese, and recognize that is a use for a few years then throw it away..Even german cars suck now...Since I have not bought honda/japanese lately, because my hondas dont break down, maybe even japanese stuff is getting worse also..Dont know.

The tariffs are not affecting the trade between non-US countries.

They are already preparing to make changes to sidestep the US. It will not be immediately visible, but people now understand that trading with a country which can affect the livelihoods of many at the drop of a hat with executive orders is not wise. Two years minimum are required to change trade paths.

It all goes back to Ricardo.

Ricardo made the arguments for the Repeal of the Corn Laws and the case for free trade through comparative advantage.

We have one, but not the other.

He has the three groups within the capitalist economy.

The two productive groups, the capitalists and the labourers and the parasitic group, the landlords (rentiers).

When the architects of globalisation were reading up on Ricardo’s law of comparative advantage they must have missed it.

You need a low cost of living for free trade.

Why did the jobs go to Mexico after NAFTA?

The cost of living = housing costs + healthcare costs + student loan costs + food + other costs of living

The cost of living is too high in the US, and this has to be covered in wages reducing profit.

The US economy is not geared for a free trade world.

“Income inequality is not killing capitalism in the United States, but rent-seekers like the banking and the health-care sectors just might” Angus Deaton, Nobel Prize Winner
