Americans Now Own 40% Of The World's One Billion Guns

At the end of 2017, there were approximately 1 billion firearms in over 230 countries around the globe, 84.6 percent of which were held by civilians, 13.1 percent by state militaries, and 2.2 percent by law enforcement agencies - with Americans the dominant owners, according to a study released Monday.

Of the 857 million guns owned by civilians, the Small Arms Survey says 393.3 million are held in the United States, which is “more than those held by civilians in the other top 25 countries combined.”

To clarify - there are more civilian-owned guns in the US than there are people.

And while headlines have proclaimed a slowdown in gunmaker revenues, as @StephenGutkowski noted, the numbers are still astounding - In May alone, American civilians bought somewhere around 2 million firearms.

Table 1: Estimated total civilian-held legal and illicit firearms in the 25 top-ranked countries and territories, 2017

“The key to the United States, of course, is its unique gun culture,” the report’s author, Aaron Karp, said at a news conference.

“Ordinary American people buy approximately 14 million new and imported guns every year,” Karp told a news conference at UN headquarters in New York City.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution preserves the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This enables Americans to have access to powerful and cheap firearms that are not commercially available in other regions around the world due to strict laws.

“Why are they buying them? That’s another debate. Above all, they are buying them probably because they can. The American market is extraordinarily permissive,” he said.

The estimated rate of gun ownership around the world significantly varies, with 120.5 firearms for every 100 residents in the United States. Second on the list is Yemen, with 52.8 firearms per 100 residents, 39.1 in Montenegro, and 34.7 in Canada.

Table 2: An estimated rate of civilian firearms holdings in the 25 top-ranked countries and territories, 2017 (firearms per 100 residents)

The report mentioned out of the 1 billion firearms worldwide, 133 million weapons were held by government military forces and 22.7 million by police agencies.

Karp said the new estimate of global firearms is significantly higher than the 875 million weapons determined in the 2007 survey, with 650 million civilian-held guns at that time.

After the American-led interventions in the Middle East and the 2008 financial crisis, citizens of the world have been rushing to stockpile guns. This alarming trend was significantly noted in the United States as civilian gun ownership soared from 2007 to 2017.

However, the U.S. is fifth today in military firearms holdings, behind Russia, China, North Korea and Ukraine. The report also indicates it is fifth in law enforcement holdings, behind Russia, China, India, and Egypt.

Small Arms Survey director Eric Berman emphasized that the Geneva-based research and policy institute is not an advocacy organization, but would rather educate governments about the global distribution of civilian firearms.

“We don’t advocate disarmament. We are not against guns,” he said. “What we want to do, and what we have done successfully for the last 19 years, is to be able to provide authoritative information and analysis for governments so that they can work to address illicit proliferation and reduce it — and to reduce also the incidents of armed violence.”

Anna Alvazzi del Frate, the institute’s program director, said that “the countries with the highest level of firearm violence — they don’t rank high in terms of ownership per person.”

“So what we see is that there is no direct correlation at the global level between firearm ownership and violence,” she said.

But “the correlation exists with firearm suicides, and it is so strong that it can be used, at least in Western countries, as a proxy for measurement,” Alvazzi del Frate said.

While it is evident that global civilian arms holdings have rapidly expanded post-2008, it seems as the majority of the increase came from the United States.

Funny in Europe countries like Germany and Austria that produce great firearms (Walther, H&K, Steyr Arms), the denizens of those countries are forbidden from using them to protect and defend themselves. A license to carry a concealed firearm in Germany is nigh on impossible for an ordinary citizen to get, in some European countries pistols are banned (UK & Ireland).

The only firearm friendly nation I am aware of in Europe in Czech Republic, but I'm open to being corrected on that. I know many Europeans from several different nations and not a single one of them owns a firearm, nor would even know how to proceed about getting one, yet the country they live in makes beautiful weapons, and the fortunate people in the US of A get to enjoy them, and use them to defend themselves. There is something fundamentally fucked up about this world.

None of these gun chick pics have big enough breasts to make me want to open my mouth about them! But for some strange reason (usually a high quality beer) I do. (I work nights:)

edit: Although after scrolling back up the page, hers would be acceptable. You see, I'm old and am used to old women with humongous fat breasts ...and I like them to sag a little, so you can weight and measure them in your hand with the ultimate test of mouth feel. If only miffed, ms and no knew how much I would appreciate them. They'd probably deny:)

I look at that picture and think:

Has ZH gone Drudge with its endless mind control images? Has ZH hired some jew editor that wants to push jewish style pornography on the alt-right?

Plus, she is wearing a MAGA hat.  That this tattoo'd slut is MAGA is a typical jewish style joke.  They make entire movies and TV series based only on this theme.  Kick the piss out of goyim, and if you make them laugh while you denigrate them then the joke is even funnier.

HELLO SPAM-LOVERS!!!   BIG UP from the SPAMMER BUNKHOUSE here in the Methfilled Valley Trailer Park in Methfilled Valley, PA.  Good to see my men powow, Leakanthrophy and Wadalt and  PrivetHedge  and our newbies  MoreSun (a real bacon-loving attack dog!) and CHEOLL and sanctificado  and  gzcekkyret  out from under the couch sucking their own dicks at 3 a.m. and back on the threads SPAMMING like a Grease Fire in the middle of the night!!!!

Welcome newbie MoreSun talking some heavy attack shit at 3am!    DARWIN, our Master Spammer is whacked!!!

THIS is an important week here in the SPAMMER's BUNKHOUSE (the leaking moldy single-wide in the trailer park).  This week I (we?) are celebrating SEVEN YEARS AND TWO WEEKS here on ZH, obsessively SPAMMING every thread we can with off-topic comments.  You see, there are dozens of "personalities" living in this one single sad SPAMMER's sick little mind, which he calls "Spammer's Bunkhouse."  How sick is that?

Each of "us" (these innumerable fake log-on's) is represented by an ACTION FIGURE that Master Spammer ("DARWIN" is his name -- can you believe that?)  lines up on his kitchen counter and TALKS TO!!  WHACK JOB!!!

SAD BUT TRUE!!  I (we?) have wasted my (our) youth (or at least the last seven years) with at least one hand in my pants and the other hand SPAMMING ZH.  Yes, indeed.  DOZENS and DOZENS (maybe hundreds) of log-on's banned --

>>  All the porn at Celebrity-leaks: that's me.
>>  Daily Westerner: that's me.
>>  "In the news....SPAMMER broomsticked by furious readers" -- registered in Nigeria) :: that's me TOO!!

That's our life (all of us living in Master Spammer's Mind): mopping the floor at the Porn Cinema at 2am, working the French Frier at SONIC (demoted from the drive-thru window 'cuz my ZIT-covered face scared the customers), sucking cock on the Internet, and spamming ZH with an enormous Excel spreadsheet of the log-on's of dozens of "digital friends" who upvote one another and virtually suck my little micro penis..

MEET my current imaginary friends.  We all live in one SPAMMER's HEAD (and as ACTION FIGURES on his kitchen counter) but as for me, I have gone off the reservation.  These other "personalities" are pretty troubled.

lol  I've been here too long.

ZH used to be 99% pretty hard financial info, and thus a lot of traders and brokers.  It was never a 'right' site, although it definitely slants conservative/libertarian due to that audience, thus played to that crowd for elections.  It's only recently that, much like everywhere else, it's like the campaign season never fucking ended.

Also, you think these pictures are explicit?  Good lord, what happened to ZH?  My favorite avatars were from a period where everyone was using pics from *actual pornography.*  Like not only NSFW, these weren't safe for anywhere.  But again--traders and brokers, so mostly 25-45 y/o men that worked unreasonable hours, so... Yeah, made sense.

I miss that ZH.  (Although I feel like that was almost a decade ago now...)

"ZH used to be 99% pretty hard financial info"

I hate it when people write that. No, it was not anywhere near that.  It was a snarky and un-PC commentary on all the corruption of the 2007/8 crash.  There were lots of articles about things like the occupy movement and Obama elections.  ZH had a smaller group of regular commentors, and most of them recognized each other.  Many also moved over from Mish's blog after Mish started blocking commentors and playing games.

In 2007, far fewer commentors were red-pilled.  Most knew something was gravely wrong and were looking for sources of honest information.  ZH was one of very few of these places.  As a career IT specialist I remember lots more technical discussion about IT issues back then.

In my case, I have gone through several incarnations as different ZH users got blocked for unknown reasons, mostly just for too much snark.  My commentary has evolved over the decade, and so has ZH's.  ZH certainly has grown and many of the older commentors have disappeared, perhaps simply because they thought it would help maintain anonymity.  Perhaps they could not tolerate the free speech and fight club atmosphere, so they drifted off.  Perhaps they were jews and intolerant of criticism.  Or as in my case, perhaps they were blocked and changed their skin.

While the story is about guns, and the chick is just click bait, I feel a need to respond by saying an A-cup or small B is elegant, svelte, healthy, and looks great in clothes.  My fondness for large breasts comes from limited interruptions to sleep from more filling nursing sessions for the babies.  I've looked at breasts from both sides now.

Very odd....although given how vigorously the disarmament forces have been at work there, it stands to reason I suppose. In any case, I take these survey numbers with a grain of skeptical salt. I know more than one person from eastern europe, and they all say that you can practically find Kalashnikovs laying in the bushes, there are so many of them. The people there just don't admit to owning anything, as they are all too familiar with what happens when far left governments assume power and start taking interest in these kind of 'surveys'.

what concerns me most of all is gov.orgs have 23M in law enforment hands  and paramilitaries with 155M.

the other 850M plus is awesome. goal is a billion. are you doing your part? Give a gun to someone and go buy another. smartest thing these rich fuks could do to spread freedom-donate a gun to a freedom loving human.  train them safe handling-NRA subsidized guns for low income freedom lovers.  sponsor a bill for free guns. like the free phone shitshow. disarming gov.org should be the goal

he who hesitates pushes up daisies

Not an issue, Try it! Besides guns are expensive. You can't just go out and get a gun as a heroin addicted ass. You have to pay, give or owe way more than you have. Illegal guns are a big issue. Legal guns are not!

We all go through the telephone bullshit check after buying every gun. This entire system is messed up. This is the computer age. Why do I need my gun dealer to make a phone call to a .gov inefficient agency to say OK sell him a gun every time I buy one? ...and people say there are not enough checks!

The problem is, that if I am a crook I can buy one with no background check for a few hundred more, sometimes less and it's not traceable! I could do that! But I don't! WTF is wrong with this?.....sorry worked a long weekend and had some beers and am babbling....not that I don't usually:)

A Gun becomes an illegal gun when a criminal uses it to commit a crime. If a firearm is not being used in a crime it is nobody's business who owns the firearm. Voter fraud is much more rampant than guns being used in a crime but Leftists want nothing done about it, because they use it to their advantage. Poll taxes are illegal because voting is a constitutionally protected right, so should taxes on firearms be illegal because they too are a Constitutionally protected right.

Safe handling and marksmanship should be taught to all school children and each child receives a free gun on successfully completing the course.

These courses should be substituted for sex education.   Sex education is an unnecessary waste of time - we all figured it out by ourselves - but proper use and maintenance of guns does benefit from instruction,   :)))

the Swiss and Israeli governments want *all* of their citizens trained and armed.  the US used to have this attitude, selling surplus military firearms to civilians at a discount and providing training.

but at some point the US gov decided, wait they could use those guns against us, like we did with the British; we should work on limiting them.  LOL.  good luck with that.

The gun:person ratio in my small, rural vicinity is about 5:1.  it was probably 10:1 before the neighbors with a walk-in gun safe moved away. Now, only three out of four of us have gun safes.  The exception being the family which only has a BB gun.

1) click bait: I wasn't dissapointed but the photshop'd MAGA hat sucked.

2) yay for the US ratio, and good luck banning knives, UK.  Aussie's, you screwed up.

FWIW, I gave my ex a MINT Colt Detective .38 Special so I could keep the S&W .357 .  concealable vs firepower?  you know my choice.

Lithuania might be a pattern for many countries:

1. Go to your doctor and get a paper saying you are stable mentally. Many doctors won't produce these.

2. Take a class in your native language. Pass a test in the native language. Helps to exclude foreigners.

3. Go to a supervised range and show you are competent.  Hard to find such a thing.

4. Take all of the above to your police station and apply.  In many cases they require to show need. Hunting is not an acceptable reason in many built up areas.

5. If, by the grace of good and your ability to grease certain palms, you get a permit you are only allowed 1 pistol and a couple long guns.

Suppressors are widely accepted with a permit.  Hollow point ammunition is forbidden. Permits are required to purchase ammunition and all firearm accessories like rifle scopes, etc.

Of course jihadists are bringing in weapons by the car loads from the Balkans and through the southern ports.

And they don't have permits.  "We don't need no stinking badges or permits"
