DR. MCCULLOUGH RELEASES STUDY LINKING VACCINES TO SPREAD OF TICK-BORNE ILLNESSES
Recently, Dr. Peter McCullough, joined by his colleagues from The Wellness Company, released a ground-breaking new study that raises concerns about the possibility that vaccines are linked to the sky-rocketing rates of alpha-gal syndrome – a tick-borne illness that can trigger a life-threatening allergy to red meat.
Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is an allergy to a carbohydrate expressed by non-primate mammals known as alpha-gal. Tick bites are the best-supported and most extensively studied cause of this allergy. Besides food sources, alpha-gal is also present in beef and pig-derived gelatin that are used in several human vaccines and in residual materials introduced during vaccine manufacture.
With suspected cases of AGS rising roughly 100-fold over the past decade and alpha-gal now detected in 24% of adults in high-burden US states, the immunologic consequences of vaccine exposure warrant further investigation.
“Gelatin-containing vaccines represent a near-universal source of parenteral alpha-gal-bearing material and may contribute to alpha-gal syndrome through two non-exclusive pathways: direct sensitization or immune priming followed by tick-bite boosting,” said Dr. McCullough. “Their ability to elicit reactions in alpha-gal-sensitized patients is established and warrants caution in individuals with known AGS.”
There are two proposed pathways by which vaccines containing alpha-gal material may contribute to AGS. The simplest hypothesis is that vaccine gelatin contributes to alpha-gal sensitization directly, without requiring a tick bite.
The more conservative hypothesis is that parenteral gelatin exposure from vaccines containing alpha-gal material functions as an immunologic prime and a subsequent tick bite as the boost. Gelatin-containing vaccination in a susceptible host expands or redirects the alpha-gal-specific memory pool. A later tick bite delivers alpha-gal on a salivary glycoprotein carrier with potent intrinsic adjuvant activity, producing a rapid, affinity-matured, class-switched recall response of the magnitude required for clinical AGS. Neither exposure alone need be sufficient in most individuals.
It is suspected that over 450,000 Americans are living with AGS. AGS can cause severe and even-life threatening reactions. People with AGS might not react to every product containing alpha-gal, and some people can experience different symptoms or reactions each time they are exposed to alpha-gal, even when it is the same product.
Symptoms usually appear 2–6 hours after eating red meat, dairy products, or after exposure to products containing alpha-gal (for example, gelatin-coated medications).
How to Avoid a Tick Bite
With tick bites being the most likely trigger for AGS, Dr. McCullough lays out five ways to avoid exposure:
- Wear protective clothes: light colored clothes, long sleeves, long pants, and pants tucked into socks.
- Check your body after being outdoors and check it early
- Shower and heat dry: shower within two hours of being outside and heat dry clothes on high heat for at least 10 minutes to kill ticks.
- Use a safe and effective deet-free tick repellent.
- Reduce tick habitats around your home: keep grass short, remove leaf litter, and use a wood-chip barrier.
