The Bureau of Economic Analysis is quietly reworking how it calculates price increases, in a move expected to lower recent PCE readings. Not lower prices. Lower readings. Headline PCE hit a three-year high of 4.1% in May. Core hit 3.4%. Both sit well above the Fed's sacred 2% target, and neither is coming down on its own. So the measuring stick gets trimmed instead (a former Fed inflation researcher has already conceded the new math should make it easier for them to avoid hiking).
