Tether Adds 14 Tonnes of Gold in Q2 as Bullion Holdings Reach $18.8 Billion

Authored by GoldFix

GFN – LONDON: Stablecoin issuer Tether increased its physical gold holdings by 14 metric tonnes during the second quarter of 2026, lifting its total bullion reserves to more than 146 tonnes valued at approximately $18.8 billion, according to the company’s latest quarterly reserve attestation. The purchase reinforces gold’s growing role within the company’s reserve portfolio alongside its substantial holdings of U.S. Treasuries and Bitcoin.

While U.S. Treasury securities remain Tether’s largest reserve asset at approximately $115 billion, the company has steadily expanded its allocation to physical gold. The latest purchase lifted its bullion holdings above 146 tonnes, making Tether one of the world’s largest private-sector holders of physical gold outside central banks and major exchange-traded funds.

The company also reduced its secured lending exposure by approximately $2.38 billion during the quarter while USDT circulation increased to roughly $184.6 billion, reflecting continued demand for the dollar-backed stablecoin.

Ardoino has previously said the company intends to maintain a meaningful allocation to bullion as part of its reserve strategy.

“For our own portfolio, it’s reasonable that we are going to have around 10% in bitcoin and 10% to 15% in gold.”

The continued accumulation comes as central bank demand for bullion remains historically strong, highlighting gold’s expanding role not only in sovereign reserves but also on the balance sheets of large private financial institutions.
