Breaking: Netherlands Moves 86 Tonnes of Gold Out of America for “Tradability” Reasons

GFN – AMSTERDAM: The Dutch central bank has moved about 86 tonnes of gold from reserves previously held in the United States and Canada to London, citing rising geopolitical tensions and a desire to improve access to its bullion during a severe crisis.

De Nederlandsche Bank said the transfer took place between March and August as part of a broader effort to strengthen crisis preparedness. The bank said London offers greater liquidity because gold held at the Bank of England meets international trading standards and can be mobilized more quickly than bullion stored in New York or Ottawa.

“In view of increasing geopolitical unrest, DNB is strengthening its crisis preparedness.”

The Netherlands holds a total of 612.4 tonnes of gold, valued at €72.2 billion at the end of 2025. Following the restructuring, London now holds 32.1% of Dutch reserves, up from 18.1%, while New York and Ottawa each hold 18.5%. Another 30.8% remains in the Netherlands.

The operation did not consist entirely of physically shipping bullion across the Atlantic. DNB said approximately 59 tonnes were effectively relocated by selling gold in New York and purchasing an equivalent amount in London. More than 27 tonnes were physically transported from North America to the bank’s facility in Zeist, while a similar amount of internationally tradable gold was moved from Zeist to London.

DNB Governor Olaf Sleijpen said the objective was to make the reserves more readily deployable if financial conditions deteriorate sharply.

“With this relocation, we have improved the tradability of our gold reserves.”
